AudioControl

Our take on the AudioControl LC2i

by Zak Billmeier

Looking for great sound from your factory radio? Would you like to upgrade your car's premium system? AudioControl's LC2i line output converter takes amplified speaker-level signals and converts them into high-quality preamp signals that can be fed to another processor or amplifier. In other words, it lets you create an awesome car audio system without disturbing your factory controls or features.

Get your bass back
Some factory radios dial down the bass as you turn up the volume to protect their speakers. The problem is, they don't give it back when you upgrade to a nice set of aftermarket speakers. AudioControl packs the LC2i with their AccuBASS™ circuitry that reverses the factory bass rolloff, giving you the bass you need to enjoy your music to the fullest. Place the LC2i between your factory system and your bass amp, and you'll hear a huge difference in bass response.

High-voltage signal for great sound
Some premium systems use multi-wire speaker cables for systems with multiple speakers. The LC2i features two speaker-level inputs that let you connect amplified signals up to 400 watts, including cables from Bose® and other premium factory systems. The LC2i then sends out a high-powered preamp signal — up to 9.5 volts RMS — that helps every amp perform to its maximum ability.

Convenience
The optional dash-mount remote control allows you to adjust the level of your sub channel on the go. The speaker-level inputs sense incoming signals and turn on the LC2i, while a built-in 12-volt trigger tells your amps or other gear to turn on when you start your car.

    Specifications

    Features

Overview: The AudioControl LC2i is an active, high-voltage OEM line converter. This compact, two-channel processor with active input circuitry, accepts speaker-level signals of up to 400-watts per channel from factory-installed source units or amplifiers. It then converts the speaker-level signals to high-quality pre-amp signals that can then be directed to after market processors and/or amplifiers. You no longer have to compromise when performing basic amplifier additions to factory installed audio systems. You can enjoy maximum sound quality while maintaining the use of your factory volume and steering wheel controls.

Compact Chassis Design: The AudioControl LC2i active, high-voltage OEM line converter features a compact chassis for an unobtrusive installation.

Two Channel Speaker-Level Input: The AudioControl LC2i features two channels of active speaker-level inputs that accept up to 400-watt signals. The two-channel line-output converter features four removable flat-head set-screw terminals for quick connection.

9.5V Preamp Outputs: The AudioControl LC2i is equipped with 9.5-volt preamp outputs w/ level matching controls. It features a pair of Main preamp outputs (for full-range amplifiers) and a pair of Bass preamp outputs (for subwoofer amplifiers).

Active Circuitry: The active circuitry used in the LC2i provides dramatically better sound quality and does not compromise the bass response.

AccuBass: The AudioControl LC2i features AccuBass processing for correction of bass roll-off. AccuBass processing automatically corrects for the bass roll-off that is common with many factory installed audio systems. AccuBass Bass Compensation works at any volume level.

Threshold & Level Controls: Simple "Threshold" and "Level" controls allow users to optimize the bass response to match their speaker system.

GTO (Great Turn On): The AudioControl LC2i utilizes selectable GTO auto sensing turn-on circuitry so no remote wire is needed. The LC2i turns on using the unit's speaker-level inputs. It also provides a 12-volt trigger output to turn on your amplifier.

Remote Level Control: The AudioControl LC2i is equipped with a Bass Control Input (RJ-11) for optional remote bass level control (sold separately).

Mounting: The LC2i features integrated mounting flanges to mount the unit under a seat, in the trunk, or under the dash. No mounting hardware is supplied.

Power Connections: The AudioControl LC2i requires a hardwired power and ground connection to your vehicle's 12-volt electrical system. The line-output converter features removable flat-head set-screw terminals for simple connection.

