Kenwood

My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Our take on the Kenwood KAC-9105D

by Buck Pomerantz

Kenwood Performance Series car amplifiers offer long-term reliability and superior sound quality in a compact, no-nonsense package. The KAC-9105D mono sub punches out up to 900 watts RMS to your subwoofers. A rugged cast-aluminum heatsink combines with two cooling fans to keep this amp running at optimal temperatures, even when you're pushing your system hard. And this bass workhorse will handle a 1-ohm load without breaking a sweat, so go ahead and hook up multiple subs.

A built-in low-pass filter lets you adjust the output so you'll get the best sound possible from your subwoofer/box combo. You can dial in up to 18 dB of bass boost if you want to fatten up the sound. A switchable subsonic filter eliminates inaudible, ultra-low noise that could detract from your sub's performance.

An aluminum cover plate covers and protects the amp's controls and connections, giving your installation a professional look. Speaker-level inputs and signal sensing turn-on allow these amps to hook up to factory radios without preamp outputs.

Features

Class D Amplifier Design: The KAC-9105D is a Class D mono-block amplifier, which uses digital switching to amplify audio signals. This design results in high efficiency and less heat.

MOSFET Switching Power Supply: The amplifier utilizes a MOSFET switching power supply providing thermal stability and efficient switching speeds guaranteeing performance and dependability.

Mono-Power Amp Design: The Kenwood KAC-9105D is designed with specific features to power your subwoofers with a frequency range between 10-200 Hz. The amplifier can handle impedance loads down to 1-ohm.

CEA 2006 Compliant: The KAC-9105D's power ratings are measured according to the strict standards dictated by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards allow you to accurately compare the rated power output of all CEA 2006-compliant amplifiers, even if they come from different brands. Manufacturers who adhere to the standards can display the CEA 2006 logo on their products and packaging. Amplifier Power Ratings:

  • Mono-Channel (4-ohm): 500 watts x 1 channel RMS (20-200 Hz, 1% THD)
  • Mono-Channel (2-ohm): 900 watts x 1 channel RMS (100 Hz, 1% THD)
  • Mono-Channel (1-ohm): over 900 watts x 1 channel
  • Peak Power: 1800 watts x 1 channel

Note: This amplifier is not designed to power a full-range speaker.

Cast Aluminum Heat Sink: The Kenwood KAC-9105D utilizes a cast aluminum heat sink design to ensure that the amplifier stays at its optimal temperature.

Fan Cooled: There are two fans and two vents located on the back side of the amplifier to help dissipate heat and ensure cool, reliable operation. Make sure not to block these vents or fans when you install the amplifier.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • Speaker output contacts ground
  • Speaker wire short-circuits
  • Unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output

Aluminum Cover Plate: The amplifier's controls and connections are hidden under a removable extruded aluminum cover plate. The cover plate provides a professional looking installing while helping to protect the amplifier's connections and control settings. The cover is held in place by two hex head screws. An allen-wrench is supplied to remove the cover.

Blue/Red Illumination: The Kenwood Mono-Channel amplifier features a blue and red LED illumination when the amplifier is turned on. When the power is turned on to the amplifier, the Power indicator will light up red. This indicator will turn off with the amplifier and will turn off if the amplifier goes into protect mode. The amplifier also features a Blue LED lamp on the top of the amplifier which illuminates when the amplifier is on.

Signal-sensing Turn-On Circuitry: When the speaker-level input is used, it is not necessary to connect the power control wire (turn-on lead). The amplifier senses the signal from the speaker-level input and turns the amplifier power on automatically. Shortly after no signal is detected, the amplifier will automatically shut itself off.

Controls

Gain: To accommodate the varying range of signal levels coming from today's factory and aftermarket radios, the Kenwood KAC-9105D features an adjustable, independent gain control (0.2-5.0V). This means that no matter what kind of radio is connected to this amplifier, the appropriate gain control adjustment can be made to ensure loud, clear, distortion-free music.

