Our take on the Denon DNP-720AE

by Marshall Chase

Unleash a world of digital music
Many music fans find themselves in a quandary. They have great-sounding systems that they don't want to replace, but feel like they're missing out on today's wide variety of digital music choices. You can access your music either from a networked computer or directly from your iPhone®, iPad®, or iPod touch®. Not only do you get a fast and convenient way to listen to your favorites, but friends and family members can share music from their portable Apple devices, too. Your device can also double as a Wi-Fi® system remote so you can control the '720AE from any room in the house. Requires a wireless home network.

    Good WiFi Internet Radio

Written By All Thumbs, Stone Mountain, Georgia on Thursday, May 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good WiFi Internet Radio. Great sound quality with my wireless network. FM tuner was marginal. The FM had multipath until I positioned the included antenna just right. Have owned other Denon tuners that were far superior. But I didn't buy it for FM. AM in my area doesn't have anything that interests me. Only real disappointment was the remote which interfered with my Polk XM tuner. Ended up only using the buttons on the tuner and am using the remote as a paper weight. Don't need it. Just another toy to play with. Plus I now have thousands of radio stations to choose from.
    Pros:
Good quality sound with wireless internet radio.
    Cons:
Remote sabotages other products. FM not so hot. If the display fails you'll never have any idea how to get anything and once you got it what it is.

    Wonderful Player

Written By Phillip G, Catoosa, Oklahoma on Monday, April 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Denon DNP-720AE was very easy to set up and get playing music. All the controls were intuitive, with the same logic applied as operating a CD player or cassette deck. Far better than the Logitech Squeezebox Tough for easy of operation, (which was a nightmare). The three line display is minimal but enough to navigate the folders and files of the media. The sound quality was very good with the higher bit rate MP3's and still good the the lower bit rate songs. But I did encounter many examples of excessive sibilance with a few of the 128kbs music files which I don't remember hearing with the Logitech before I returned that unit due to control issues. I don't know if the the files contain the sibilance and the Denon D/A converter is just revealing the defects in the songs, or if the Denon player is causing the problem. The AM/FM worked well with the supplied antennas. The Internet radio stations were numerous and easy to set up, control and save as favorites. The controls for that function were also intuitive and I was able to navigate and save stations without even looking at the instruction manual, because the control logic worked as one would expect. Build quality seems ok without opening the cover, however the unit does not sit flat on all four feet, and consequently rocks slightly when touched. I have not tried all functions of the player and use primarily to play MP3 files from a thumb drive.
    Pros:
Ease of control, overall good sound quality.
    Cons:
I cannot blame the DNP-720Ae for the sibilance heard in the few lower bit rate MP3 files without further research. So the only con I can think of is the rocking of the case due to all four feet not touching. I will later shim one foot about .020 inch to solve this problem.

    Denon DNP-720AE

Written By Leslie A, Los Angeles on Saturday, April 20, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Set up was very easy and the wireless was a breeze. The unit is solidly built and good looking, but the built-in screen is just too small to be practical when choosing music from a library. The big problem is that you cannot substitute the remote for the Denon Player App, which provides no volume control (despite their claim) and the graphics are only designed for the iphone (so on an ipad, they are big and clunky). The graphics do not scroll which means you have to do that with their complicated remote. If they could fully address the Apps shortcomings, the unit's display wouldn't be as much of an issue and push it into great product territory. But these shortcomings are major drawbacks for a product in todays market that is aimed at the music streaming market.
    Pros:
great looking, well built and easy set-up.
    Cons:
App is useless, screen is too small and remote is complicated. You must use the remote and the app together to select music.

    Denon DNP-720 AE

Written By Bryan, Grosse Pointe, MI on Thursday, April 18, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had my 5 disk CD player sitting, unused, on my stereo shelf for several years now and determined that I should look for a more up to date alternative and came across this system. I have a Denon receiver which I really like so I'm comfortable with their products. They're a step up from the big box stores, but not in the realm of the astronomically priced systems you run across on the audiophile sites. Crutchfield is one of the first places I look for these sort of items and I came across the DNP-720. I read a couple of reviews and purchased it pretty quickly. No regrets. It arrived quickly and was a super easy setup for me. I'm using it primarily for Pandora and some internet stations (there are thousands of them). Interfaced easily with my system and the sound quality is good.
    Pros:
Easy setup. Easy to use. Small profile. Does exactly what I bought it for and the price is nice.
    Cons:
I didn't think the Airplay quality (sourced from my iPhone 5) matched the sound quality of the internally sourced music. I've read other reviews which said it was good, but for me at least, it wasn't quite on the same level. Also, I wish that it remembered the setting it was using when you turn it off. I have to go through a couple of remote clicks to get it back to Pandora each time I use it. No big deal (and that is really not a con, just an observation).

