JL Audio

Enclosed Subwoofers 101

An enclosed subwoofer is a box with a subwoofer already installed. The advantage to buying an enclosed sub is that the manufacturer made the sub, then designed and built the box as a perfect match, so you'll get the best possible performance. Every enclosed sub has a maximum RMS power handling rating, so pair it with an amp with a similar RMS power rating to get the best performance.

Our take on the JL Audio CS110RG-W3v3

    Features

Overview: This JL Audio PowerWedge subwoofer enclosure is designed around JL Audio's W3v3 subwoofer, delivering tight, powerful bass with enhanced power handling capabilities. The PowerWedge enclosure is properly sized and tuned for the mounted 10" JL Audio W3v3-2 2-ohm woofer.

PowerWedge Enclosure: The PowerWedge enclosure features solid V-groove MDF construction with internal bracing to ensure structural integrity. The subwoofer enclosure features an angled back design to help save space in the cargo area of your vehicle. The W3v3 PowerWedge enclosure is finished in high-grade automotive gray carpet and features a steel-mesh grille to protect the loaded JL Audio W3v3-2 woofer. The JL Audio PowerWedge enclosure features a pair of gold-plated 5-way binding posts on the left side of the box. The JL Audio subwoofer enclosure has a installation depth of 11.25".

10" W3v3 Woofer: The JL Audio PowerWedge subwoofer enclosure features a mounted, front-firing 2-ohm 10" JL Audio W3v3-series woofer:

    • Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
    • Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
    • Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.
    • Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.
    • Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
    • Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.

    another overrated, overpriced jl product

Written By kevlar, philly burbs on Monday, December 03, 2012

This sub enclosure was installed in a super cab ranger with the hopes of some solid low end. Unfortunately i'm still disappointed 3.5 yrs later. The cab of a ranger is a small space and i thought this sub would be plenty with all the glowing reviews. I powered this sub with an older eclipse "made in usa" amp delivering 400 watts rms. thinking maybe the amp seen better days i purchased a rockford p325.2 from crutchfield with the same so so results. I decided to put my 15 year old bazooka bass tube back in and it sounds just as good if not better.
    Pros:
excellent build quality, nice looking box. it still works after 3.5 years. high resale value for jl audio products on craigslist
    Cons:
too much cash for not enough sound

    Perfection

Written By Jon, Apple valley, ca on Thursday, October 25, 2012

Audiophile quality. With the perfectly matched box and a standout driver, you really can't go wrong. Sound is superb. Gets loud if u want it that way... Jl is top shelf, you'll know why once u have one. Doesn't need a grip of power. Blends well with any system..
    Pros:
    Sound quality, looks great, perfect
    Cons:
Price is steep for a single driver, but you get what you pay for.

    Tight Bass

Written By Morgan12, Ellington, CT on Sunday, September 02, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice sounding sub. Powered by a Boston Acoustics GTA-400m, it delivers just the right amount of thump in my 4Runner. The tight bass is exactly what my system was missing. Before purchasing this sub I considered the Stealthbox, but decided to go with the PowerWedge due to the price and portability. This is my first JL Audio purchase and now I understand what all the hype is about.
    Pros:
    Powerful, tight bass, portability
    Cons:
    None

    Pounds hard

Written By Jim M., Hazen, ND on Sunday, April 29, 2012

This sub pounds hard. I powered it the an MTX 150W amp. Sounds great in my boat. I am upgrading the amp to a JL m700/5, which I imagine will help immensely. I used to have 2 Rockford 12" subs in my old car from 1995 or so. This one little sub made those sound like a pair of 6x9's.

Great sub but not for big trunks

Written By Derick, Dallas, TX on Friday, November 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had JL subs in the past and I trust their products. I put this sub in a '09 Dodge Challenger. I think the trunk is just too big for 1-10" sub. You can really hear and feel the bass with the seat folded down. But with it up, it's almost the difference between night and day. You almost can not hear any bass. If you're going to install in a hatchback or smaller vehicle, I think you'd be very happy with this sub. And as stated in other reviews, if you're wanting something that is going to punch you in the chest and turn heads, this is not the sub.
    Pros:
The sub puts out great sound and takes up little space.
    Cons:
I can't hear the bass unless the seats are folded down.

    BEST BOOM FOR THE BUCK

Written By Sean, Seattle, WA on Sunday, September 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub exceeded my expectations! I'm used to having a sub directly behid me in a truck and really feeling the bass. I recently bought a Subaru Outback and was okay with having a little less pound. I powered the sub with an 800watt Pioneer amp (360 RMS... which isn't pushing the sub to it's full potential!). I was pretty impressed with how much sound this put out- it is clean bass even at high volumes... it is also very tight, and I could still feel it like it was right behind the seat! I would recommend this sub to anyone, haven't heard anything that compares in this price range. My past experience was with MTX, Kicker, Rockford, Kenwood, and Pioneer. None compare to the JL.

    Very Nice Sub

Written By Ben, 757, Virginia on Tuesday, July 26, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub for those not looking to have everyone at the stoplight hating them. It is not in a ported box so don't expect a boomy sub. This thing provides amazing tight, punchy bass that was exactly like what I was looking for. I have it hooked up to a 500w RMS @ 2ohm mono amp and it sounds great. I really give this thing a workout too, listening to lots of metal with long, fast double bass rolls. It keeps up suprisingly well, and sounds better every day. If you're looking for a sub/enclosure combo that will add great sounding, tight bass to fill out your system, this a great choice.

