NAD

Our take on the NAD C 165BEE

by Dave Bar

The NAD C 165BEE offers many of the performance advantages of far costlier stereo preamplifiers — detail resolution, bass control, and extension — for a price that won't break the bank. Its premium-grade circuitry and sturdy construction deliver realistic, lifelike sound that puts the musicians right in your room. This preamp also includes a versatile phono stage so you can enjoy your music collection on vinyl, and a top-notch headphone amplifier for high-quality private listening. Match it up with NAD's potent C 275BEE power amp and a high-performance NAD CD player to create a beautiful-sounding stereo system.

Advanced design and top-notch construction for better sound
Thoughtful engineering and high-quality construction are hallmarks of NAD audio components. The C 165BEE's sophisticated circuit design uses the shortest, cleanest signal paths possible for noise-free operation. This also helps preserve the lowest-levels of musical detail for sound that remains remarkably pure and transparent. A heavy-gauge steel chassis adds to the C 165BEE's durability and vibration resistance. NAD even employed an interference-canceling toroidal transformer in the preamp's power supply for punchy, dynamic performance.

Connections and convenience
This preamp offers enough inputs to connect seven audio components, including your turntable. Two preamp outputs let you use the C 165BEE to drive two independent power amplifiers. A mono subwoofer output makes it easy add a powered sub. And the included remote gives you easy control of the preamp, and the other NAD audio components in your system.

Highlights:

  • 6 line-level RCA inputs, including 1 tape monitor loop
  • phono input with selectable moving magnet or moving coil settings
  • 2 line-level RCA preamp outputs, including one variable output
  • 1 line-level RCA subwoofer preamp output (for connecting a powered sub)

    Disappointing sound

Written By Nick, Santa Cruz on Wednesday, April 03, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit to replace my Adcom 565 from the early 90s. I love the 565, but wanted something with remote control. This unit looked to be a perfect replacement and even looked like my old Adcom! When I saw an open box available, I jumped on it.

Once I received it and cracked the wrapper, I was immediately impressed. The look and feel, heft, and overall build quality are great, and it looked great in my rack. This could be the one! But then I turned it on, popped in my listening test disc, and was immediately disappointed. I don't know if the unit was faulty (it was an open box after all), but the sound was lean and wiry, with weak bass. There was no body to strings, no palpability to the instruments. I was always aware that I was listening to electronics and not music. Anyway, I have since returned it and settled on a Parasound instead, which to my ears is far superior (and cheaper to boot), not to mention that it has HT pass-through and bass management capability. I also test drove an Emotiva, which was also far superior to the NAD (and even cheaper), although not quite as good as the Parasound.

Sorry, NAD. I wanted to love you, but you just didn't measure up in listening tests. I'm almost hoping it was defective, because NAD is a good company. But even if I got a bad one, at the price, I think there's better value out there in preamps from Parasound and Emotiva. Even the Emotiva with balanced outputs is less $.
    Pros:
    Build quality, look and feel
    Cons:
Lean, wiry sound, weak bass, no crossover or home theater bypass, high cost

NAD C 165BEE remarkable sound quality

Written By Marcos, Tampa, FL on Saturday, February 02, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the NAD C 165BEE from the open box sale and let me tell you this preamp came like it was never open. not a single scratch or issues. Now with on with the good stuff, I have been searching for the perfect hi-fi system that a normal person can get and afford. I went the route of buying vintage equipment from Ebay with disappointing results (vintage requires service to get them back to former glory, expensive quest) . When I saw the good price of t he NAD C 165BEE I made the decision and purchased one, I have it connected to a fully restored Pioneer Spec 4 power amplifier and the sound it'd beyond anything I have listened before. The sound coming even when you plug a good pair of headphones is remarkable. Simple pure hi-fi sound, I am not a rich person that can afford equipment that costs thousands of dollars and I have a hard time believing that your ears can hear a music with higher quality than this. Sound separation is just amazing, my cds sound like live concerts, the Ipod sounds like cd quality. I even use it to hear music with my Grado SR 125 headphones and boy the sound is just magnificent. If you are looking for a fantastic preamplifier do not look any further, I am sure that are many high dollar preamplifiers out there but this is the one for me. I finally found my perfect setup Hope this review helps you
    Pros:
Sound quality, build quality, looks fantastic
    Cons:
This is perfection and does not need anything else

Replacing a 40-year old integrated amplifier

Written By Fred S, Murfreesboro TN on Thursday, January 17, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the NAD C165BEE stereo pre-amplifier to use in a high fidelity stereo music system. I play mostly classical music CDs and an occasional cassette tape. Sometimes I route the audio from a DVD player through the audio system when I think the sound track warrants the enhanced fidelity and power amplification. The other components in the system include an Acurus A200 power amplifier (200 wrms/ch into 8 ohms), a NAD T 531 CD/DVD player, and Klipsch Forte speakers. So generally speaking, this is not a "high-end" system. The new pre-amp replaced a 40-year old integrated amplifier, in which I was using only the pre-amp section. That older device had begun deteriorating markedly in terms of mechanical operation and sound quality, but served me well for a long time. I have been using the new NAD pre-amp for about two weeks.

