Sound bar speakers: room-filling sound with less clutter

Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.

Our take on the Sony HT-CT150

by Marshall Chase

Sound is half of the home theater experience, and Sony's HT-CT150 helps you break free from your TV's tinny built-in speakers. This simple, room-friendly system uses advanced signal processing and internal amplification to deliver dynamic sound and rich bass with your movies, music, and games. Three 3D-ready HDMI inputs let you hook up your compatible audio/video sources and switch easily among them, while maintaining the best possible picture and sound quality. You won't need a receiver — just connect your Blu-ray player, gaming console, or other digital video components directly to the HT-CT150.

      Soundbar & Powered Subwoofer

Soundbar Speaker: The HT-CT150 Home Theater System's soundbar speaker (SS-MCT150) is equipped with three full-range 2" x 3-5/8" cone type drivers in a bass reflex enclosure. The soundbar speaker can be securely placed on a stand or shelf using eight integrated rubber-feet or mounted to the wall with its two rear-mounted keyhole slots and mounting screws (screws sold separately). The SS-MCT150 act as your home theater systems front and center speakers as well as giving you the effect that you have rear speakers positioned behind you.

Note: The soundbar speaker's keyhole slots are spaced 10-3/16" apart.

Powered Subwoofer Module: The HT-CT150 Home Theater System's powered subwoofer module (SA-WCT150) is equipped with a 5-1/8" cone type subwoofer in a bass-reflex enclosure powered by a built-in digital Sony S-Master amplifier. The built-in digital amplifier also provides power to the system's soundbar speaker. The digital amplifier is rated at 50 watts per channel for the soundbar speaker unit and powered subwoofer. The powered subwoofer module also features the HT-CT150 system's audio/video inputs and outputs, as well as basic controls and an LCD display.

System Cable: The Sony HT-CT150 includes a 10' proprietary speaker cable which plugs into the rear-panel of the soundbar speaker and the rear-panel of the powered subwoofer module.

      Audio & Video Features

S-Force Surround: By using a powerful digital Sony S-Master amplifier and DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology, realistic surround sound can be generated from this two-piece surround sound system. Unlike other "virtual surround" technologies, rear sound is generated from the soundbar speaker using sophisticated digital sound processing and does not need to be bounced off of side walls. No matter what the size or shape of the room or what is on the wall, it is possible to hear sounds from behind you without needing to place speakers behind you.

Digital Surround Formats: The HT-CT150 supports the following digital audio formats.

      • Dolby Pro Logic II: Creates five full-bandwidth output channels from 2 channel sources.
      • Dolby Digital: All six channels in this format are recorded separately for superior channel separation.
      • DTS: Provides 5.1 discrete channels of high quality digital audio.
      • Linear PCM: Linear PCM is a method of encoding audio information digitally which can have up to 8 channels of uncompressed audio. This wider bandwidth allows for high resolution audio which is closer to the original. This system can accommodate 2ch LPCM through its digital audio or HDMI inputs, as well as 5.1ch and 7.1ch LPCM through its HDMI inputs.

Note: This system does not support Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS-HD or Linear PCM sampling frequencies of no more than 48 kHz.

Sound Fields: You can select from one of the following sound fields to optimize your surround sound experience.

      • Standard: Suits various sources.
      • Movie: Recreates powerful and realistic sound, along with clear dialogue.
      • Drama: Suited for TV dramas.
      • Music: Suited for music programs or music videos on Blu-ray Discs/DVDs.
      • Sports: Produces the play-by-play commentary clearly and realistic sound with surround effects, such as cheering.
      • News: Produces the announcer's voice clearly.
      • Game: Produces powerful and realistic sound, suited for video games.
      • 2CH Stereo: Suited for music CDs.
      • Portable Audio: Suited to replay portable compressed audio source (available only on DM Port).

Note: You can set a different sound field for each input source.

Speaker Level: You can adjust the level (+/-6dB) and balance of the soundbar speaker and the powered subwoofer. This setting will be applied to all sound fields.

Bass & Treble: You can adjust the bass and treble independently from -6 to +6 dB.

