Polk Audio

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Polk Audio PSW110

by Loren Barstow

Enjoy rich, accurate bass with the PSW110 from Polk. Its 10" woofer and 100-watt high-current amplifier work together to produce powerful lows with your movies and music. And this subwoofer sports a new, more powerful driver design to deliver deeper, louder, and punchier bass than previous Polk subs. Special circuitry inside the amp and a solid MDF cabinet with internal bracings ensure clean, detailed lows, even when you crank up the volume.

    Features

Driver: The Polk Audio PSW110 uses a 10" Dynamic Balance composite cone driver for deep, accurate response with low distortion. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer utilizes a rubber surround.

Klippel Optimized Woofer: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk is able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance even at extreme listening levels.

Motor Structure: The PSW110 utilizes a powerful motor structure for a higher BL responses (the measure of the motive force applied to the cone) that results in louder, deeper and punchier bass.

Compression Circuitry: The woofer's Compression Circuitry limits distortion at high volume levels.

Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current amplifier producing 100 watts RMS/200 watts dynamic power that supplies clean power for loud bass and a wide dynamic range necessary to recreate a life-like experience in your home.

Enclosure: The PSW110 features a bass-reflex enclosure with non-resonant MDF construction and internal bracing for deep bass impact with superior detail and accuracy. The Polk Audio PSW110 is available in a Black or Cherry finish.

Down-Firing Port: The powered subwoofer's downward firing port allows the woofer to be extremely efficient and provides more bass impact for your home theater experience.

Not Video Shielded: The subwoofer is not magnetically shielded, so it is not recommended to place it next to tube TVs and video monitors. Though LCD, DLP and Plasma televisions are not affected by magnetism you should allow at least 18" of space between the subwoofer and any TV.

Placement: You may place the subwoofer anywhere in your room, but it will perform best when it's on the same side of the room as your system's front speakers. Also, placing the subwoofer near a wall or in a corner will increase its loudness.

    Controls

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select Auto, which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off 15 minutes after the signal stops; On, which keeps the unit on and Standby, which turns the unit off. The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on and red when the unit is off.

Volume Control: The PSW110 has a rotary volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to select 0-degrees (normal) or 180-degrees (reverse). If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass attack.

Low-Pass Filter: The PSW110 offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-160 Hz. There is an LFE position for use with the filtered LFE output from a receiver or preamp.

    Connections

Line Inputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA line level inputs for use with receivers having subwoofer or stereo preamp outputs that do not contain their own low-pass crossover. Using the Line Inputs allows PSW110 to do all the low-pass filtering. If your receiver or processor only has a single subwoofer line output, connect it to the Right line input jack.

LFE In: The right channel RCA input doubles as the LFE input; if your receiver has an LFE output and a built-in crossover, use this input and set the low-pass filter dial to LFE.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has spring clips for the speaker level inputs and outputs. The subwoofer's low-pass filter sends bass frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) to the subwoofer. The speaker level inputs and outputs are shorted together, so the output is not crossed over. You should set you receiver's front speaker setting to Large.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must say I was quite surprised when my subwoofer arrived. It was larger than expected, more beautiful than I could have imagined and the sound quality is perfect. Nice smooth, "REAL BASS" sound. The cabinet quality is very nice.
    Pros:
    Perfect for my needs

    Horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By D.G., California on Friday, November 09, 2012

Polk should be ashamed of himself to want so much for this weak sub. Replaced it with a Paradigm PDR-8 for the same price and it blew the Polk out of the room. The Polk PSW10 sounds better and is also cheaper!
    Pros:
    Built like a tank.
    Cons:
Its the weakest 100 watt sub i've ever heard!!!!

Great for those war and sci-fi movies with all those booms

Lets you hear the really low frequency sound without over loading your left and right speakers. The surround sound amplifiers also do not have quite enough power to get all the very low frequencies. Using the sub-woofer with polkaudio RTiA5's with an 80 Hz crossover.
    Pros:
Does the job! Nice looking and not to large. Like the solid cover that protects the speaker and auto sense or program material.

Quite impressive versus old pioneer 6 in sub woofer i had. I'm glad i didn't buy the 12 inch sub my room is not big enough for that much bass. This sub does wonderful for classic rock and roll. Would recommend to anyone needing that extra "KICK" in their music system.
    Pros:
Wonderful sound and auto on and off.