So far, I am delighted with the NAD C165BEE pre-amp. It has significantly improved the sound quality of my system. The operation of the pre-amp is impeccable, as is the feel of the controls. The presence of a tone-defeat switch is clear evidence of NAD's attention to fidelity. I definitely recommend this pre-amp.

I have noticed that the pre-amp gets warmer after a few hours of operation than I would have expected -- as warm or warmer than the power amp.

I have given the pre-amp a five-star rating relative to the admittedly narrow range of equipment that I am familiar with and can afford. Accordingly, I can only wonder what a pre-amp costing of order $10^4 or even $10^5 could offer that this one does not. Would including such high-end units in the comparison cost the NAD even 1/2 a star?
    Pros:
Clean sound, beautiful control feel, convenient rear-panel power outlets (120 V model), tone control defeat switch, well designed front-panel status lights, plenty of source input options, phone jack with volume control that auto-defeats pre-amp out signal
    Cons:
None that I have observed in two weeks.

    Exactly what I needed!

Written By Smarks, Near Boston, MA on Thursday, May 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a replacement for an aged Adcom GTP 450 that went on the blink. This plugged into my configuration easily--feeding my phono (yes, we have a stack of treasured vinyl), CD player and iTunes media player inputs to the still decent Adcom power amp that I did not want to replace, producing a clean, clear, and very detailed sound on my pair of venerable old KEF 104/2 speakers. I couldn't be happier with the unit.

But the icing on the cake is Crutchfield's service. I placed the order on a Tuesday afternoon, received an email that it had shipped two hours later, and had the unit in hand by Thursday early afternoon! Then I got an email saying that it had been delivered (which is very helpful for figuring out what has happened if something accidentally gets delivered to the wrong place, which UPS has done to me on occasion). And this was the FREE shipping! I had no problems installing this unit, so there was no need to call for assistance, but I have ordered from Crutchfield before--a car stereo system--and got into some installation difficulty with it as we were trying to install it on a Sunday. Not only did I get a real human when I called for assistance, I got someone who knew what they were talking about and was able to get me straightened out in no time. Really, even if the price had been higher here than at other places (which, in the case of this unit, it was not), you really can't beat that sort of service!!

    Perfect Replacement

Written By Judge Tom, Olney, Maryland on Sunday, August 28, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This preamp replaced an ageing Adcom GFP 565 preamp which was highly rated by Stereophile Magazine years ago. My system never sounded better. The power amps are Oulaw Audio M2200, 200 watt monoblocks, and the speakers are vintage Infinity RS IV-B 48" high towers, each with double 10 " sealed woofers. The sound is firm ,clean, well focused and detailed and a significant improvement. The controls, and the unit as a whole have a quality feel.I sit close up and do not use the remote, but I wish that the marker dot on the loudness knob was more visible. I value highly the variable output which allows me to match level with the high sensitivity power amps. This is extremely useful. This is a perfect replacement unit..

    Variable out

Written By HTM, Peshtigo WI on Saturday, August 27, 2011

For dat56, depending on what you have your pre plugged into or the size/efficiency of your speaker and the size of your listening room it can be very easy to overpower the space and you will have similar problems with any pre using the "fixed" pre outs. Suggest you use the set to the right on the pre out, labelled "2". The number 1, the left pair are fixed output. while the pair on the right side are variable and controlled by the knob to the right of the "main in" plug. (Immediately to the right of the pre outs.) It allows a 12 dB reduction and it should solve your problem.

    Almost Perfect!

Written By dat56, Nevada, MO on Sunday, August 07, 2011

I needed a preamp that would be compatible with my Bose 901 speaker's EQ and this one seemed to fit the bill. So I ordered it and waited.

It soon arrived, and in fine shape. As I unpacked it, I was very pleased with the solidity and heft of the unit. And upon powering up the first time, the feel of the controls was excellent, other than the fact the tone and balance controls are a little hard to grip. Everything worked quite well, with the operation of switches and pots being very smooth and quiet. Everything about this pre exudes quality and value for the money. My only beef with the day to day operation is with the remote volume control. It is too difficult to find just the right volume at low levels. The motorized volume control changes the volume too much at a time. This is rather annoying after being used to the precision of digital volume controls found on most receivers. But that's about it for downside.

As for sound quality, I am totally thrilled with it. Definitely a step ahead of my mid-level A/V receiver, with greater clarity and definition.

So I would definitely recommend this pre as the anchor of a high quality, high value 2-channel system. It is very flexible in terms of controls and connections. Build quality is very high yet practical, which keeps the price reasonable, and it sounds great.
