Klipsch

Our take on the Klipsch R-1800-C

by Marshall Chase

Get great sound throughout your home without sacrificing an inch of floor space. The Klipsch® R-1800-C sports an 8" polypropylene woofer for impressive mids and bass, plus a 1" dome tweeter for smooth highs. Use them as surround sound speakers in an all-Klipsch home theater, or install them in pairs for stereo listening with your multi-room audio system. You can paint the grille to blend seamlessly into any room's décor.

An optional in-ceiling bracket is recommended for installing the R-1800-C in new construction.

      Features

Two-Way Design: The Klipsch R-1800-C in-ceiling speaker employs a 8" polymer-cone woofer and a large motor structure for high sensitivity. A coaxially mounted 1" polymer-dome tweeter distributes smooth, clear highs over a wide area. The Klipsch R-1800-C in-ceiling speaker brings dynamic acoustic performance to both home and commercial environments.

Basket/Frame: The R-1800-C has a sturdy ABS basket and frame. The frame can be painted to match any decor (a clear paint mask is supplied to protect the drivers from overspray). The aluminum mesh grille is also paintable.

Spring-Clip Terminals: The Klipsch R-1800-C in-ceiling speaker features two spring-clip terminals which will accept either bare speaker wire or pin-connectors. The spring-clip speaker terminals are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Power Specifications Note: The manufacturer has specified the maximum power handling of this speaker as 40 watts RMS (160 W Peak). Klipsch has also published a recommended amplifier power specification as 80 watts. For the purpose of matching the speaker with the best amplifier, Crutchfield is listing the power specification as 80 watts.

      Mounting Options

Installation: The speaker can be installed in new or existing construction. It requires a cutout diameter of 9.8125" and a mounting depth of 4.3125". For new construction, purchase of the IK-800-C installation kit (714IK800C, sold separately)  is highly recommended. For existing construction, the speaker should be installed in drywall at least 3/8" thick. It can also be installed in a drop ceiling (2' x 2' or 2' x 4' ceiling tiles only). In both cases, to maximize the acoustic performance of the in-ceiling speakers, Klipsch recommends you replace the original mounting panel with 1/2" or 3/4" plywood or MDF. A cardboard template is included to assist you in making the cutout.

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wife and I recently moved into a home where the previous owner left with his 8in in-ceiling speakers. Anyways, after a few months of building our system (TV, AV, etc) it was time to fill in the holes. Since we were on a budget we were extremely price sensitive however, the last thing I wanted was a speaker that I had to paint white to match the drywall and I couldn't stand anything with a label showing (which to me makes the speakers look cheap and causes an eyesore on the ceilings). So we went with the Klipsch R-1800-C for these reasons as well as being able to order 5 of them which is an odd quantity. Pound-for-pound these babies blast however you're not getting any rattling or distortion between movies/commercials. Crystal clear sound quality controlled in our house by a Sony Bravia enhanced system (which I suggest). The only down side was during installation when trying to screw the studs tight. Since I did these by hand at first they seemed a little tight and I was concerned they would damage the drywall however once they got going it was clear they were tight to be as secure as possible to the ceiling. In this case, I suggest using a drill. Other than that I am extremely happy.
      Pros:
The best speakers pound for pound for the price. Nice even color that matches normal drywall and you don't have to spot the label each time you look at the speakers as they blend into the drywall.
      Cons:
Screws were a little tight which makes you concerned about punching through the drywall. A very minor issue.