Low-Pass Filter: The KAC-9105D has a built-in 24dB/octave low-pass filter that is continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost is adjustable from 0-18dB at 40Hz.

Phase Switch: This amplifier is equipped with a 2-way phase switch. You can choose 0° (normal phase) or 180° (reverse phase), whichever position results in stronger performance for the subwoofer.

Infrasonic Filter: This amp features an 18dB/octave Infrasonic Filter. Ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by a subwoofer do not become sound but become unnecessary oscillations, which affect sound by causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can cause damage to speakers. Setting the Infrasonic filter switch to 15Hz or 25Hz cuts the frequencies below the respective frequency to improve the reproduction performance of the speakers by eliminating harmful distortion.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are 0.5625" wide screw terminals that will accommodate up to 4-gauge wire. The remote turn-on terminal is 0.3125" wide and will accept up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are recommended for the power, ground, and remote wires.

Speaker Outputs: The Kenwood KAC-9105D is equipped with two pairs of gold-plated speaker terminals for an easy parallel subwoofer connection. All four speaker terminals are 0.3125" wide screw terminals and will accommodate up to 8-gauge wire. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are recommended for the speaker wires.

Line Level Input: The mono-channel amplifier is equipped with a single pair of gold-plated RCA line level inputs.

Speaker Level Input: The KAC-9105D comes with a two channel speaker level input harness. Once you splice the speaker wires from the receiver to the harness, you have plug-in convenience to the amplifier. This feature makes it easier to add an amplifier to a factory radio or to a receiver with no preamp outputs. The maximum power output from the source receiver can be no more than 40 watts.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a pair of gold-plated RCA line level outputs for feeding a full-range stereo signal to another amplifier. It is the same signal that is input through the line inputs. The amplifier's crossovers have no effect on the line level output signal.

Fuses: The KAC-9105D is equipped with three 30 amp ATC blade fuses.

This amp is insane!

Written By Zach, Eau Claire, WI on Sunday, June 02, 2013

After doing some amp research, I was very disappointed when I found this amp retailed for this much. I only have two 10" Kenwood's, so I can't let this amp show its full potential yet, bet even having it turned down, the output is amazing. It can hold the low notes for longer than I can stand it! I would highly recommend this amp, and even if you cant find it for a cheaper price, it's worth the price!
Pros:
Design, power ouput
Cons:
Just a few dollars too expensive.

Great amp but randomly stopped working

Written By john the sub guy, rochester, new york on Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Truly was a great amp running at 1 ohm to my dual voice coil polk audio dxi's. But after a good year of abuse the amp showed its age and just died. Checked everything and the amp simply fried out. At 900 rms u heard my cavalier coming from a quarter mile away. The amp hit real hard and the bass was clean but had some distortion. but it just simply wasnt solid in the long run. I may explore my options with another brand of amplifiers. But for the money I think kenwood is a little overrated. Anyone can make powerful amps. I dont think kenwood is one of the best anymore!
Pros:
Powerful. Punchy. Deep.
Cons:
Unstable. Didnt break my windshield..

Kenwood KAC-9105D

Written By Jake, Lakeville, MN on Friday, October 05, 2012

Love the power it puts out. Plus the sleek, attractive look to it. I'm running this amp at 2ohms to two 12" Kenwood KFC-w3009's(older subs) and I can make it bump with maintaining quality sharp bass kicks in my sealed box. Before i was running these same subs to the earliest model of this amp, the KAC-9102d, but the 9105d dosen't seem to be hitting the highs or lows as well as the 9102d,(any suggestions?) but the 9105d still delivers mid frequencies with a very powerful kick that everyone is looking for in their setup! But i also think that is because the 9102d had a HPF as well as a LPF. So it let the desired note frequency in and hit. nonetheless it is a great amp worth the money!
Pros:
Nice sound. Very sleek and versatile. Worth the price. Has some very nice features in the amp. Mid frequencies have a huge kick which could shake the block. Very powerful!!
Cons:
No high-pass frequency.