A/V Sync: You can delay the sound using this function when the image is slower than the sound when you are playing a Dolby, Digital, DTS or Linear PCM source connected by a digital audio input or HDMI.

Audio DRC: This feature narrows the dynamic range of a Dolby Digital/DTS sound track for enjoying movies at low volume.

Night Mode: You can enjoy sound effects and hear the dialogue clearly even at a low volume levels using this function.

Max Volume Limiter: You can limit the maximum volume level of the system from 1 to 49 in 1-step increments.

Digital & Analog Audio Inputs: The Sony HT-CT150 Home Theater System features both analog audio and digital audio inputs for connecting external audio sources such as your DVD player and CD player.

      • Digital Audio: The HT-CT150 features 2 optical inputs and 1 coaxial input.
      • Analog Audio: The system also features 2 pair of RCA stereo analog inputs.

HDMI (ver.1.4): The Sony HT-CT150 features 3 HDMI (ver.1.4) inputs and 1 HDMI (ver.1.4) output which supports 1080/24p, x.v.Color, Deep Color, and 3D, as well as ARC & HDMI control. The system can detect and receive the best possible video and audio signals from all connected devices via HDMI, making connection and performance as simple as plugging in a single wire. Sony's HDMI Active Intelligence, transmits both audio and video signals through one HDMI cable. The system's HDMI inputs/output support 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.

Note: The HT-CT150 system does not feature composite, S-video, or component video inputs/outputs.

1080/24p: The Sony HT-CT150 allows you to watch movies at their native frame rate 24p format (24 frames per second) when paired with a 24p playback device like a Blu-ray Disc Player.

3D Pass Through: The Sony HT-CT150 is compatible with 3D-ready Blu-ray disc movies, video games and other 3D content through its HDMI (v.1.4) connections.

Note: 3D viewing requires 3D-ready source with 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D glasses, and high-speed HDMI cable. Other 3D accessories may also be required.

x.v.Color: The Sony HT-CT150 supports x.v.Color, offering a wider color range than the current broadcast standard. For the x.v.Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Deep Color: The Sony HT-CT150 also supports Deep Color which allows the color depth of video signals passing through HDMI to be raised. The number of colors that could be expressed by 1 pixel was 24 bits (16,777,216 colors) with a standard HDMI jack. However, the number of colors which can be expressed by 1 pixel is 36 bits with a Deep Color enabled HDMI jack. Since the gradation of the depth of a color can be expressed more finely with more bits, continuous color changes can be more smoothly expressed. For the Deep Color feature to be useful, the entire video production chain must be compatible (camera-editing-format-player-display).

Note: x.v. Color and Deep Color technology are supported only when source product, HDMI cable, media and HDTV all support those features.

Standby Pass-Through: You can conveniently access all your HDMI connected devices without having to power on the HT-CT150 system.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the HT-CT150 system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

      Convenience Features

Display Dimmer: The brightness of the powered subwoofer modules front-panel display can be set to one of two brightness levels.

Sleep Timer: You can set the system to turn off at a preset time when you want to fall asleep listening to music. You can preset the time in 10-minute increments from 10-90 minutes.

Auto Standby: You can reduce the system's power consumption. The system enters standby mode automatically when you do no operate the system for approximately 30 minutes and the system is not outputting sound for approximately 30 minutes.

      Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The HT-CT150 comes supplied with a full-function IR remote control (RM-AAU072) for wireless operation of the system, which is also pre-programmed to operate other Sony audio/video equipment. You can also change the factory settings of the input buttons on the remote to suit the components in your system.

Bravia Theater Sync: Sony's Bravia Theater Sync feature allows you to easily manage select BRAVIA televisions and Sony HDMI audio and video components with a single remote. By connecting Sony components that are compatible with the HDMI Control function with a HDMI cable, operation is simplified in the following ways.

      • One-Touch-Play: When you playback a component such as a DVD/Blu-ray Disc Player, the receiver and the TV are turned on automatically and switch to the appropriate HDMI input.
      • System Audio Control: While watching TV, you can select to output the sound from the TV speaker or the speakers connected to the receiver.
      • System Power Off: When you turn off the TV, the receiver and connected components are also turned off simultaneously.