    AudioControl LC2i

Written By Tom R., Upstate New York on Sunday, May 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching different options, I chose the LC2i to add a stealth subwoofer to a newly purchased VW Golf. I have done numerous installs in the past, but this one differred as it is a "grown-up" application, meant to be undetectable (except to the ears). This Audiocontrol device is oustanding. The quality and quantity of the signal provides clarity and low noise, and the GTO function works perfectly, and in fact provided a switched 12 volt supply for the amp that was installed with it, a Rockford Fosgate R500 1D. The setup instructions are "subtle," to put it nicely. However there is a wealth of information available, as well as great customer support with Audiocontrol.
    Pros:
High quality signal Tuning flexibility Excellent build quality
    Cons:
    Vague instructions

    Worth every penny!

Written By Hags, Stafford, VA on Saturday, April 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this on my 2012 Dodge Challenger and this is one amazing LOC. I tapped into my rear right speaker and it gives an amazing, strong signal to my 300watt Sony amp. The signal quality is just as good a RCA output on an aftermarket radio but this device allows me to keep my Bluetooth, steering wheel controls and Satellite radio on my stock system. Install is easy for a rookie like me, took about 2 hours but most of that time was spent making a nice clean setup. I used a line tap(from auto zone) from my fuse box to power the LC2i.
    Pros:
Great for amps that don't have adjustment knobs, signal is strong and just as good as an RCA, automatically turns on with your factory stereo
    Cons:
    none

I am a 40 yr old studio engineer. I was skeptical about getting this for my new Silverado. Cheap, yea but whatever. I just wanted to get some quality sound in my truck and get rid of the factory crap. I ordered this unit from Crutchfield with the hopes of it at least turning on my amp. But WOW I was freakin amazed... Blew me away.. Sound quality (and I know sound quality) this unit is the boss.
    Pros:
ALL OF THEM, IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THIS UNIT. LOOK NO FURTHER

    LC2i Mustang Shaker 500

Written By Ernest, New Mexico on Wednesday, February 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product helped get me more sub-woofer volume from the stock mustang system that I installed an amp and a 10" sub in the trunk. The speaker level inputs from the Shaker 500 weren't doing a good enough job supplying my amp with a good signal. Tried two different brand loc's, went pure line level and I even bought another amp trying to nail down this issue. Since adding the LC2i I can now turn down my amp gain and have plenty of room to spare. Didn't notice any depth improvements in the low frequency ranges and the GTO didn't work but the sub-woofer volume range is improved and the whole system sounds much richer as a result. For me it was worth the money, thank you Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Definitely improves signal strength to the amplifier inputs.
    Cons:
GTO feature didn't work with my application and wish the lows were a tad bit lower.

    Great Product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hooked the AudioControl LC2i up to my stock stereo in my 2012 Subaru Impreza with no issues. The directions were straight forward and easy to understand. After I hooked up my amp and sub woofer, I plunged the battery back up and was anxious to test this product out. At first, the amp didn't kick on with the remote wire that was attached to the AudioControl LC2i, but I quickly figured out that my fuse was blown on my power wire that connected my amp. I replace the fuse and was extremely excited that everything was working and the base that came out of my sub-woofer was amazing!! I am very pleased with this product and everything worked like it should. I would recommend this product to anyone.
    Pros:
Easy to install, Great base sound from stock stereo, small and easy to hide
    Cons:
None that I can think of

    2012 mustang shaker 500

Written By Anonymous, Jacksonville, AR on Thursday, February 14, 2013

Works great with my shaker 500, you just have to set the accubass Threshold to the lowest setting then you can turn the bass level up to what you desire. The AccuBass you can leave in the middle or turn it up to add deeper bass to your radio since the shaker 500 does not have roll off bass.
    Pros:
Best way to add bass to a factor radio Company support response time
    Cons:
no directions for dealing with radios that don't have roll off bass

