Fujifilm

Want a camera you can grow into? Try a "hybrid."

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, many hybrids have advanced control and processing options that you can explore for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, and feature interchangeable add-on lenses for different shooting scenarios. But their hybrid design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

Our take on the Fujifilm X-Pro1 (no lens included)

by Woody Sherman
Fujifilm X-PRO1

The Fujifilm X-Pro1's controls are streamlined yet instantly available

Is this the camera you've been waiting for?

The anticipation has been building for a while now. Ever since Fujifilm released the X-100 in 2011, the photography world has been waiting for an interchangeable-lens camera with a similar design pedigree.

Sometimes you get more than you expect. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 isn't just a "hybrid" reboot of the X-100. They've taken every aspect of that camera and its design and pushed it forward towards to the professional level. A large, exclusive-design 16-megapixel "X-Trans" sensor nearly dispenses with all moiré and false color artifacts while maintaining exquisite resolution. The innovative hybrid optical/electronic multi-viewfinder has been re-engineered to work with interchangeable lenses. The back LCD display has increased in both size and resolution.

Fujifilm XF 18mm f/2 wide-angle lens

The Fujifilm XF 18mm f/2 wide-angle lens is one of several available for the X-Pro1

Great pictures start with great glass

And of course, there's the reason why we're here: Fujifilm's new X-Mount system means this camera can switch lenses on a dime. Three lenses were announced with this camera's release, and more are in the pipeline. They're all wide-aperture fixed-focus primes, an 18mm f/2, a 35mm f/1.4, and a macro-tele 60mm f/2.4. No safe, cover-the-easy-bases kit zoom lens option here (yet!). Prime lenses, because they're optically simpler than zooms, offer a level of detail that zooms can't match, while being remarkably free of fringing and distortion. If there was ever a better indicator of this camera's pursuit of the professional market, I don't know what it would be.

Classic looks, modern talents

Of course, the retro, "rangefinder" aesthetic remains. Like the rest of Fujifilm's popular X-Series, the X-Pro1 has a streamlined look and feel that harkens back to the 35mm film cameras of the '50s and '60s. Don't let that fool you. This camera positively bristles with innovative technology. Full, 24 frame-per-second HD video comes standard. The control interfaces have been designed with careful attention paid to real-world feedback.

Fujifilm has a distinguished history with traditional film photography. That's why the X-Pro1 incorporates intriguing options for creating images normally associated with old-school film cameras. There's a Multiple Exposure mode that recreates the experience of layering two exposures on one film frame through advanced digital processing. Film Simulation settings have been enhanced by the addition of professional color negative film modes.

You know, you don't have to be a professional to buy this camera. There are plenty of assistive settings that will make you look like one — built right in. However, if you're itching to take your photography a giant step further, this camera will take your enthusiasm and put it into overdrive.

    Features

Overview: The retro-looking Fujifilm X-Pro1 is an interchangeable lens digital camera. It has the new X lens mount, and is compatible with the new XF Fujinon fast aperture prime lenses. This "body only" package does not include any lenses.

Compatible Lenses: The X-Pro1 is compatible with the following XF Fujinon prime lenses: XF18mm F2 R (item #072XP18MM), XF35mm F1.4 R (072XP35MM), and XF60mm F2.4 R Macro (072XP60MM). These lenses offer precise control over depth-of-field and excellent out-of-focus bokeh, due to the design of the molded aperture diaphragm blades.

High Performance LCD Monitor: The X-Pro1 has a 3" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 1,230,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode. The monitor has a special anti-reflective coating which reduces the surface reflectivity down to 0.2%. When shooting, you can choose from a standard display, a detailed display, or a custom display which allows you to select from up to 15 items to display in the monitor.