    Just what I wanted

Written By Smokey, USA on Monday, April 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for something to replace XM and this is turning out to be just what I wanted. Fortunately the internet stations are grouped by genre and within a genre the list of stations seem endless. The unit hooked up to my existing stereo easily and once I entered my wi-fi password I was listening to music. It only took a couple minutes. Mostly I just wanted something to plug in and play through my existing stereo and this is the answer. Regarding the other features...I did notice that selecting a playlist on the computer overrides what's currently playing on the unit. I plugged in a jump drive to see how that works and found it to be a bit confusing. I'm far from a computer tech so maybe this is my inexperience but the unit would only play some of the songs I put on the drive. For others it would read "Format Error" - but even then some of the songs played - some did not. All play on my computer so that might be a limitation of the unit...you may want to research that topic if you intend to use the jump drive frequently. Also, the difference in volume from wi-fi to jump drive is noticeably different. The unit says there's an update everytime I turn the thing on but it still plays whatever station you were listening to when you powered down. There may be a way to turn that feature off - I don't know. The thing is kind of no frills but it plays all the sources I can't access with my traditional stereo and the sound quality is fine. I'm happy with my purchase.
    Pros:
Easily integrates with traditional stereo unit
    Cons:
It seems like this technology should be cheaper - but it's not.

I Guess There's a Reason It's the Price It Is

Written By Joe, East Haddam, CT on Wednesday, April 10, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm still tying to work through the complicated set-up process and get the home network to work properly with the device. The instructions are poorly written and assume you already know what you are doing. The displays don't match the instructions. The connection to the network and internet are occasional at best. It tends to reset and forget each time it is powered down. I wonder if the results are worth the effort. The gain of the output is totally variable depending of source so selecting internet radio stations or network sources is potentially deafening. Not a very sophisticated device in general for the cost. Even for the price.
    Pros:
    It works, sort of.
    Cons:
It's a real pain to set-up, maintain and operate. Pleasure becomes pain quickly.

Great product for what I wanted. This is a very easy product to interface with about any system. Sound quality and design very concise and to the point, what I would define as a no-nonsense type of player, you get exactly what's described in a very usable package.
    Pros:
Easy setup and integration, good quality and design

    Great Sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good sounding unit and easy to set up on my network . I got this unit on sale for $299 which is a great price. Very good interface. The Airplay works great with iTunes and my iPhone -iPad. You can also use other Media Players such as Media Monkey and best for me the unit can play High resolution 24 bit , 96,000 FLAC files which sound fantastic through the Denon. I am very happy that I bought the unit.
    Pros:
Great sounding unit. Very easy to use once you get the hang of the interface. Plays many different music file formats. Great sale price.
    Cons:
Wish it had a headphone jack.

    Great as always!

Written By Willy, Chicago on Sunday, April 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The denon is great and having wifi makes it much better than the others. I have compared the Cambridge , the marantz and found the from to be as good or better. The dac in the marantz is weak and the interface of the Cambridge is outdated! Of corse you can't go wrong at all for 300 bucks! Nothing needs to be said about Crutchfield , service support pricing it doesn't get any better!
    Pros:
    Price wifi airplay interface
    Cons:
Needs quality headphone out with volume no Bluetooth? If that's a real issue?