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first purchased a vehicle specific sub enclose with a 10" sub and built in 300W amp with built in hi-level inputs. It was rather high end and rather expensive. I tapped into the rear speaker wires for the input. I was so disappointed with that setup I wound up returning it, output was just subpar and even with the gain all the way up I could not get the bass level high enough compared to the other speakers. Thinking it was the equipment I went back to what I knew, a JL Audio 10" sub and this time a 600W amp to drive it. The amp also had built in hi-level inputs and I hooked it up the same rear speaker inputs. I once again was not happy with the volume level and had to resort to using the bass boost on the amp to get the sub volume up and was not happy as the bass response was no longer linear. Being more familiar with the equipment I now knew the issue wasn't there, it simply had to be the level of signal going into the amp as compared to the volume going to the speakers. I needed a stronger, louder input going into the amp. I picked up an LC2i and the difference is amazing. I went from being disappointed with the amp gain at 5/6 and the bass boost at 6db to now the sub hits very hard with the amp gain at 1/2 and the bass boost at 0db. (I'm not even using the AccuBass) I had no idea an external converter could make such a difference but the ability to control the signal level going into the amp really helped to get the full potential out of my amp and sub
    Pros:
    Sound quality and additional volume
    Cons:
None really. It's another device to install but it's small.

    lci

Written By Anonymous, fort worth texas on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this product plus the optional bass remote on my Daughters new 2013 ford focus with my ford touch/sony hd/navigation radio with factory amp and factory sub in the trunk. I simply ran a power wire from the battery to the trunk where the alpine mrp500 was placed under the trunk mat. I used the the wires going into the factory sub for the input of the lci. No turn on wire required. Used the 12 volt off the alpine amp to power the lci. Boom turned on all the system and the two alpine twelves sound great. I did not even adjust the lci just used it how it came and turned the gain down to half on the amp which is powering two alpine type s shallow mounts. The bass knob on the dash made it great to turn it up when needed which is does need to be at all. Going to buy one for my new ford f150
    Pros:
Easy install and way to add amp to factory system
    Cons:
    none

I recently added a subwoofer and amplifiers to my factory receiver and have tried many line output converters including the pac models, but was less than impressed with the sound quality of these converters. I recently decided to try the Audiocontrol LC2i converter and was amazed at the improved sound quality! The extra dough for the audiocontrol LC2i is well worth it !

2011 F-150 Sony Factory Sub Replacement

Written By Steve, NC on Monday, December 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like many others, I don't normally write reviews on products purchased online. However, I rely heavily on these, so I thought it only fair that I write one that might help someone else. I purchased this to install in my F-150 Platinum in order to replace the Sony factory subwoofer and maintain the factory system. I used a JL 500/1 amp and 10" JL sub with an enclosure I built myself to place under the rear seat. I had already set up the amp installation with a local installer, but after deciding to purchase the LC2i (because the installer said he would need to use some sort of LOC) I thought maybe I could try this myself. 20 years ago I used to install car audio systems as a hobby, but a lot has changed with factory audio and the wiring has gotten a lot more complex. After researching some online forums I found that running the power from the battery to where I had the amp and LC2i mounted would be pretty easy. It wasn't until after I looked a little closer at the LC2i that I noticed it had the GTO feature. It took about an hour to run the power from the battery and get everything wired up (used both sets of DVC factory sub line inputs for signal), but once it was wired the LC2i worked like a champ. Using the GTO feature I avoided having to find a remote wire for the amp, and the LC2i picked up my incoming audio signal immediately. While I haven't finished tuning it, I can tell you that this is a MUST HAVE if you are installing a mono amp to replace your factory sub.
    Pros:
Ease of installation and the GTO feature in place of a remote turn-on wire.
    Cons:
None for me...this thing works exactly as designed

    Small than it looks

Written By Matthew, Santee, CA on Saturday, December 22, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ya know, my pet peeve is trying to hide these factory add on pieces just because you already have to find a place for the amp and wiring, but man this thing is tiny, it fit behind my wife's focus factory cd player no problem. Used wire taps (I know I know not the wisest choice, but they are holding strong) and the unit turns right on with the car. I went ahead and used the audio sensing feature but if it quits working I will tap into the switched 12v for the remote, but at the moment not necessary. The 9V max pre-outs are awesome, puts a super strong signal to your amp, I bared had to use the gain/trim. Great overall build and product, seems the company really stands behind their products. Didn't find any use for the accubass feature, I left all the dials in the middle and it worked out just fine, figured I would use the amp as my gain/trim....worked out just fine.
    Pros:
Perfect for factory stereos, strong pre-outs
    Cons:
None that I know of...so far