    Will not satisfy your desires

Written By CMO, Virginia on Sunday, May 22, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Perhaps my expectations for this sub were too high. I have a Nissan Sentra and read a review of an Acura TL saying he could hear this sub pounding in his trunk. I hoped to get the same results. I have all CEA-2006 compliant equipment and true to gauge wiring (8 gauge power wire, 500W rms mono amp @ 2 ohms, 10 gauge twisted speaker wire). This sub sounds very good when you turn the battery on and are just sitting there. It really does pound. But when you get on the express-way and are going 65 mph with the windows down.. you cannot hear the sub any more, and it does not hit you in the chest either. I returned for a 10" Kicker Solo L5 sub (2 ohm load) in a pre-fab ported box (slanted truck style box). This sub crushes the 10" W3. The W3 moves 75 sq inches, the L5 moves 100.. No replacement for displacement! The port also helps. The sound quality is exactly the same, do not believe bad reviews of square subs from kicker just being sloppy-loud subs. The 10" L5 looks great, actually POUNDS you in your seat at hwy speeds, takes up 1" less in bottom depth, and is cheaper in price.

I bought this used the other day and hooked it up to an Alpine 2-Ch amp. RMS output is rated at 130 Watts bridged for the amp. The guy who installed the amp/sub said it slammed and that the amp had to be pushing way more wattage than its rated or this was the best sub/box combo he's ever heard.

    JL Audio CS110RG-W3v3

Written By Anonymous, Austin, TX on Friday, July 30, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm almost 40 and have had a sub in every vehicle I have owned. This one went into a 2009 Acura TL with the "upgraded" factory system. I tried to get by with the 8" factory free air sub, but there is NO comparison. The sound quality is amazing and it can get WAY louder than what I need during a regular commute when I want to crank it, but it remains clean and punchy. I listen to classic rock, country, XM radio bluesville, some alternative, and sometimes R&B/dance stuff like the Black Eyed Peas. On rock and country, the bass guitar is clear and defined, and you can feel the kick drum. Dance music sounds like a club on wheels. This box fits perfectly in the middle of my truck against the back seats, takes up almost zero truck space. I paired it with the JL 250/1v2 amp, and added a remote bass knob. It is more than enough for my TL. I am extremely satisfied. This is the best sub I have ever heard.

Perfect choice for quality sound at any volume!

Written By Jesse, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, October 01, 2009

I've been a fan of JL Audio for many years. I used to go to IASCA competitions and every audio gathering there was, ten years ago. So when I was ready to get into it again I went right to JL knowing they have amazing sound quality and can handle abuse. I did some research starting with the W0 that are getting phased out to the W7 line. I chose the W3v3 because Im extreamly picky about sound quality at all volumes, and I chose the 10" for space. It fits PERFECTLY in my hatchback. I wanted a speaker that has amazing quality even when its so loud you cant hear yourself yell. I didn't think Id need anything more than the W3v3 because I wont be compeating. This sub will produce very sharp snappy bass and can rumble the low notes too. If you want very high quality and volume at the same time this is your set up. For those that want to know Im useing the Clarion 1550 amp thats on sale now which is over powering it but I have it turned down, way down. I chose it so I could add more subs later or upgrade to the 6 or 7 series if I did decide to go into competition again.

I love this sub, I did not want that real sloppy bass you hear all the time, I wanted clean punchy bass for drums and such that you can feel, this does it. I dont even turn the bass boost up for hard hitting type bass. I paired it up with the MTX 1000XD running 500w at 4 ohms with 4 ga rockford fosgate amp install kit and 10 ga speaker wire. Was worth every penny for the pair, very very clean bass.

    loved this sub

Written By 96CMRO_2_06X, virginia on Thursday, October 09, 2008

I had this sub installed into my 96 Camaro with a stealth box powered by a Kicker 08ZX750.1 and lemme tell you, my friend had a set up of two rockford fosgate punch 12" subs powered by a JL sub, im not sure which, and it put out good sound but my set up blew his out of the water

it was the combination of the car acoustics with the open trunk to the car and the power and strength of the sub all together, my car was already a head turner but once i had this installed i was turning even more heads setting off car alarms in beach parking garages and of course getting pulled over.. haha

i would recommend, if you are going to get this sub to get a decent amp to supply it some good power, you dont need two 12" subs just one 10" w3v3 i assure you, if you do it right you will not be let down by this product

    JL Audio CS110RG-W3v3

Written By Jim, NJ on Thursday, September 25, 2008

I picked one of these up a little less than a Year ago, right when they changed from 10w3v2 to 10w3v3, and I have been quite impressed. I have it in a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse and Im powering it with a now "Obsolete" JL A1400 Amp. Running at 4ohms, its getting 320watts RMS @14.4 volts (basic standard for rating amps). Perfect match of power for this sub.
The amp was set up by a professional/JL Authorized Installer and it really puts out. Quite surprising for a single 10 in a sealed box. This sub delivers tight clean bass, which is great. Yeah, its kinda spendy for a single 10 but it definitely sounds better then lower end stuff.

The quality and construction is great. They don't use one of those cheap foam rubber surrounds, its real rubber so it wont deteriorate too soon. And its made in the USA

If your looking to be heard from blocks away, go for a 12 in a ported box. This sub has TONS of bass for inside a car, It can definitely get loud enough to have to yell to communicate with somebody else in the car. If I fold the seats down and fire it directly into the listening area and roll the windows down, you can definitely hear this thing hit from outside the car. Best way to explain it is that you wont FEEL this walking down the street when I drive by, but youll hear it if I want you to. Has clean tight bass that doesnt bleed and Has an impressive range.

Highly recommended, got two other people hooked on this same sub for their cars.
