Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the ZVOX Z-Base 580

by Marshall Chase

ZVOX brings you room-filling home theater sound — without a room full of speakers and wires — with their flagship TV audio system, the Z-Base 580. Just place it on your TV stand or A/V cabinet, set your flat-panel TV on top, and connect one cable — you've just installed a high-performance TV sound system in under 10 minutes. Flexible connection capabilities include analog and digital audio inputs, for both newer and older TVs and gear. This feature enables it to receive 5.1-channel surround signals from select over-the-air broadcasts or from your Blu-ray or DVD discs.

A low-profile, one-box solution
This one-piece system houses five 3-3/4" full-range speakers, two high-output 6-1/2" woofers, and built-in amplification — there's no need to use a separate receiver or run wires to any external speakers. The 580 is designed to serve as a base for most flat-panel TVs with screen sizes from 40" to 65".

Dialogue welcome. Blaring commercials — not so much.
If you can't hear the voices clearly, you miss out on the story. That's why ZVOX created a dialogue enhancement feature that gives new clarity and prominence to human voices. What's more, ZVOX knows how sponsors love to blast us out of our seats when they go to a commercial break. Thanks to the Output Leveling feature, the 580 keeps commercials on a short leash so you can just relax and enjoy the show.

Convenient features
The Z-Base 580 is a great place to plug in your iPod® or portable player for terrific sound. It has a minijack input on the front panel for easy access. The display on the 580 lights up from behind the front cloth surround then disappears when not in use. And the 580 learns the commands of your current TV remote, giving you one less clicker to keep track of. Signal-sensing circuitry powers the system on and off along with your TV.

Features

Overview: The ZVOX Z-Base 580 is a single-cabinet audio system for your flat-panel television. It combines high-quality speakers, a built-in amplifier, a built-in subwoofer, and ZVOX PhaseCue II Virtual Surround Sound processing to give you an easy surround sound solution. Since there are no speaker wires to deal with, you just need to connect the power and audio cables to get started.

TV Compatibility: Most 32"-72" flat-panel TVs can be placed directly on top the Z-Base 580 . The television should weigh 160 1bs or less The TV's pedestal base should not exceed 35" (w) x 15.5" (d).

Class D Amplifier: The ZVOX Z-Base 580 is bi-amplified, using a specially designed, highly-efficient 120 watt Class D amplifier that includes electronic contouring for superb frequency response.

Five 3.25" Drivers: The ZVOX Z-Base 580 uses five 3.25" main speaker drivers that use a long-throw design to create a remarkable wide range, and accurate sound.

Dual 6.25" Subwoofers: In addition to the five main speakers, the Z-Base 580 has two down firing high-mass, long-throw 6.25" subwoofers in a ported enclosure.

PhaseCue II Virtual Suround Sound: The Z-Base 580 uses ZVOX's proprietary PhaseCue II virtual surround processing to give you rich, three-dimensional sound with movies or music. PhaseCue II, as its name implies, manipulates the phase of the separate channels to "fool the ear" into believing that sound is coming from a variety of sources throughout the room. The benefits of PhaseCue II vary greatly based on program material. Live music and well-recorded modern movie soundtracks will deliver rich, three-dimensional sound - pulling the sound out from the speakers and into the room, literally surrounding the listener.

  • Music: With music, PhaseCue II creates a very wide soundstage - it literally sounds like you are listening to speakers eight feet apart from each other.
  • Movies: When listening to a good movie, the soundtrack will envelop you - putting you in the middle of the action.

Note: While the virtual surround experience isn't the same as a high-quality 5.1-channel system, the performance is much better than the speakers built-in to most TV's.

Wood (MDF) Cabinet with Hand-Lacquered Side Panels: The Z-Base 580 features a hand-built cabinet of heavy MDF with beautiful hand-lacquered high gloss end panels. Its low-profile design blends perfectly with most flat-panel TVs.

Disappearing Display: The Z-Base 580 features a four-digit display located behind the speaker grille that shows the current setting for volume, bass/treble, and PhaseCue II (virtual surround). It also shows when you have engaged the Mute, Output Leveling (OL), or Dialog Emphasis (DE) features. A few seconds after you stop using your remote (or front panel) controls, the display disappears completely.