      Reliable and consistent

Written By Steve H., Edmond, OK on Saturday, May 11, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read all of the reviews on Crutchfield and several on other websites, so I knew what to expect from the CT-150. It meets my expectations for our use in a spare bedroom turned into a TV room (approx. 12' x 13'). It's a SONY, so I knew it would sound crisp and clear. I do have to turn it up to around 22 to geta good volume on it, the max volume is 50. I don't have any problems with connecting to our Vizio TV or using the remote. Then again, I'm also not trying to program everything to work together, using different remotes for the TV and speakers is not that big of a deal for me. On a side note, I also purchased the CT-260 (300 watt) SONY sound bar system for a smaller room, the CT-260 sounds a lot better and offers better features.
      Pros:
SONY reliability, clean sound, adequate volume (for its power), nice design
      Cons:
      No blue tooth

Sony HT-CT150 Sound Bar is a hit!

Written By CB1970, GA on Monday, May 06, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this sound bar to go with my LG HD 3D Smart TV. I had a small budget and I needed the best sound for my awesome TV. This sound bar is fabulous, I hooked up my TV, Blueray, and DirectTV, and I can change the sound quality based on what I am watching (movie, news, music etc). I highly recommend this product and I will purchase another for my home office TV. -CB
      Pros:
Great sound, easy set, and easy to use.
      Cons:
Close to perfect but the only critic I can make is that the sub woofer has a cord and that limits where you can put it.

      Sony HT-CT150

Written By Mike, Overland Park, KS on Wednesday, March 27, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good system for the money. I was happy with the ease of setup, the options for connectivity and the sound. There are systems that sound better, but for the price point this system has very good sound and is appropriate for a small or mid sized room or personal viewing.
      Pros:
Ease of Setup, many connection options and configuration options. Good sound for the price point.
      Cons:
Not the best sound for larger rooms like a movie room. This is a smaller system.

reserched this product extensively, first time ever purchase said idem. Very unhappy with sound quality, and not being compatable with TV remote, Even after asking "Crutchfield Tech." but should have realized by the explanation given he wasn't familar with this product either.
      Pros:
      compact unit
      Cons:
sound quality poor no matter which setting, will not operate with another manufacture remote (possibly not even another Sony remote)

Sony HT-CT150 great value for small room

Written By MarkWT, Jacksonville, Fl on Sunday, January 13, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A perfect match for my Sony Bravia 32". Hook up was easy, just be sure to have enough HDMI cables and Optical cables. I am please with the sound and the fact it does not have a wireless sub was not an issue. It is set up in our bedroom and is all I expected as far as improving the fidelity and depth lacking form the TV. For the price it is more than expected. After a few days I have been able to get a balanced and better overall sound. If not carefull sub can be a little over powering. The sound bar I found sounds better with the center channel set to -2 .This lets the outer speakers to be heard. (surround effect). Great value. Perfect for small den, in home office or bedroom. Consider before buying the room you are going to set up in.
      Pros:
      Easy hook up.
      Cons:
May take a few days to "Tweak"

      Flat Screen Sound Bar

I purchased a 50" flat screen tv...great picture but sound was weak and tinny. I researched many audio options for our needs and selected the Sony HT-CT150 because the size was correct and reviews were very positive. I am very pleased with the audio now and enjoy movies that much more.
      Pros:
Affordable, great sound and many audio options
      Cons:
Takes a while to get everything right...but well worth the effort