    Excellent Sound

Written By DanS, Charleston, SC on Sunday, April 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I should start by saying that there was initially an issue with the player "out of the box". It was able to detect and connect to my wireless network easily enough, but then refused to take my Pandora password. I tried several times, and double checked my password, but to no avail. I called Crutchfield tech support and the fellow I spoke with was stumped also. He finally said that he would contact Denon and get back to me. He called back about 5 or 10 minutes later and said that Denon recognized the problem, and that they suggested a firmware update. He walked me through the process, and asked me to get back to him as it would take 30 minutes or so. After the update was complete, the unit took the password and Pandora connection was accomplished easily. Crutchfield tech support is truly excellent! Now, to the unit itself. I use it for Pandora exclusively, and I must say that the sound quality is excellent. It's connected to my eight year-old Denon receiver via the stereo TV inputs as these were the only ones that were not already in use. Connnected in this way, the Pandora sound is superior to what I get from my Oppo Blu-ray player with its optical connection. The other advantage is that I don't need to keep my TV on in order to see what's playing. This really is an excellent unit, and I recommend it highly.
    Pros:
Terrific Pandora sound. Compact size. User-friendly.
    Cons:
Pandora password glitch was a problem at first, but was easily remedied thanks to Crutchfield tech support.

Not sure yet. I have a good router and my tablets all work fine but its not enough signal for it to connect. Says it has 55% but still not enough. It's in and out. Going to relocate my router to plug directly into it. Hopefully this helps

    Denon internet music player

Written By jimg, Alamosa, CO on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to post a review as I have tried the Grace Internet Audio Tuner and a Denon home theater receiver in the past. I just couldn't get the Grace unit to stream music from my Mac. The Denon home theater receiver was just too complicated for myself and my family. Couldn't get it to work correctly either. Now the good part: This unit is terrific. Everything works as promised. Really good sound for this non-audiophile. Most importantly the user interface is intuitive, so much so that this 57 year-old tech-geek could use it easily. What a pleasure! If you have a Mac environment you don't need to look any further. Streams form Itunes without a hitch. Internet radio works great. When I plugged my Ipod Nano 7h generation into the front port, wow!, it sounded much better than the Yamaha YDS-12 dock I had hooked up to my S700 Yamaha receiver. Just terrific!
    Pros:
Ease of use, reliability (with wired ethernet connection), sound quality.
    Cons:
    Can't think of any

I LOVE my new Denon network media player!

Written By Don, Seattle on Monday, January 07, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a welcomed addition to my component stereo system. It has excellent sound quality and works seamlessly with AirPlay and my iMac via wifi. Installation was a simple plug and play and only took a few minutes. Connecting it with the iMac and iTunes took only one click.

I deliberated over whether to buy this unit or a new receiver with AirPlay, but I couldn't find a receiver that I liked better than my existing component system. I also didn't like the Sonos stuff. The Denon network media player has turned out to be a excellent choice. I am very happy with this unit, including the sound quality, connectivity, ease of use, and integration with my existing components. With speakers in several rooms, I had the whole house rocking to TNT and other classics in no time, without interruption - and with excellent sound quality.

My wife and daughter also tried it with their iPhones and MacBooks and it connected and played perfectly. Haven't yet tried using it for internet or broadcast radio since all my favorites are stored in my extensive iTunes library.

Would I recommend this unit? ABSOLUTELY!
    Pros:
Fast, easy set-up. COMPATIBILITY with existing stereo components. EXCELLENT sound quality. AIRPLAY & ITUNES easy easy easy.
    Cons:
Haven't yet figured out how to use the Denon iPhone app or remote control.

easy to connect, easy to set up, and oohh what fun. excellent build quality and sound quality. it seems there is an unlimited amount of content available to this device. i could not be more pleased with deciding to add this to my system. i was a little skittish about setting this up and how it would connect to the router etc - no problem, as it was up and running and connected, wirelessly, to our home network in approx 5 mins. i love this gizmo! plus free shipping, delivered in two days, and double boxed too. another better than perfect transaction with crutchfield! thanks guys...
    Pros:
easy to set up and a heck of a lot of fun. unlimited content, great sound quality. great display - that's clear, informative, and easy to read.
    Cons:
    none really.

    Great update for older equipment!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been looking for a decent network player for awhile, until I saw this well-designed unit from Denon. It works very well with my older (80's) receiver. The unit is easy to set up, and has several other output options, as well as the older RCA-style jacks. The front-mounted USB port is a thoughtful touch, and the display screen is easy to read. The sound quality is excellent, even with a wireless connection. Another plus is that the unit has a internal power transformer...no ugly wall-wart! Overall, a great unit for serious music lovers!
    Pros:
    Set-up, good design,sound quality
    Cons:
A little bit pricey for some, but the quality is worth the price.