Hybrid Viewfinder: The camera is equipped a Hybrid Viewfinder, which is switchable between an optical viewfinder and electronic viewfinder. When an XF series lens is mounted, the viewfinder magnification and frame size are automatically switched, depending upon the mounted lens. As you bring the camera up to your face, an eye sensor in the viewfinder will switch automatically to viewfinder mode. A built-in diopter allows you to adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight, either with or without glasses. Details of each type of viewfinder include the following:

    • Optical Viewfinder (OVF): The Reverse Galilean Optical Viewfinder offers a wide field of view for maximum clarity with no shutter time lag. It has approximately 90% frame coverage and 0.37x/0.6x switchable magnification.
    • Electronic Viewfinder (EVF): The 0.47" High-Definition Electronic Viewfinder provides 100% coverage and detailed shooting information with its 1,440,000 dots of resolution. You can preview focus, depth of field, exposure, and white balance before you shoot, and view the photo instantly after shooting.

Image Sensor/Processor: The X-Pro1 features a 23.6mm x 15.6mm APS-C format, X-Trans CMOS image sensor with 16.3-million effective square pixels. The new EXR Processor Pro translate data captured by the complex color filter array pattern of the image sensor at lightning speed to achieve higher speed and precision than previous generations.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. No memory cards are included with the camera.

Still Image Quality: The X-Pro1 records still images in JPEG format in 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect ratios in three sizes and two compression ratios (Fine or Normal). In addition, RAW images can be recorded from the raw, uncompressed image data from the camera's image sensor. RAW format images must be processed on a computer using the supplied RAW File Converter application software. You can also shoot a RAW + JPEG image at the same time, with separate RAW and JPEG files recorded and stored.

JPEG 3:2 Image Sizes JPEG 16:9 Image Sizes JPEG 1:1 Image Sizes
    L: 4896 x 3624
    M: 3456 x 2304

    M: 3456 x 1944
    S: 2496 x 1408
    L: 3264 x 3264
    M: 2304 x 2304
    S: 1664 x 1664

HD Movies: The X-Pro1 can record Full HD movies in MOV format (H.264 standard) at 24 frames per second with stereo sound. Available frames sizes are 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) and 1280 x 720 (HD). The maximum movie length is 29 minutes.

Motion Panorama: The camera is capable of taking panoramic images by panning the camera through one of two angle settings. As you pan the camera, multiple frames are recorded and automatically stitched together in the camera to create the panoramic image. The Motion Panorama options are:

    • Motion Panorama L:
      • Vertical: 2160 x 7680 (16.6M)
      • Horizontal: 7680 x 1440 (11.1M)
    • Motion Panorama M:
      • Vertical: 2160 x 5120 (11.1M)
      • Horizontal: 5120 x 1440 (7.3M)

Shooting Modes: The Fujifilm X-Pro1 lets you set the shutter speed and aperture automatically or manually. The shutter speed and aperture settings combine for four shooting modes:

    Shooting Mode Shutter Speed¹ Aperture²
    Program AE Automatic Automatic
    Shutter Priority Manual Automatic
    Aperture Priority Automatic Manual
    Manual Manual Manual
    • ¹ Shutter Speed Options: Auto, 1/4000, 1/2000, 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, Time (selectable 2 to 30 sec), Bulb

    • ² Aperture Options: Depends upon the attached XF lens: XF18mmF2 R (F2.0 to F16), XF35mmF1.4 R (F1.4 to F16), XF60mmF2.4 R Macro (F2.4 to F22)

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 200, 240, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 2000, 2500, 3200, 4000, 5000, or 6400. Extended settings are equivalent to ISO100 (Low), ISO12800 (High) or ISO25600 (High). You can also choose an Auto ISO setting with maximum settings of 400, 800, 1600 or 3200. The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light and Underwater (requires waterproof case). In addition, you can measure for a white balance value or display and select from a list of color temperatures.

Film Simulation: The X-Pro1 can simulate the effects of different kinds of film, including black-and-white. You can select one of the following options:

    • Provia/Standard: standard color reproduction
    • Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited for nature photos
    • Astia/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
    • Pro Negative Std: a soft-toned palette. The range of hues available for skin tones is enhanced; a good choice for studio portraits.
    • Pro Negative Hi: offers slightly more contrast than Pro Negative Std, making it ideal for outdoor portraits.
    • Monochrome: standard black-and-white
    • Monochrome + Y Filter: black-and-white pictures with slightly increased contrast; tones down the brightness of the sky
    • Monochrome + R Filter: black-and-white picture with increased contrast; also tones down the brightness of the sky
    • Monochrome + G Filter: softens skin tones in black-and-white photos
    • Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone

Color Space: Depending upon how you intend to use the image, you can choose the output color space at the general sRGB setting or the broader color rendition of Adobe RGB.

