Sound Ordnance

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Sound Ordnance™ M-1350

by Buck Pomerantz

Win the battle for great sound in your ride. Sound Ordnance amplifiers feature tough construction, rugged looks, and a 3-year warranty, so you can enjoy the full power of your music for the long haul. Even better, you can add Sound Ordnance to your arsenal at a surprisingly affordable price.

The Sound Ordnance M-1350 mono subwoofer amplifier packs a 350-watt wallop that'll give your subwoofers some serious firepower. An adjustable low-pass filter and a variable bass boost allow you to control your bass barrage at will.

The M-1350 amplifier uses sophisticated power supply and output technologies to ensure clean amplification from the input all the way to your speakers. Special circuits protect the amp from overheating and short circuits, and a turn-on delay virtually eliminates that annoying thump when you turn your system on.

Power Ratings: The Sound Ordnance M-1350 is a mono-block Class AB amplifier with an RMS power rating of 210 watts per channel into 4 ohms, and 350 watts per channel into 2 ohms.Power ratings are measured with an input power of 14.4 volts.

Crossovers: The M-1350 is equipped with a low-pass crossover and a subsonic filter. You can set the low-pass cutoff frequency between 40Hz and 300Hz. The subsonic filter, designed to block ultra low frequencies that can damage speakers and rob amplifier power, is variable between 10Hz and 40Hz. The crossovers have a 12dB per octave slope, and cannot be turned off.

Bass Boost: The amplifier has a rotary bass boost control, which is continuously variable from 0dB to +12dB at 45 Hz.

LED Indicators: The M-1350 features two LED indicators: a green LED that illuminates when the amp is powered on, and a red LED that illuminates when the amplifier is in protect mode due to overheating or a short circuit in the speaker wire.

Remote Bass Control: The amplifier comes with a remote bass control module to allow you to adjust the volume of the amp from the front of the vehicle. The module has a rotary volume control knob, and an LED to indicate when the amplifier is turned on. The module is designed to mount under the dash, and comes with 16-1/2 feet of cable.

Connections

Removable End Caps: The end caps on the M-1350 are removable with a 3mm Allen wrench (not supplied) to make it easier to attach the power and speaker wires.

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. (An 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended.) The remote turn-on terminal is a set screw terminal that will also accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

Speaker Connections: The speaker connections are set screw terminals that will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. Even though this is a mono amplifier, there are two sets of speaker outputs. The terminals are wired in parallel internally, allowing you to connect two 4-ohm speakers to separate terminals. A Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals.

RCA Inputs and Outputs: The amplifier features a pair of stereo RCA inputs for connecting your head unit. There is also a pair of stereo RCA outputs for feeding the preamp signal to another amplifier, if needed.

Fuses: The M-1350 features two 25-amp ATC blade fuses.

So far so great...

Written By Persianchemist, Merced, CA on Friday, June 14, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using this to power a kicker 10' at 4ohm. This was my first amp and sub combo plus I did the install myself. I have zero experience doing any of this stuff. For me this totally does the job. The amp was very easy to install and wire up. It has plenty of power for this sub. If you need an amp to power subs this is a great one.

Awesome

Written By Brandon K, Omaha, NE on Sunday, June 09, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome amp at an awesome value. Like people said below, the angled inputs for wires are a little annoying since the side covers make it hard to get to with a screwdriver, but it's completely manageable. I'm also not sure if it's common to put the cooling vents on the bottom of the amp, but I hope that doesn't become an issue. I did use some spacers between my sub and the amp so that it has some more room to cool just in case. Looks great and performs great so far. Love the remote gain control that comes with it too. Would highly recommend.
Pros:
Looks great. Great value - a lot of power for the money.
Cons:
Angled wiring inputs make for more difficult installation than necessary. Air vents are on bottom of amp.

Good for a cheap amp

Written By Anonymous, Oklahoma City on Friday, May 31, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for a cheap amp to drive a small entry level sub, this will get the job done. I just needed some sound in a car which isn't used often, so I paired this with an old RF HE2 10. Careful, it will get pretty hot. I have yet to shut it down, but it got very hot after an hour of play and I mounted the amp with 1/4" spacers to make sure the vents on the bottom were not obstructed. I tune amps using test tones and a multimeter, when tuning this amp it wouldnt get near target voltage which makes me think it wont produce a full 350 watts, but keep in mind the price of this amp. Also, the endcaps make it difficult to get to the connections, so if mounting in a tight space keep this in mind.