Sony HT-CT150 -- good add-on to Sony TV

Written By RayH, Oak Ridge, TN on Sunday, January 06, 2013
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this for Xmas; installed after holidays. Replaced old Panasonic 5+SW system that was a hassle to use. Have DirecTV HR24D-500 HD receiver/recorder, Sony KDL-40Z4100 TV, Sony player DVP-NS710H, and Roku XDS player, all with HDMI. Also have attic TV antenna feed. Sound bar physical setup very easy. Only problem: how to minimize number and use of remotes. After fooling around, decided Sony stuff would not interact well with DirecTV ("Sat") and Roku boxes. So, put those directly on separate TV HDMI inputs. Connected DVD to sound bar HDMI input, and sound bar output to TV HDMI input. Ran optical audio from TV to sound bar. Now control everything but Roku from DirecTV remote. Turning on the Sat box turns on TV, which automatically turns on sound bar ("Bravia"). Inserting DVD tells TV to switch to DVD via the sound bar connection. Removing DVD sends TV back to the active Sat input. Use DirecTV remote to switch TV to Roku input; Roku is always on anyway. Use Roku remote to select Roku channel and play. Use DirecTV remote to switch back to Sat or Ant inputs to watch TV. DirecTV remote adjusts/mutes sound bar volume. Only need sound bar remote occasionally to adjust audio modes ("standard" OK 90% of time for me) and SW settings. Dropped SW level to -1 setting and increased treble to +1 due to room and placement conditions. Sound far clearer than TV speakers, MUCH more bass, pretty good surround sound effects. Wife happy: no user learning curve, mostly just 1 controller. All good.
      Pros:
Easy physical setup. TV remote window JUST clears top of sound bar. Flat spkr cables run UNDER TV base without squashing; keeps cable clutter down. Bravia communications work fine with different vintage Sony components. Sound quality is very noticeable improvement over TV spkrs, especially bass.
      Cons:
Spkr cables between SW and sound bar are kind of short - were OK for me, tho. Sound bar status display on top front of SW is pretty dim, espec with room lights on. Directions too slim - were not much help in handling non-Sony connections. Needed 3 HDMI TV inputs to handle my setup to minimize remotes required. Sound separation effects are not as effective as hoped (but not too bad); very little surround sound (may need to adjust settings some more).

Sound is better than just TV but doesn't seem to resound off Walsh as manual says and subwoofer has to turned on as well as a mess of buttons on remote after turning all on with tv remote. Everything turns off with tv remote.

      Sony HT-CT150

      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit looks nice and is an improvement over the TV speakers. Thought that with a total speaker output of 200w that I would get more volume then I did. Overall it connected easily to my Sony TV and with an HDMI cable to the ARC connector the TV and speakers reconize each other and play well together.
      Pros:
      Works well and looks great
      Cons:
      expected more volume

My wife and I are extremely pleased with our Sony Sound bar. It makes watching TV in our bedroom a great experience.
      Pros:
      Great Sound for the price.
      Cons:
      I can't think of any

Delivered exactly on time and in great condition. The system sounds excellent and was everything I had hoped for.
      Cons:
You need to plan on having the Bass Module on the same level as your comfy chair so that it can receive your remote control signals. Once you accomplish this, it works great and sounds wonderful.

      Good Value Sound Bar

Written By Mark M, Houston, Tx on Thursday, December 13, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading reviews I purchased this unit and couldn't be happier - After purchasing a LG 47" flat screen for den which I mounted on an articulating arm I found myself continually backing up dvr to understand speech - speakers in tv were lousy - I was able to fabricate a bracket to sound bar and mount it under tv so it aims same direction as tv - was worried about heat from bar after reading accompanying instructions but no problem - no heat noticed from sound bar - all powered goods are located in sub-woofer - sounds great - not as good as 7.1 system I have in home theater room but that's to be expected
      Pros:
nice sound for reasonable price - ease of connection due to multiple inputs including several hdmi - no longer having to back up dvr to understand speech
      Cons:
none for me - sub-woofer is hard wired to sound bar and is where remote receiver is located which may be a problem for some people

      salesman

Written By New York James, New York City on Wednesday, September 26, 2012
      Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

sound is wonderful...but the salesman told me 4 feet was enough HDMI cable...and that the power for the unit was in the sound bar itself. Now I have the product..but not nearly enough length of cable to reach the sub-woofer ...where the actual brains and power of the system are located. I am very disapointed that I was given wrong information. It is costing me time...that I could be enjoying the results I expected.
      Pros:
      sounds good
      Cons:
you need about 12 feet of cable to reach the subwoofer
