Our take on the Audiovox CMOS2

by Ken Nail

Audiovox's CMOS2 rear-view camera adds safety and convenience to your vehicle. And with five different mounting options and included hardware, you're sure to find a good spot for installing your camera.

Connect the CMOS2 to your in-dash monitor, and you automatically see what's behind your car or truck when you shift into reverse. The 170-degree wide-angle view gives you a great view of potential trouble spots. The camera comes with a 7-foot cable, so you'll need a composite video cable to route through your vehicle to your in-dash monitor. Warranty: 1 year.

    very dim at night

Written By Tim, Bay Area, California on Wednesday, February 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Camera is very dim at night. I have a cheaper model on my truck & the picture looks much better. Also, be sure to notice that it does not come with a cable. A cable will set you back $-$$.
    Pros:
Comes with a bunch of differnt mounting brackets so it gives you a lot of options for mounting
    Cons:
Camera is very dim at night, & any lights wash things out. You need to supply your own cable with this and "thin" video cables for backup cameras are hard to find. I settled for a thicker higher quality cable but routing was more dificult.

Better suited to replace unit that was previously installed

Written By Dave E, DFW Texas on Tuesday, January 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are replacing a previously installed unit then this would be fine. If you are doing an original instal then recommend you buy the Audiovox unit with license plate mount that includes male to male cable. Does not include the male to male adapter cable to run into back of head unit--difficult to install.
    Pros:
    Cheap
    Cons:
Does not have all materials for original install, no male cable to connect to head unit, requires drilling to mount (Other Audiovox unit does not).

I just installed this camera on a suburban and it works well. Installed it through a Kenwood DDX 419 and picture looks good with the exception of a small portion of the top left corner that is blacked out. I'm not sure if it is my camera or HU. Overall, it meets my needs.
    Pros:
    picture looks good
    Cons:
top left corner of my screen is blacked out

Installed in a 2005 Chevy Avalanche: Fit perfectly in the rear gate bezel
    Pros:
Excellent image Small Good Daytime quality Good install options
    Cons:
Could have a wider field of view, but is ok Short cables, you will need to purchase your own video cable to install Night quality is not that great, however it works fine and I wood rather have the better daytime quality and no wash-out in the sun tthan perfect nightime. have to comprimise should have alignment marks

    Needs better cabling

Written By trb, Woonsocket, RI on Tuesday, April 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I had this working (for about 10 minutes) the video feed was crisp and gave a great rear view when mounted to my 2008 Toyota Tundra's rear bumper. Unfortunately the power cables are way too thin of a gauge (22g) for a 12 volt application. They should be at least 18g and probably 16g. I am trying to splice it into my factory trailer hitch wiring and the wires keep on breaking. At this point it is not worth returning it, so I will probably try opening it up and see if I can solder in some thicker gauge wires and see if that fixes my problems.
    Pros:
    Great image, nice wide angle.
    Cons:
Wiring not appropriate for a 12 volt automotive application.

    Works better than expected

Written By Wheels55, Plano, TX on Monday, January 30, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Using this with a Clarion NZ501. Mounted it in the rear bumper. Works far better than I expected it to. Looks close to HD video, far better video and viewing angle than I have seen in some factory vehicles.
    Pros:
Simple design, great day/night video, plenty of mounting options.
    Cons:
    none.

    Great Camera!

Written By Joe, Sparta, NJ on Thursday, November 17, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mounted this camera on my 2011 Chevy Silverado HD with a JVC Navigator. With all the mounting options I figure it wouldn't be hard to put it in the factory location. Went to the dealer and for 30 bucks got the factory bezel. With a little carving and an over-sized O-ring to fit a round peg in a square hole. The truck looks like it came with it. Now I feel much more confident backing up. I highly recommend this camera!
    Pros:
Great picture. Ten times better then my wife's stock camera. Mounting system extremely versatile.

Peek a boo.. I see you.

Written By Anonymous, Lincoln NE on Monday, June 06, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The camera gives good images. It's a little hard to get leveled and the locking nut could be a little larger (more thread and larger in diameter) or an additional nut could be added to the kit. Be careful where you mount it. On an F350 the hole that exists in the bumper may look tempting... until you want to lower your spare tire... doah! Do yourself a favor and either mount it away from the lic. plate light or remove one of the bulbs. It doesn't do well with a light shining right at it.

    Cool Camera!

Written By George, Colorado on Sunday, February 13, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this camera in the drivers side of the tail gate latch of a 2007 F150 Crew cab. I
already had a factory back-up obstruction detection system but wanted more. Frankly I
needed to see better backing out of parking spaces and this camera does a great job in
daylight and dark. It has enough of a wide angle that it help you see other cars
aproaching. Installation is pretty easy although the instructons aren't the greatest. I
installed this with a Kenwood DNX-5160 player which has an option to turn the camera
on when you shift in to reverse and a button that turns the camera on. So here is where I
might save somebody a few head aches. If you just want the camera to work when you
shift in to reverse then wire it like the instructions say by wiring the camera power to the
back-up lights PLUS you will need to run a wire from the back-up lights to the sensor
wire on your Audio/video receiver if it has one. Now if you want to use the camera when
you are NOT in reverse then you need to run a power lead from an ignition switched
source to the camera's power lead. One beef I have is that the top of the camera isn't
marked and aligning the camera is more of a pain than you might guess. It is marketed
by a good company so it should last awhile. Bottom line is it made backing up in a large
truck a whole lot easier and safer.

    Great Camera

Written By TMF, Ohio on Monday, November 01, 2010

Very easy installation. Nice wide view and very clear. Makes backup much easier. I think
it looks better than my 2007 Tahoe built in camera system. I hooked this up to a Pioneer
    Radio.