All in all, if you are just getting started, and might upgrade in the future this isn't a bad place to start.
Pros:
Good entry level amp with a good warranty sold by a solid company Sub Sonic filter - Rare on amps at this price point
Cons:
Heat True produced power Size Layout - Can be challanging to get to connections

Gets the job done cheap

Written By Brian, Escondido, CA on Tuesday, May 21, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm powering 2 10" Kickers 150 RMS each, with this amp and it does the job great. Only down side was having to take off the decorative chrome piece to install the wiring. It was very easy, just seemed like a poor design. I highly recommend this amp though if you're on a budget and don't need a ton of power.
Pros:
Cheap, plenty of power, brushed aluminum sides look nice, remote gain control
Cons:
Awkward wiring, and kind of big. There are vents on the bottom of the amp which seems like a bad idea, after mounting the amp the vents don't get any air. I've only had the amp for 2 weeks, so time will tell how important those vents are.

Seems great... For ten minutes.

Written By Javan, Wisconsin on Saturday, May 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me prefice this by saying that I am an engineering student, with a great degree of experience with circuits and audio systems, I have been doing this a LONG time.

I installed this amplifier with an Infinity 1252w, and tuned the amplifier to output about half the volume it was capable of. High quality, high gauge wires, and careful installation. After about an hour of driving, my bass dissappered, and upon driving home, noticed the protection LED was lit. I carefully removed the speaker wire and RCA inputs, one at a time at a time, shutting down for ten seconds and rebooting after each one, Still lit.

I then removed the amp, and hooked it up to my test system on my work bench. Hooking it up to a remote battery with high gauge wire, and running it to a Kicker L7, I found that the unit, without ANY music playing, became VERY hot, and then blew the fuses. Rechecked all the connections and then inserted new fuses, they blew immediately, with and without speaker attached.

Needless to say, I did my due diligence, and this particular unit was JUNK. Perhaps just a lemon, that remains to be seen when S/O returns my email. Hopefully they stand behind their product.
Pros:
CHEAP, Looks good
Cons:
Doesn't work

Sub Amp

Written By Warner, New Orleans on Tuesday, March 19, 2013

I decided to add a dedicated amp to power my sub whoofer aboard my boat. The staff at Crutchfield were extremely helpful with determining my sub's power handling capabilities and selecting a suitable amp.

The tech support team supplied installation instructions that made installing and connecting the amp a breeze.
Pros:
Great amp with an outstanding warranty and tech support.

Cons:
awkward wire input placement, its at an angle and i had to remove the fake chrome part to install.

Great Amp

Written By Billy, Massapequa Park, NY on Friday, February 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have this paired with my Polk Audio DXi 108 and the pair is just unbelievable. I was very surprised at the outcome but I would recommend that pair to anybody. And I like how the bass controller is included, I mounted it right next to my drivers seat on the center counsel and its perfect for adjustments when needed.
Pros:
Great power output. Bass controller included.
Cons:
none

m1350

Written By natep, carmel, IN on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would highly recommend this amp. You get lots of bang for the buck. I coupled this with 2 10' kicker subs(150w rms each). It powers both no problem. I found the gain control a bit confusing. There is no gain control on the actual amp itself. You must plug in the external gain control to control it. Not a big problem. I especially love the subsonic filter. I have it set at 25 hz. There is no point in giving 10' subs anything lower. I am still wondering if the bass boost is set for a certain frequency, or just the whole spectrum. Most amps are set at 45 hz. Mounting it to your box is easy. mark holes and drill 1/16 holes and boom. youre done. As far as distortion goes, i havent found any so far. I have my bass boost set at 6db and yet, none. Good job sound ordnance!

SO M-1350

Written By Anonymous, Ketchikan, AK on Sunday, January 06, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is worth all that you pay and more. I'm used to having amps of more known brand names but bought this for my sons ford ranger for his first system. It's being used to push one JL Audio 10w6 in a small sealed enclosure. Though it won't be breaking windshields or shake the ground, it gets plenty loud and sounds very good. Considering I only paid a hundred bucks I think it was worth it instead of buying a used amp of higher quality ad still probably pay 2-3 times more.
Pros:
Low cost Sounds good
Cons:
The way the wires mount are awkward because its angled but once it's on it's all good. The mounting points. You need to have a long Philips bit if using a drill. The end caps look and feel cheap. They're made of plastic and covered with fake chrome. But all the cons are mostly cosmetic and don't hurt performance. I still would recommend this amp.

