Our take on the FM Direct Adapter

by Matt Holliday

This FM direct adapter lets you send the signal from your Dock & Play satellite radio directly to your vehicle's stereo. The direct connection eliminates the static and interference that can occur when using a wireless FM transmitter.

You won't have to find an unused station or switch between stations when traveling to different areas. Just tune to your favorite SIRIUS or XM channel, and enjoy excellent sound quality.

Installation of the FM direct adapter requires removal of your factory or aftermarket stereo. Then simply plug your factory radio antenna into the adapter and plug the adapter into the antenna plug on the rear of your stereo. Then plug the 2.5mm miniplug connector to the FM Out on your Dock & Play radio's car kit.

Please call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 or enter your vehicle information to see if any antenna adapters or tools are needed to install this FM modulator.

Highlights:

  • FM direct connection adapter for select Dock & Play satellite radios
  • connects to FM output of your satellite radio
  • plugs directly into the rear of your factory or aftermarket stereo
  • includes plugs and wires for most installations (antenna adapters may be required)
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

    Features

Overview: The FM Direct Adapter is a hardwired FM adapter that allows you to feed the signal from the FM output jack on your satellite radio receiver into your car radio via the antenna connection, eliminating the outside static and interference you sometimes experience when using a wireless FM modulator. You also get to keep your local AM and FM stations when your device radio is turned off.

Note: This FM Direct Adapter is not a stand-alone FM modulator and cannot connect to the headphone or audio output of other external audio sources; it must connect to the 2.5mm FM output on a compatible satellite radio receiver.

Connections: The FM adapter box features the following connections:

    • To Radio: Male Motorola antenna plug on a 18" cable, plugs into the vehicle's AM/FM radio antenna input
    • To FM Antenna: Female Motorola jack on the side of the switch box, accepts the vehicle's antenna cable
    • Antenna: Male 2.5mm mini-jack on a 21' cable, plugs into the FM Out modulated output on the car kit

    Dimensions of FM adapter box: Height = 1.25", Width = 1.875", Depth = 1.8125"

Installation: The FM adapter box is typically mounted behind the dash, near the radio. In this case it's likely that no antenna extension cable will be needed.

Antenna Adapters: Some vehicles (such as select GM vehicles, Volkswagens, Nissans, etc.) may require antenna adapters in order to connect the FM adapter Box to your vehicle's OEM antenna connectors. Please consult the Outfit My Car section of the Crutchfield website to see if OEM antenna adapters are needed.

    works ok

Written By Marc, Charlottesville VA on Saturday, April 20, 2013

This works OK except that I have to turn off my Sirius to get it to work.
    Pros:
    Works
    Cons:
I decided not to use it and just plugged my Sirius directly into an input jack. If you have this available this is a much superior solution.

Bought this product before and it worked. Newly designed and smaller makes it sound like its a direct connection. There is no static and you don't have to search for a clear station. A+++
    Pros:
    Price,easy to install
    Cons:
Wish that it had a input to use for other electronics. Other then that there are none.

    FM direct adapter

Written By outcast, Colorado on Friday, June 01, 2012
Installed in a 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Least expensive way to get good sound quality for Sirius Radio. On my 2004 Monte Carlo the install was a breeze, Took 4 minutes at most. Reached up under dash, felt for antenna cable and unplugged it. Then inserted the adapter cable the rest was hooked up. Tucked the extra cables and the box under the console. You do not have to remove the radio! On my 2003 Trail Bazer, you do have to remove the radio. This is done by removing the dash trim panel. The instructions from Crutchfield are fairly good. Also keep track of what screws came from where they came from, there are several different lengths. Take your time and watch for wires you have to unplug to give yourself room to slide the radio out far enough to get to the antenna. If you take the time to fill in your cars info, Crutchfield will send the instuctions and adapter cables you need. Very happy with the system and with Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Improves sound quality over the FM broadcast system, no need for the FM extender antenna.
    Cons:
If you have to remove the radio to install, takes longer.

    Works okay but....

