Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Our take on the Alpine CDE-134HD

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Ride with HD Radio™

Alpine designed the CDE-134HD CD receiver for all you AM/FM radio lovers. Its built-in HD Radio tuner lets you dial in digital HD Radio broadcasts to get FM that sounds almost as good as a CD, and AM that sounds like traditional FM — a huge leap forward in sound quality. Plus HD Radio stations can take advantage of multicasting, which lets them broadcast multiple channels on the same frequency — giving you more listening options.

Alpine CDE-134HD

Great for your iPod® and iPhone®

Plug in your player to the front-panel USB input, and you can use the CDE-134HD's controls to navigate your iPod's music library. The person riding shotgun will love Passenger Control Mode, which lets them play DJ while you focus on driving. While your iPod's connected and you've got an HD Radio broadcast tuned in, you can "tag" songs you hear for later purchasing from the iTunes® store.

Awesome sound quality

And as always, you can count on Alpine to deliver great sound quality. You can adjust your sound to taste with one of the ten equalizer presets or by using the 3-band parametric EQ. Into power? This receiver works with Alpine's KTP-445A Power Pack, a plug-in amplifier that sends 45 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers.

iPod note:
If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility.

HD Radio lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to HDRadio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Alpine CDE-134HD.

Multicasting: Multicasting is the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single AM/FM frequency. this increases the amount and diversity of content choices. A maximum of eight multicast station channels (HD1-HD8) can be selected on this unit.

iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs.

Note: Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.

Note: Sub-program services of multicast stations are not included in the automatic memory search.

Seek Mode: You can search for only digital AM/FM stations (Digital mode), or both analog & digital AM/FM stations (Hybrid mode).

Listening Modes: The head unit provides four reception methods in order to receive Digital & Analog AM/FM signals according to your own preference and signal strength.

      • Hybrid: Receives both digital and analog stations. If the digital signal is weak, this mode will switch to receive the analog radio signal automatically.
      • Digital: Receives only digital radio signals, even when the digital signal is weak.
      • Digital MC: Receives the digital radio signal while listening to a sub-program service of a multicast station.
      • Analog: Only receives the analog radio signal, even when the digital signal is strong.

Live Mode: While receiving a live AM/FM broadcast, you can select an optimized receiving method according to your own preference and the signal strength.

      • Analog: While receiving a live broadcast, this unit will only receive the analog radio signal even when the digital signal can be received.
      • Digital: While receiving a live broadcast, this unit will keep receiving the digital radio signal even when the digital signal is week.
      • Listen: While receiving a live broadcast, this unit will use one of the Listening Modes (Hybrid, Digital, Digital MC, or Analog).

FM Tone Quality: You can set your preferred tonal quality, when listening to FM analog radio stations. You can choose between HiFi (high-quality sound), Normal (standard setting), or Stable (noise control).

      Alpine CDE-134HD Nice Upgrade

Written By daveAKAbluewater, Tyngsboro, MA on Friday, May 10, 2013
Installed in a 2005 Honda Pilot
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My original stock CD radio in my 2005 Honda Pilot was always weak and after 8 years most CDs would skip and no MP3 jack it was time to replace. The Alpine unit offered HD radio and decent reviews and 4-18 watt channels to power my four speakers. The unit is really nice and solid in performance, look and feel. The sound with stock speakers was a real significant upgrade. I can't believe I waited this long. The connector supplied made the install very easy too. Figuring out how to get the old unit out was tricky. Thanks to some YouTube videos I was able to get the dash apart without breaking anything! I liked the sound so much that I installed new speakers (from Crutchfield) and now this system really rocks!
      Pros:
Solid unit, good clean power, HD radio, price

Great radio for the price that includes HD

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After needing a radio to replace my factory stereo that was going out, and trying products from other companies, I wanted to see what Alpine would offer. I bought this radio mainly due to Alpine's reputation and the fact that it offered HD radio which I was introduced to from friends as some radio companies now use hd stations to broadcast to smaller translators in the city which I can't hear being in the country. The system is awesome in that the loudest I want to listen still leaves more room to turn it up, as my last stereo, full volume still left me wanting more. The cd player and usb has helped me rediscover some nuances in the songs I didn't realize was there with the line in being used almost daily, Biggest issues I have found in my opinion has been having to use seek to find the HD stations as I had put the radio in manual tune and was unable to access a known local hd2 signal, another is the lack of presets as most aftermarket stereos are already at 18 fm presets and with the new hd signals could have easily filled it up. third is lack of rds except for hd signals which to me should have been a easy given, but for the lack on creature comforts for the tuner, the radio is a great purchase and would easily do it again
      Pros:
      great receiver and audio processing
      Cons:
lack of a owners manual book or at least how to set clock in quick guide lack of access of hd stations when in manual mode needs more presets

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great features like HD radio, USB and auxilliary ports, and a CD player. However, its the intuitive use, great sound, and smart available configurations that make this stereo a resounding success. The compact size allowed the use of a secondary tray...perfect for stashing my IPod while it is hooked up to the USB port. While this unit lacks more advanced features like bluetooth, it is excellent for replacing your "garden-variety" factory radio. Highly recommended...
      Pros:
Clever configurations, intuitive controls, great features, improved fidelity.
      Cons:
Volume knob comes off easily if pulled (not an issue in normal use).