Great Value!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp has some great features...great price for the wattage you get and among what others say I enjoyed the slanted inputs for the speakers and the battery/ground/remote, to make it easier I just took the side plate off to access the screws easier..not that hard. Great value! Powers my 10" JL woofer just fine and no real issues I can tell so far.
Pros:
Excellent Value for the Power
Cons:
None so far.

don't hesitate

Written By Riskbreaker0, Catonsville, MD on Tuesday, November 27, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first amp was a mono D-class amp from MTX, amazing. It also cost me $500 for an amp that only put out 1500watts max. Just bought two of these M1350, I'm totally sold on sound ordnance. I now own their m4050 amp, for the four kicker 6.5" speakers in my firebird, and the two m1350 for my two 12" kicker compVRs. I was running the m1500 on two kicker comps, loud, but not loud enough. The old combo I had, before it was stolen, was the mtx 1500D, and a 12" L7 solo baric. The two compVR's put that solo baric to shame, and for a much cheaper price. I was worried about amps for so cheap, but don't. High powered, long lasting, everything I'd expect from a high end amp costing $400+ for much less.
Pros:
Great power for an amazing price, absolutly love it!!!
Cons:
The screws to install the wiring (power, ground, speaker) are at a weird angle, but once in work fine. Also the knobs to adjust the bass and other setting require a pretty small flat head screw driver, can't use regular size philips or flat head. I have all sorts of sizes, but you may need to buy one if you don't have as much tools as I do.

Excellent product

Written By Scott A, Paducah, KY on Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp is great for running subs. I have installed it in my wifes suburban, along with a line converter, and one 10in kicker 4ohm dual voice coil sub. It is ran in a parallel circuit so it drops the load down to 2omhs. The amp really puts out great power and sound quality. I'm sure this amp would have no problem pushing (2) 12in subs, as long as you ran them in a parallel circuit and took advantage of the 2ohm capacity of this amp. I do agree that the wire connections being on a 45 degree angle makes it a little bit more tedeous, but its not that big a deal, and overall I'm extremely happy with this amp. It comes with the remote volume control too, and thats a big plus also.
Pros:
lots of power, and great sound quality.
Cons:
wire connections are a bit odd to get to, but no step for a stepper!

AMAZING

Written By Pres.T, Richmond VA on Thursday, September 20, 2012

I bought this used with a B-12 sub and i wasn't expecting the sheer power i got and the clarity. This is my first amp and i easily wired it myself, I drive an 02 Escape and the is zero i repeat ZERO rattle of the sub or my car but it hits so hard i can feel my heart vibrate. Every-time it hits i smile, so i drive down the road looking like the smiling idiot with his music WAY too loud. If you want something to power your sub this will certainly do, it its the best money ever spent.
Pros:
Ease of installation Power of bass output EVERYTHING

i love this amp. at first i was unsure of sound ordinance but after using this amp for almost a year i haven't had a single problem. paired with 2 JL W1V2 8in subs this thing powers them perfectly. people think i have 2 12in subs. Fits right under the passenger seat of a 2004 nissan frontier
Pros:
-Not expensive -comes with remote to control volume -pairs the speakers by itself to get the lowest ohm rating -looks cool
Cons:
-wont accept 4 or 0 gauge wire

First time buyer

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp seem to be a good fit for the the Sound Ordinance 12" sub and box purchased together, i had a problem with the newly purchased JVC radio sub rca out puts not getting signal back to the amp. Once i got the radio issues resolved the amps remote bass control did not function and i had to return the amp for an exchange. Crutchfields tech center was very helpful and we returned the amp for a replacement. Once the amp was hooked up and everything was working it was good, didn't hit as hard as i would like but again the price was reasonable and the over all sound is good, its not a competition amp.
Pros:
easy install, good price.
Cons:
Its not a competition amp.

Great Amp For the Value!

Written By Caleb M., Jacksonville, AL on Monday, June 18, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amp does everything it said it would do. Great amp for the price. But having a lower price comes at a price. The design for this thing is god awful. With the RCA inputs and Speaker inputs being on opposite sides, my mounting options became severely limited. Also, the screw in terminals being covered by the overhanging chrome looking piece.......what? Who thought that would be a good idea? Even though the design is awful, it definitely gets the job done, and it does it well. I love the remote with the amp, it comes in handy.
Pros:
Awesome sound, Great Value, Remote is handy
Cons:
Design is awful

Nice amp strange design

Written By Ray Benn, Washington, DC on Friday, June 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice power for the price point and plenty of features. I have it powering a single 12in audiobahn 400watt sub and it hits nice and low! My Only gripe is the design of the screw terminal and mounting brackets. The screw terminals are angled and the mounting bracket gets in the way of the my tools! Also the frequency knobs are only numbered for min and max values I would love to know exactly where the other values are but that's minor! I will purchase more S/O gear for my wife's car good product and excellent price
Pros:
Price performance and doesn't get to warm even in warm weather
Cons:
Screw terminal, frequency knobs and mounting bracket design