Written By JL, Connecticut on Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Installed in a 2000 Ford Taurus SES
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew this was what I needed, but going into it I had no idea what was involved. Having taken the time to read as much as I could online, I felt comfortable enough to attempt it rather than pay an installer $250 to put it in for me. The Crutchfield support however was not what I had hoped for. They tout they have all the specs you need and will send you the specific install instructions, yet neither the salesperson I spoke with online, nor the instructions I received, provided any clue how the components were to be hooked up for my vehicle. I spent hours figuring out what went where and installing it, only to discover they did not supply me with an antenna cable that I needed, which pushed my install back to the following weekend. I thought Crutchfield would provide with some type of wiring plan of what part goes where, but not only did that not happen, but then they did not even provide me the parts I needed. The aggravation involved was significant. A simple chart showing how to hook up, for my car, the parts they sent me would have gone a long way, but that was not provded.
    Pros:
Provided a way to get a decent connection from my FM radio to my Sirius Sportster.
    Cons:
Install was a pain (see above), and noise feedback. For some reason, if you have your FM radio on a station other than the frequency it uses for your Sirius radio, you get a lot of static. This means to use your FM radio as you normally would, you must first turn off your Sirius radio. It would have been nice to go from a Sirius station directly to another FM station directly, without having to power my Sirius Sportster radio off first everytime.

This was definitley worth the money! I used this on my girlfriend's factory radio because she didn't want me to "Mess with her car", so a whole radio swap was out of the question. It hooks up to the factory radio antena jack on factory radio's and give you a direct fm connection which is pretty good, way better than wireless fm transmitter. Worth the extra time to hook up.

Adapter works great. In the NY area, there are very little blank radio stations to
choose from. The adapter cuts out the car antenna and eliminates all static. Very
    happy

Fantastic product that works just as advertised. Easy to install and requires
NO external power. Have used my Sirius radio both locally and long distance
with no interference. So much better than wireless FM modulators. Saved me the
cost of replacing my factory receiver to get media connections. I did not need
adapters (Subaru Outback). Check with Crutchfield when ordering.

This device is simply amazing. The radio signal is crystal clear, now! It is
worth every penny to directly hook your satellite radio into your vehicle radio
through this device. It works like a dream, and it was very easy to install.
Crutchfield delivered it extremely fast, as well.

    you need this part

Written By BillW, Houston, TX on Sunday, January 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When installing an "add-on" type satellite receiver in you auto, this is the only way to go
for a proper connection. This part should replace the other modulation connection parts
and pieces and be included with the receiver kit.
My only complaint is: the part should have a 90 degree male connector that plugs into
the radio. In my F150, I was unable to push the radio back into the dash due to the plug
sticking straight out and hitting the defroster duct behind the radio. I had to modify the
stress reliever on the plug to get it to bend enough - this should not have been
    necessary.

    Works Great!

Written By Joe S, Mercer, WI on Thursday, November 04, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have a Siruis radio and are using a wireless connection to your FM radio this
product is a MUST. It works GREAT! No more fuzzy connections or constantly switching
stations to get better reception. Plus the folks at Crutchfield were a great help. When
ordering I came to a point where it said I also needed adapters. It was showing 3. So I
didn't know if needed just to pick 1 or all. I called the Crutchfield team and they helped
me out. It turned out I needed 2 of the 3 adapters. Installing it in my Cavalier was fairly
easy. It just took some time. To get to my radio I needed to take the dashboard off. But
Crutchfield supplied specific instructions for my car, with pictures, how to remove the
dashboard. Everything went smoothly and its installed and as I said works GREAT.
Many Thanks to the Crutchfield Team for outstanding service & support!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an awesome addition to your XM|Sirius radio. If you are using the built in transmitter
to broadcast to your car radio, you should get this. If your in your local area and have your in
car radio set to the same channel as your XM|Sirius radio, it may work well. When you start
to travel and FM stations change, you then have to alter the settings on both radios. This
device eliminates the need to change stations and keeps the XM|Sirius radio strong with no
static from your car antenna trying to compete with the FM transmitter in the XM|Sirius radio.

I purchased this prior to a trip to Florida. The order arrived very fast as usual and I installed it in about 30 minutes with help from the Crutchfield guide. Once everything was connected I turned on the radio and Wow! I could not believe the clarity of the sound.
Needless to say I drove from Buffalo NY to Port Canaveral Florida and back and never once experienced any static or had to change the radio station.
Excellent product! * Make sure your receiver is compatible*.
    I have an XMp3i.

Spoke with tech support at Sirius two times and they said that with a 2.5mm (female) to 3.5mm (male) adapter that this item would work with any audio player. Should have tried to speak to a Crutchfield rep. to verify. This product did not work for my XM unit or IPod. I guess it does only work for the stated Sirius satellite players.

If you can hook up a VCR (or should I say BD player these days?), you can install this adapter. Easy, straight forward. The only way to get better sound quality would be an AUX input. But compared to wireless FM, it's TONS better. Recommended.