Exposure Compensation: Using the dedicated Exposure Compensation dial on the top of the camera, you can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in all shooting modes except Manual.

Bracketing: You can take a series of photos with varying settings for each picture. Bracketing options include:

    • AE: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots up to about 6 fps, one using the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed by the selected amount, and the third underexposed by the same amount.
    • ISO: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots, one using the current sensitivity setting, the second with the sensitivity raised, and the third with the sensitivity lowered.
    • Film Simulation: Each time the shutter is released, the camera takes one shot and processes it to create copies with the film simulation settings selected.
    • Dynamic Range: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots up to about 6 fps, each with different dynamic ranges: 100% for the first, 200% for the second, and 400% for the third.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. The camera can take pictures at 3 frames per second or 6 fps. Focus and exposure are determined by the first frame, and the flash is turned off automatically.

Multiple Exposures: You can create a photograph that combines two exposures.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. The 10 second self timer is recommended for self portraits, while the 2-second self timer is used to reduce blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed.

Focus Modes: The camera lets you choose how the camera focuses. You can select Single AF, Continuous AF, or Manual Focus using the focus ring on the attached lens.

Flash Modes: The X-Pro1 does not have a built-in flash. Optional flash units can be used for additional lighting at night or indoors under low light. Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
    • 2nd Curtain Sync: the flash fires immediately before the shutter closes
    • Suppressed Flash (Off): flash does not fire, even when the subject is poorly lit.

Light Metering: The X-Pro1 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can select from three metering options: Multi, Spot, or Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a 5-frame cascading display (two previous and two following frames cascaded behind the highlighted image), a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

    • Date: Search for photos by date
    • Face: Search for photos that include faces
    • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
    • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, pictures taken in burst mode, or movie footage.
    • Upload Mark: Search for pictures selected for upload to a specified destination.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 3:2, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, normal playback that zooms in on faces, or multiple pictures at once.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The X-Pro1 is powered by the supplied NP-W126 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully-charged NP-W126 is good for approximately 300 shots. The supplied BC-W126 battery charger will charge an NP-W126 battery in about 150 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

X-Pro1 Accessories: The following accessories are made specifically for the X-Pro1:

    • XF18mmF2 R, XF35mmF1.4 R and XF60mmF2.4 R Fujinon lenses

    Excellent Camera

Written By Dan, New York on Friday, June 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As an owner of the X100--which I love--I decided to purchase the XPRO-1 after contemplating the new Olympus 4/3rds OM5. There were three reasons why I decided to go with the XPRO-1: image quality, high ISO performance and the quality of Fuji's 35mm (~50mm eq.) f/1.4 lens. I make my living with Nikon DSLRs and recently bought the D4 and D800E and the XPRO-1 fits into the mix nicely for the right applications. It has the same look and feel as the X100 in my opinion. I think it's a good value overall.
    Pros:
Image quality, high ISO performance; non-intrusive; light (compared to DSLRs); superb 35mm f/1.4 lens; ease of use (set it and the firmware that many complain about just gets out of your way) and build quality.
    Cons:
Really, I have none except to say some weatherproofing would have been nice.

    Fujifilm X-Pro1 (no lens included)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fantastic little camera that could really stand out once the firmware is completely sorted out. Don't look at it as a DSLR replacement, but rather judge it on its own merits and you'll see just how good it is. I'm very impressed with jpg quality, though getting that quality does take some work. Shutter speed and aperture are easy to manipulate, and while it would be handy to be able to change ISO with a dial click, it's not too big of a deal.
    Pros:
Amazing picture quality, small size is less intimidating, OVF is pretty well-implemented.
    Cons:
Sluggish AF, menus are a bit convoluted, picking focus points on the fly require way too many button presses, takes some getting used to adjusting to the parallax and understanding why the camera does what it does.