Controls

Dialogue Emphasis (DE): Dialogue Emphasis (DE) provides an easy-to-use and effective method for improving the intelligibility of television dialogue. By pressing the Dialogue Emphasis (DE) function button on the remote control, the system engages a circuit that mimics the functions of a hearing aid. The frequencies used by human voices are dynamically emphasized, while other frequencies are minimized.

Output Leveling (OL): The Output Leveling (OL) function prevents large changes in volume levels. Simply press the Output Leveling (OL) button on the remote control and a sophisticated processor takes over, making soft sounds louder and loud sounds softer, so there are fewer jarring moments when switching channels or when commercials come on. This system also helps by boosting the audio levels from a DVD or Blu Ray player that is not loud enough.

Surround Settings: You can adjust the level of PhaseCue II virtual surround processing effect. You can select from Surround One (low effect), Surround Two (moderate effect), Surround Three (strong effect).

Tone Control: The bass control has a range from -8 to 4. The treble control has a range from -4 to 4.

Remote Control: The included wireless remote has controls for power, mute, volume, PhaseCue II effect level, bass & treble level. and DE/OL functions.

Programmable: The new Z-Base 580 can be programmed to respond to your remote control. The illuminated display walks you through a less-than-a-minute programming cycle. Then your TV remote, cable box remote, or satellite receiver remote can control volume, mute, power and input functions of the ZVOX system.

Auto Standby: The Z-Base 580 will enter a low-power Standby mode after approximately 5 minutes of no audio signal.

Connections

One Cable Connection: The Z-Base 580 requires only one connection cable. You can use either analog or digital connection options to your television.

Audio Inputs: The ZVOX Z-Base 580 offers analog and digital audio inputs.

  • Digital Input: The Z-Base 580 is equipped with a coaxial digital (single RCA) and an optical digital (Toslink) input. The digital inputs will accept either 2-channel PCM or Dolby Digital bitstream signals.
  • Analog Input: The Z-Base 580 has two rear-panel stereo RCA analog inputs and a front-panel 3.5mm analog audio input.

Subwoofer Output: An optional powered subwoofer can be connected using the full-range single RCA Sub Output on the back panel.

Remote Control Input: This jack is reserved for ZVOX service only.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

received the devise in a timely manner. expected a smaller box but adjusted and looks fine with the TV sitting on top. The sound is great and find the speech easy to comprehend with some age related reduced hearing. Tried the Ipod and again was not disappointed.
Pros:
simple setup with no wire issues, better speech comprehension than prior 5.1 setup
Cons:
can't think of any

Perfect Solution

Written By DanW, San Diego, CA on Thursday, May 23, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound bar is a PERFECT solution for a small to mid-size room. The price doesnt offend because in my opinion this is a best in class, product. The higher wattage output for this model is worth it, especially in conjunction with the dialog enhancement. Though I am not an audiophile, I am a huge electric blues/rock fan, and the highs and lows do not disappoint; and the sound is 'punchy' in the middle, filling the room. This model also has an optical, coaxial, and rca inputs, allow for connection of a bunch of devices - worked out of the box with 10 minutes of routing cables on the TV stand from the devices.
Pros:
Sound quality is fantastic, and fills a 20 x 30 living space more than adequately. Ease of setup & use, I love the remote. I have not yet tried to train the unit with the cable or tv remote - having four remotes doesn't bother me, it's actually kind of okay for organization
Cons:
The unit is pretty darn big and heavy, so, make sure you have adequate space on your stand, or wherever you are going to place it. The depth is substantial, and you need room in the back to route in the cables.

EZ way to instantly UPGRADE sound from a Flat Screen

Written By Stevie B., Easton, PA 18042 on Saturday, May 11, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As title states; This unit has full rich sound and the Dialogue-Enhancer really brings voices to life -- Unit has 5 front firing speakers and 2 down firing subs built in, I added an external sub just for added punch, but most shoppers would be completely satisfied with the low range of the built-in subs -- By it, you won't regret it !!! Stevie B.
Pros:
Way EZ to hook-up and use

It is marvelous for me.....and for my wife!! Crutchfield is an outstanding company and we will deal with them again....just like having the helping hand of a friend!!