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all I have never reviewed a product in my life. Second this is the perfect deck if you want a good radio with no bells and whistles. I love this thing, it has everything that I needed and nothing I didn't want. HD Radio is pretty cool even though there aren't many channels available in my area. It was very easy to setup, no manual required if you have a basic knowledge of electronics. I love that it has tagging for hd stations but am only disappointed it does not have RDS, but I already knew that going into it, although Alpine should have included it. It does have a sub pre amp included, something I did not notice in the pictures but found out digging through Alpine's website. Crutchfield has amazing customer service, they answered all my questions and concerns before purchase. Thank you to whoever I talked to, I can't remember his name. :( The sound is really great for the price. Highly recommend if you are looking for a great deck for little money. This was installed in a 99 S10 with minor modification and awesome instructions from Crutchfield. Top notch all the way around. The rest is polk momo 4x6 in the dash, db 651 in the door. Not installed is the 10" pioneer shallow mount sub and pioneer 300w rms amp yet. So far sounds amazing, far superior than factory. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner!! For the price you can't beat it!! 4 1/2 stars for me
      Pros:
HD Radio USB Connection Aux in (the main reason i bought it) Sub pre amp Its blue and only blue, my favorite color! Has a volume knob instead of buttons!
      Cons:
No RDS :( No sat connection (not that I needed it but would have been nice if it was included) Only minor things would have made this the perfect 10 to me. Would have been nice to have a little bit more control over the EQ but it does suit my needs well enough! Again much more than factory.

Replaced 2002 wrx OEM radio with alpine 134hd. Difference is amazing.sound quality much better, and the extra HD stations, USB and auxillary plugs for my iPod and mp3 player were the icing on the cake. The directions as well as technical help from crutchield were spot on, and everything fit perfectly. Could not be happier with this purchase.

On all counts, the unit itself, the installation kit, the professionalism of the Crutchfield employee and the timeliness of the shipment could not have provided a more satisfying buying experience. This unit fits like a glove. Incidentally, I installed it in a 2003 Ford F 250 King Ranch. Lastly, the price of this unit, free shipping and no sales tax makes this an offer that truly cannot be beat or refused.

One heck of a nice unit!

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We selected this head unit over all the others in the Crutchfield lineup because it had HD radio and would play MP3's off a thumb drive and had lots of additional features to boot. Having just bought a 2011 Ford Ranger with a simple AM/FM setup with factory speakers, the Ford sound was not going to cut it on the long trips we take. We had an audio shop in Hopkinsville install this Alpine and it took Fred all of 20 minutes. Later we added some Pioneer TS-D6802R speakers and whoa! This system sounds GOOD! Nice bass, beautiful mid range and crystal clear treble. Alpine delivers. When listening to HD radio, we sometime think the thumb drive is on. We are thrilled with our purchase.
      Pros:
Cost was reasonable, quick to install and great sound from a well known and highly regarded audio company.
      Cons:
Can't think of a single one!

I've had Alpine products in the past and they have always been great. This unit is no exception!! Sound quality is great and it's easy to use. I'm not a very technical person and this is easy for me to use. The HD radio sounds great, my XM works just fine thought the AUX connection, and the ipod my wife got me plays though the USB without any kind of set up needed. Overall it's just what I need, and nothing I don't!!

Great entry level radio. High Definition gives access to more station choices. The extra inputs including USB make this flexible radio a deal for the price. Installation was painless and quick.
      Pros:
      - Great sound quality. - Different Radio Search capabilities. - Display of CD Track information. - Different Display Choices. - Detachable Cover.
      Cons:
      - Unable to mute radio. - When ejecting a CD in CD mode, it doesn't automatically revert to Radio, you have to change back manually.

I bought this product to go into a soft top Jeep. I wanted to keep the cost down due to ease of theft. I was very surprised with the sound quality...very crisp and clear. Ample power to power the speakers to cover the road noise. I recommend this to anyone looking for a low-cost/high-quality system!
      Pros:
Ease of installation primarly due to the harness and mounting plate supplied by Crutchfield.
