Want a camera you can grow into? Try a "hybrid."

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, many hybrids have advanced control and processing options that you can explore for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, and feature interchangeable add-on lenses for different shooting scenarios. But their hybrid design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

Our take on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2CK Kit

by Dave Bar

The soul of an SLR — in the body of a point-and-shoot
Looking for a camera with gorgeous picture quality and flexible controls, but less bulk and cost than a high-end SLR? Check out Panasonic's pint-sized DMC-GF2CK. This camera snaps beautiful, silky smooth photos and records crisp HD video, thanks to a high-quality image sensor that's larger than those found in most point-and-shoot models. Yet, the 'GF2 sports a sleek, compact body that's easier to carry along on a sightseeing tour or a mountain hike. An intuitive, 3" touchscreen LCD makes it as easy to use as it is to carry. The included wide-angle lens lets you record breathtaking landscapes, large group shots, and intimate interiors. Add optional interchangeable lenses for even more shooting versatility.

To 3D or not to 3D?
Are you thinking you may want to try 3D photography in the future, but aren't sure about it now? The 'GF2 has you covered. Just add Panasonic's optional 3D conversion lens and you can start shooting dramatic-looking 3D photos. How is this possible? The additional lens actually contains two sets of optical elements that simultaneously record left and right images, which are then stored on the camera's memory card. All you have to do is hook the cam up to your compatible 3D HDTV, put on your 3D glasses, and enjoy the slide show!

    Features

Overview: The Panasonic DMC-GF2 is a digital still camera with interchangeable lenses in an ultra-compact package. This package (DMC-GF2C) includes the H-H014 LUMIX G 14mm/F2.5 ASPH lens.

Compatible Lenses: The GF2 is compatible with lenses that have the Micro Four Thirds mount. Optional lenses include the H-FS014042 zoom lens and H-FT012 3D lens. Lenses with the Four Thirds mount specifications can also be used with the DMW-MA1 mount adapter.

Recording Media: The DMC-GF2 records images onto SD, SDHC, and SDXC Memory Cards. The camera is compatible with SD cards from 8 MB to 2 GB, SDHC cards from 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC cards from 48 GB to 64 GB.

Note: The camera comes with no memory cards, and does not have built-in internal memory.

Image Sensor: For optimal image quality, the camera uses a 4/3" (17.3mm x 13mm) Live MOS image sensor with approximately 13.06-million total pixels and 12.1-million effective pixels.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW formats. The camera can also record HD movies in AVHCD (MPEG4 video/H.264 audio) for playback on your HDTV using an HDMI connection or SD movies in Motion JPEG format with audio for playback on your PC. When equipped with the optional H-FT012 3D lens, the camera can take 3D pictures, and store them in MPO format (3D).

Image Quality: You can set the image quality as follows:

    • Fine: Low compression; gives priority to picture quality
    • Standard: High compression; gives priority to the number of recordable pictures
    • RAW: Uncompressed; must be processed on a PC
    • RAW + Standard: In addition to the RAW (uncompressed) image, the camera takes a standard equivalent JPEG image simultaneously
    • RAW + Fine: In addition to the RAW (uncompressed) image, the camera takes a fine equivalent JPEG image simultaneously

Image Resolution/Compression: You can change the resolution and compression settings to suit the purpose of the image you're about to shoot. You can choose from the following resolutions for still images:

Motion Pictures: In addition, you can shoot motion pictures in 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios, at the following resolutions and frame rates:

    • AVCHD (1080i) (16:9):
      • FSH: 1920 x 1080, 60 fps, 17 Mbps

Battery: The GF2 is powered by a rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery (DMW-BLD10PP). When used with the supplied H-H014 lens, you get approximately 320 images, using the 3.0" LCD monitor. Playback time using the LCD monitor is approximately 250 minutes. Recording and playback times vary according to which lens is mounted on the camera. The battery takes approximately 120 minutes to fully charge with the supplied DE-A93B battery charger.

LCD Touch Panel Monitor: The DMC-GF2 has a 3" TFT color LCD Touch Panel monitor featuring approximately 460,000 dots. It has approximately 100% field of view. The monitor's brightness and color can be adjusted to any of 7 levels. The touch panel allows you to easily operate the camera, including setting the focus or releasing the shutter.