Unknown Issues!

Written By AudioPro78, KC on Thursday, June 14, 2012

This for my friend I helped install with. The problems That others seem to be having sounds like low Voltage and/or Low Amperage That may require people to look into the Alternators! I installed 2 of these amps in my friends 86' 5.0 Mustang, and they are working great after upgrading the alt. to 120 amps. People need to remember that you can only get so much out of an alt. and the rest will have to come from somewhere or the amp will protect itself. Most amps are rated at 13.8-14.4 volts. Most alt. only put out 50 amps, but the vehicle needs most of those amps to run correctly. These amplifiers work very well if installed, and tuned correctly! Well worth the money!
Pros:
1ohm stable! Light weight!
Cons:
Fan(s) could be more efficient!

updated review

Written By Alex, Denver Co on Monday, May 21, 2012

Wanted to update my last post. and start by apologising for my spelling not my strong point. I bought a 50 farad cap and the head light dimming went away for sure. Amp still cuts off. although its not as fequent as before, it still happens. my cap stores between 14.4 and 13.9 volts. After playing several songs, the amp cuts off when the cap reads 12.4 or lower. Im not sure what that means my guess is the amp is sucking so much power it cant handle the load and goes into protection mode. Since i bought the cap it seems silly to only run a single amp so i ordered two more sums and an amp and im in the process of hooking up my other amp for the door speakers. 4 more hours and ill have everything together.
Pros:
simple install good sound 90% of the time
Cons:
cutting out during high loads

Decent

Written By Alex, Denver colorado on Monday, May 14, 2012

I've had this amp for just over year and a half running two fosgate p2 at 2 ohms defently gives them a work out. Noticed incredible difference when I switch to deck with 4v outputs. I have same problem as others tends to cut out after running deep bass after a few mins the hitter the day the faster. I don't agree about the terminal size as stated by someone else, I got full 0 gage wire in without much hassle. After reading reviews here going to buy a compassator soon to see if it fixes the problem. Over all good amp never cuts out on rock music but can't make it through Beamer Benz or bently. If compassator doesn't correct problem I'll be buying new amp soon!
Pros:
Price power
Cons:
Cuting out dimming lights

Had it hooked it to my 2012 Kicker L7 wired at 2ohms, running 0 to 4 gauge wiring. The bass would hit but after a min of bass hitting then bass note would get weak. Cheap price though on amp but wasn't happy with performance.
Pros:
Cheap.
Cons:
Performance Sucks.

Great amp

Written By bassheadjoe, Monroe,MI on Tuesday, January 31, 2012

I bought 2 of these amps. Awesome power. Only thing. I read it is suppose to have 2 fans. And on both of mine and a friends they do not have 2 fans. It is only 1 fan. But, they are in my 03 focus trunk and never over heater. Great power and reliable. Daily user. recommend this amp to everyone.
Pros:
Small, powerful, fan cooled, almost everything about it.
Cons:
Will not fit a 0 gauge for the power wire.

Great Amp, Could have better power terminals

Written By MaxS, Brookfield, CT on Sunday, October 09, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this amp with 2 12" kenwood subs, so far the amp is great and I love it, I used this setup to replace an old MTX sub/amp kit that I have and I am glad I finally increased the power. I haven't had any problems with the amp or subs yet and I don't anticipate that I would either. I think some people that have problems with the setup might not have it setup correctly or most likely need a capacitor that can supply those deep base notes because it works great for me.

Like I said the only thing I was disappointed with they kenwood needs/should change is to make the power/ground terminals much bigger, and maybe even redesign them like some of the other high output amps I have so that they can fit 4 gauge wire much easier.. I had to trim the wire down quite a bit and even then it was hard to get in, I will be looking to get a longer gold plated screw to fix it if I can find one.