    Awesome Sound

Written By Dave, NJ on Thursday, November 08, 2012

This thing is awesome, read a prior review by someone with a WRX and got nervous because it wasn't a good review, but I think that user installed it wrong. In the wrx you need to tap the front speakers as the EQ pushes everything to the fronts. The sound vs using the high level inputs on a kenwood amp is night and day. Sounds like it should sound. Love the adjustability and it just sounds insane! Get this now.

    Works perfectly

Written By Johann, Elk Grove, CA on Saturday, November 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Audio Control LC2i works perfectly as advertised. My Mustang w/ Shaker 500 sounded good, but it lacked deeper bass. There are no Line-Outs on the head unit. The LC2i took a good audio signal from the door subwoofer outs and gave a strong signal to my new subwoofer amp in the trunk. The remote control for it works well too and it is easy to mount anywhere. Because the LC2i only draws 150mA, tapping for power was simple. A few caveats... the settings are a bit tricky to get right, but work well once you figure it out. The youtube video helps. A more detailed technical instruction sheet would have improved things. Lastly, the compact size made it a breeze for mounting. This LOC made adding an amplifier to my Shaker 500 a breeze and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their factory sound. A+ Product.
    Pros:
Perfect design, flexible audio settings, compact, remote control accessory works well too. Not too expensive.
    Cons:
    Paltry instructions.

    Audio Control LC2i - 2007 Range Rover

Written By Ben L, Ann Arbor, MI on Friday, November 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to be able to add an aftermarket amp and sub in my 2007 Range Rover (LM 322) with factory stereo/nav/logic 7 surround sound. The car came with a weak factory sub/amp so I removed the stock sub and tapped into the wiring from the stock amp, after the stock sub. I was told to keep the stock amp because of the way the Range Rover electronics work. So I took the wires from the stock sub and wired them to the LC2i +/- line inputs.

What is nice about the LC2i is that it has Remote In, Remote Out, and a 12V+ terminals on it to be able to turn on/off the amp when turning on/off the car. You don't need a separate remote turn on. So I wired the 12V+ to a constant power source, and the Remote Out to my aftermarket amp, and both the LC2i and aftermarket amp only turn on when the car is is switched on.

Since I don't have one of those factory radios that plateaus the bass levels as the volume increases, I just adjust the LC2i's settings accordingly. I turned the Bass Threshold knob all the way up (clockwise), and then the AccuBASS knob + Main level knob + Bass level knob all the way down (counter-clockwise). However, I had to search online forums and what not for proper adjustment settings because the LC2i didn't come with any detailed instructions based on the kind of stereo you had. It just explains what the GTO and AccuBASS are.
    Pros:
Remote Turn-On Two Sets of Line-Outs for adding up to two amps Level Adjustments Size
    Cons:
No detailed installation or sound adjustment instructions

    Best thing since sliced bread!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm 38, and back when I was younger, I used to install alot of stereos for friends, etc. Things have come along way since then, and this product is definately one of the best things I've seen! Its simple to install, and the adjustments are very straight forward. Its really compact, and I love the fact that it automatically turns on when it senses a signal from the speakers inputs. It also has a remote out connection, so you can hook it to your amp, and it will turn the amp on and off automatically too when you turn your radio on and off. It makes putting amps, etc so simple when running along with factory radios, and speakers. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their factory system.
    Pros:
compact design, auto on, off, and the ability to run a remote wire from it to your amp, and turn it on and off automatically too! The sound reproduction is excellent also.
    Cons:
    NONE