Great sound, but large footprint

Written By dm, New York, NY on Wednesday, December 05, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX 580 does everything that the critics say in terms of sound. Like others, I was looking for a soundbar for our 46" flatscreen. Like many other city dwellers, our TV is located in our living room, so setting up a surround sound system was really out of the question for a room that is not dedicated to TV watching. I compared the ZVOX with other soundbar solutions but almost without exception the ZVOX came out far ahead in the ratings. What is only hinted at, however, is the size of the box itself. While elegantly designed to not draw attention to itself, it's still pretty huge: 36" wide, 16.5" deep and 5" tall. From my perspective, the sound is worth the tradeoff but it's hard to appreciate how large it is until it's sitting on your credenza.

Great musical quality sound. The theater surround is above average but the center channel voicing is sometimes a bit unreal. Voice volume equalizing is also a problem issue.

Zvox 580

Written By TomD, Loganville, Ga on Thursday, November 29, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been having an increasingly hard time understanding the dialog from my plasma tv.. I came upon this unit while looking for a solution. The setup would have been very easy were it not for my Pioneer 5070HD tv. I set up everything as per instructions and connected the 580 to my Pioneer with an optical out Toslink cable. When I turned everything on -nothing. After talking to a very helpful person at Zvox, we determined that the HDMI on my Pioneer will not pass any digital information from HDMI connected devices through the Toslink cable. Long story short, I had to connect to the Monitor Out using analog rca cables. Somewhat disappointing. But thats Pioneers fault. The 580, even through an analog source, sounds great. I can actually understand the words. I was concerned over the prospect of setting my 50inch tv on top of the Zvox, but everything worked great and it was very stable. This is a great sounding speaker and I cant say enough good things about Zvox customer support. Iwould not hesitate to buy from them and Crutchfield again.

Happy Z580taly

Written By DD, Tx on Thursday, November 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your are looking for a simple powerful set up, the Z 580 is a great choice! I was looking to improve the HDTV sound without having to have speakers and components all over the place. I started with internet searches and reviews of sound bars of all types and price ranges (Ie. Sony , Harmon Kardon, Polk Audio, Bose) to name a few. Then went to listen to each product that suit my specific needs. I had read about a company name ZVOX years ago and kept an eye on their product line because I liked their sound in a box theory. Well ZVOX kept on coming up on several sites as a good choice for a sound bar. I am now glad I waited all these years for the ZVOX 580! Setup and install fast and simple. Just know your sound needs and you will not be disappointed in this product. My wife was not home before I set up the system to my liking and left it like that and went to work. See called me later and to say that the sound was great coming of that black box and made her DVD movie enjoyable! Nufff said, the wife likes it!!

Pros:
Remote syncs easily , connection and set up simple to understand great sound clarity and just enough subwoofer
Cons:
None at this time

Solid Product

Written By Eric M, Batavia, IL on Wednesday, October 24, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with the Zvox 580 that I recently received. Initially I had not heard of this brand, so was a bit skeptical - but after looking online quite a bit for reviews (by both customers and independent websites), I gained quite a bit of confidence in them, and made the purchase.

The fact that Crutchfield has an excellent return/refund policy only made the decision easier to try it out. I did go to a local store to listen to it first, but it's hard to make a decision based on that even, since essentially you have to be happy with how it sounds in YOUR setup, not in a professional one at a store. That's how Crutchfield's policy really gave me peace of mind.

The 580 is very sturdy, heavy, and solidly built. I like the fact that the connections are simplified on it (just run audio from your TV and you're done). As with any product that offers multiple sound settings, you'll have to fuss with it until you''ve got the setting you like, based on what you're watching (movie vs. TV vs. sports). But that's normal.

I have used mine to watch several movies, and was very happy with the sound quality. It's not going to replace a "true" surround sound system, but even Zvox admits that. The point of it is to get something better than the TV speakers, deliver solid, immersive sound, but not have to deal with a full surround setup. It does that well.

It does what it's designed for quite well!
Pros:
Solid sound, makes movies and TV much more enjoyable than TV speakers
Cons:
If I was picky I'd say "cost", but you actually get quite a bit for your money, considering you don't need a receiver/amp to power it! I think the price is fair for what you get.