Optional External Viewfinder: An optional external live viewfinder (DMW-LVF1, sold separately) attaches to the camera's hot shoe and allows you to hold the camera up to your eye to frame your subject as you record. The LVF1 has a 0° to 90° adjustable angle so you can view the subject even when shooting at a low camera angle. A built-in diopter allows you to adjust the focus of the viewfinder to suit your vision. Because the LVF1 uses the hot shoe, you cannot use the external viewfinder with an external flash.

Pop-up Flash: The GF2 has a pop-up flash that increases the overall height of the camera by approximately 1" when open. With the supplied H-H014 lens, the flash range is 1.64' to 15.7' (ISO Sensitivity set to Auto). The flash range varies depending upon the lens that is attached. Available flash modes include:

    • Auto: The flash is automatically activated when the recording conditions make it necessary.
    • Auto/Red-eye Reduction: A pre-flash is activated before the main flash to reduce the red-eye phenomenon.
    • Forced Flash On: The flash is activated every time regardless of the recording conditions.
    • Forced Flash On/Red-eye Reduction: The flash is activated every time with a pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
    • Slow Sync: When taking pictures against a dark background landscape, this feature will slow the shutter speed when the flash is activated to make the background appear brighter.
    • Slow Sync/Red-eye Reduction: Same as Slow Sync, but with pre-flash to reduce red-eye effect.
    • Forced Flash Off: Flash is not activated regardless of the recording conditions.

Shooting Modes: The top-mounted mode dial allows you to choose from the following camera modes:

    • Program AE: the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject
    • Aperture-priority AE: the shutter speed is automatically determined by the aperture value you set

    • Manual Exposure: the exposure is adjusted by the aperture value and the shutter speed, which are manually adjusted
    • Intelligent Auto Mode: the camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and recording conditions. Recommended for beginners.
    • My Color Mode: Once the Mode Dial is set to My Color Mode, you can use the rear dial to choose from the following:

      • Sunset: for taking pictures of a sunset (red colors accentuated)
    • Custom Mode: allows you to take pictures with one of three sets of previously selected settings (C1, C2, C3)
    • Motion Picture Mode: this mode allows you to record motion images with audio

Self Timer: The self timer is useful when you want to include yourself in the picture when recording still images. The delay time for single shots can be set to 10 seconds or 2 seconds. You can also set the self timer to take 3 pictures after a 10 second delay. The second and third picture are taken in two second intervals after the first.

Exposure Compensation: If you are shooting against a bright background or strong backlight, you may need to correct the exposure so that the subject doesn't come out too dark. You can set the adjustments from -3 to +3 in 1/3-step increments.

Auto Bracket: In this mode, a maximum of 5 pictures are automatically recorded by each press of the shutter button according to the compensation range of the exposure. You can choose from the following:

    • Steps: 1/3 EV or 2/3 EV
    • Number of pictures: 3 or 5
    • Sequences: [0 / - / +] or [- / 0 / +]

ISO Sensitivity: ISO sensitivity represents the sensitivity to light in values. If you set the ISO sensitivity higher, the camera becomes more suitable for recording in dark places. When setting to Auto, the ISO sensitivity is automatically adjusted from ISO100 to ISO6400 according to the brightness. In the intelligent ISO setting, the camera will automatically set the optimal ISO sensitivity and the shutter speed according to the movement of the subject and the surrounding brightness. In the Preset ISO mode, you can select 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, or 6400 with the ISO increments set to 1EV. Auto Review lets you choose one of the following settings: Off, 1 second, 3 seconds, 5 seconds, or Hold. You can also view pictures at 4x zoom for 1, 3, or 5 seconds, if desired.

Resizing Pictures: This function is useful if you want to reduce the file size of the picture in cases when it needs to be attached to an e-mail or uploaded to a website. Once an image is resized, you can choose to keep the original image. You can set up to 100 pictures to be resized at one time.

Cropping Pictures: This function lets you trim unnecessary parts of the recorded picture. Motion pictures, pictures with text stamps, and RAW images (including RAW + Standard and RAW + Fine) cannot be cropped.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer, select, and print out pictures, regardless of the printer brand.