    Awesome bass

Written By Jon, Westminster, Maryland on Thursday, April 19, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have never owened a sub woofer before, so for my first one, it is awesome. I never new such low frequencies exsisted. I highly recommend this sub woofer to anyone. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I had just purchased a set of Polk Audio RTi A3's (which sound fantastic themselves) in the cherry finish and when purchasing the sub I chose the cherry finish as well thinking they would match, to my surprise they look nothing alike.
    Pros:
    Awesome bass.
    Cons:
Finish does not match other Polk Audio speakers.

Gool looks, good sound, good price

Written By berndcrew, Ventura CA on Thursday, March 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like classic rock & roll and have a old style two channel Yamaha stereo amp and reccent JBL speakers. I've been trying to re-create the old 1970s sound when speakers used to have 12in woofers (which are hard to find in speakers today). This subwoofer fills the role just fine. It takes a while to get it balanced but it meets my expectations. Nice looking cabinet as well to keep the wife happy.
    Pros:
looks, works & sounds great at a fair price
    Cons:
owners manual shows how to hook up to home theater with three different outputs, but nothing on connecting to a simple two channel stero.

Just got this sub tonight and am sending it back tomorrow. Hooked it up to my B&W soundbar and almost no sound coming out, even with everything turned all the way up. Very disappointing. I know 100 watts is not a lot, but my old 8" Sonys put out much more bass with less power.

    Excellent for all users

Written By VetteCityMan, Bowling Green, KY on Friday, December 23, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am using this sub with my computer system in my home office. First, I have a Dell XPS with all the bells and whistles. I am using a coax cable to carry the 7.1 sound to a Sony STRDH700 receiver. My room in 15X15. I got tired of computer speakers & wanted more. With Polk Audio, I got much more. I am using the Polk RM85 speaker set, utilizing the 5.1 sound. This setup needed more base, so I decided to add a sub to the system. I decided on the PSW110 because I preferred a 10" woofer and the 100/200 watt rating seemed right....boy was I right. The RM85 is a beautiful sounding system but was lacking the bottom end. The PSW110 added the base I needed easily. I am suing about 2/3 of the volume & the system is full and rich. What I like best about the sub is the natural full sound & its accurate reproduction of the base sounds. Drums & guitars seem to move naturally between the speakers & the sub & there is nothing missing. There is no fake fullness or humming or rattling, instead, the sound is clear & spreads throughout the range with pin-point clarity. The room is full & alive with music while being pleasant to the ear...many times I work for 4 to 6 hours straight & never get tired of the sound. As an added plus, you cannot hear the source, the base is even throughout the room & blends with the 5.1 perfectly. I could not ask for more...it's clear, natural, comfortable, full, & accurate. A great sub that out-performs many others costing much more.
    Pros:
This is a fantastic sub, even greater when you consider the price!
    Cons:
    Uh......nothing

    At Last, Full Sound

Written By acmiller, Northampton MA on Sunday, October 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I listen mostly to acoustic music -- acoustic jazz, folk, newgrass. But with living space that overflows with windows and wood floors, even this type of music loses its low end (despite better-than-good Paradigm floor & shelf speakers). I love the handsome Polk Audio PSW110 because it has returned the third dimension to my sound system. The size of this sub is just right and its capacity to create sonic contours without overpowering my experience is just what I hoped for. A great buy.

    Junk.

Worked for a while, now there is no sound. Sub makes a loud scratching noise when just touching the volume control without any input cable connected. Luckily, I am within 60 day return period...

Works great for broadening home audio

Written By Andy v, San Jose, CA on Wednesday, February 09, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having a very good experience with this subwoofer. I've seen complaints that
this doesn't deliver enough bass, but I'm having trouble seeing how that could
    possibly be.

With the gain turned up less than halfway, I get deep bass frequencies
throughout the living room that adds real dimension to movies, and realistic
    definition to music.

Ghettofabulous? No. Perfectly balanced for rational, normal listening? Yes.

Highly recommended, unless, of course, you're trying to impress your neighbors
or be the biggest gangsta on the block.