ZVOX 580 Model

Written By Bob M, Fairfax Station, VA on Saturday, October 20, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I took the plunge after reading all the reviews on the ZVOX Model 580 and I'm glad I finally bought this model. The Bass is Excellent! And, the overall sound of the unit is clear as a bell. My wife likes the fact that we don't have a bunch of wires strung out all over the room. We like the one box system alot! It's kind of unbelieveable how good this little small box sounds!! I'm an audiophile and I am generally real picky about which equipment I buy. I paired this 580 with a new 70" Sharp LED, 3D TV and it is just phenomenal how I finally feel like I'm watching a real movie with real movie sound!! It's really worth it (I think) to buy the best system ZVOX offers, so you won't get short changed on your bass. So, good ahead and spend the extra $100 and be done with it for the next 10 years!
Pros:
Easy set up clear instructions Great Bass! Good stereo separation Good surround sound qualities
Cons:
No cons that I can see.

Excellent choice ... for what it is

Written By WilliamH, Atlanta, GA on Tuesday, October 16, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The ZVOX-Base 580 is an excellent choice for what it is -- a single unit, all-in-one speaker system which richly replaces the anemic sound of the speakers on my wall-mounted LG 55" HD 3D TV. I purchased it for use in my modestly sized master bedroom, choosing it over the smaller ZVOX systems so as to have a richer sound at low volume. The bass volume range is more than adequate given the facts I have neighbors adjacent to my condo and my wife prefers less bass over more. Over the years I have purchased many A/V items from Crutchfield and have always appreciated the quality of the items and the excellent support service provided both before and after purchases. The purchase process and quality of this product is very much in line with my previous happy experiences with Crutchfield.
Pros:
Very helpful pre-purchase consultation with sales associate, quick delivery after placing order, very easy installation, superb sound, broad variety of sound-setting options.

Zvox-Z Base 580

Written By Bob B, La Mesa, CA on Monday, October 15, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This excellent product installs just as the ad says...simple and done in 5 minutes without hi-tech knowledge. It is controlled by your TV remote and turns on and off automatically. A separate remote is supplied to change the type of sound you desire...concert hall, stadium, movie, etc. I just set it at the best sound for the room and put the separate remote away. Wife loves the simplicity which is why I purchased it. Other electronic retailers never heard of it and that is their loss. Finall, a audio/video component that does not require the Geek Squad to intergrate.

Disappointed

Written By NW, North Central, Florida on Friday, September 21, 2012

First the speaker tries to copy Dolby Digital and they do not. The speaker spreads the sound from center and all I wanted was speakers that sounded more natural than the TV speakers, not a Dolby speaker system for I already have a 7 speakers and AV receiver system for true Dolby or DTS. This speaker has un-natural hissy highs and little bass. I wanted this speaker system to reproduce natural sounding voice which my TV does not accomplish and neither does this speaker.
Pros:
Playing music over the speaker is pleasing.
Cons:
Over priced, less than average voice reproduction speaker system.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an amazing surround system (but never had backround speakers). This sounds pretty incredible for it's size. The bass was ok, but was awesome after using my existing powered subwoofer using a 55hz crossover setting. It really sounds great but rear speakers would make it sound a lot more like surround sound. (but the sound quality is excellent). The wife loves the fact that she dosent have to look at speakers.
Pros:
Sound quality

Very Good

Written By MG, Sacramento, CA on Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Yes like most of us who are in a market for a sound bar we've probably demoed and listen to many different brands before making a final decision. I must say bang for the buck the Z-Base 580 is an awesome product. I listened to sound bars ranging from $300 to $2000 and the 580 is an outstanding value. Yes the sound bars in the $1500 to $2000 range have awesome separation, brightness, clarity, and DSP enhanced or simulated 5.1 surround sound, but the 580 is very good too in those sound qualities as well at 1/3rd the price. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 star rating was the ability to give it more bass for those who like a bass type EQ, but I called ZVOX and they have a firmware revision called "REV-27" that improves this issue for some purchasers. I am listener who doesn't like a lot of bass and so far the 580 has enough bass for my ears. One last thing when I called their customer service number the person was very helpful and told me up front all the details of this product. Can't ask for more than that...
Pros:
Great Value... Very Good Sound... Some nice basic sound adjustments that not overly complicated...
Cons:
A little more bass control for people who love a thump-in bass sound.
