Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the PSB Imagine Mini

by Kristen Schaub

Mini size, mighty sound

The deceptively small Imagine Mini is sure to make a big sonic impact in your home. Expect to hear the kind of realistic sound PSB's larger Imagine series speakers are known for — including an impressively large soundstage and surprisingly low bass — from a speaker that's both versatile and cute. A pair of Imagine Minis makes an impressive desktop system. Or use them with any of the other speakers in the Imagine family to create a multichannel home theater system. Plus, their compact, seamlessly curved cabinets make them ideal for stylish urban environments where space is at a premium.

Imagine Mini

The Imagine Mini comes in five beautiful finishes: Black Ash, High-gloss White, High-gloss Black, Dark Cherry, and Walnut.

Precise driver design for natural sound

Tweeter

The drivers are mounted flush with the smooth front baffles for improved sound dispersion.

Each Imagine Mini features a highly accurate 1" titanium dome tweeter that produces smooth, sparkling highs. The 4-1/2" woofer uses a proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone, which makes it very stiff and light. The resulting midrange is clean and balanced, with tight bass response. A highly efficient motor structure drives the woofer, and uses a unique compound magnet that helps to reduce any audible distortion from the speaker. It means you'll hear every note as clearly and accurately as it was recorded by the artist.

Cabinet

PSB's Imagine speakers feature acoustically inert enclosures, with seamless, unbroken surfaces that are beautiful to look at.

Solid, elegantly curved cabinets

All Imagine speakers have smooth, 1-1/2"-thick front baffles that blend almost seamlessly with the seven-layer laminated MDF side, top, and bottom panels. Plus, the heavy internal bracing ensures an impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosure. The top, side, and bottom panels of the Black Ash, Dark Cherry, and Walnut speakers are clad in a real wood veneer that's hand selected for its beauty and quality. The High-gloss Black and High-gloss White speakers are finished with multiple coats of high-gloss paint, hand-polished to a stunning shine.

    Driver Technology

True-to-Nature Sound: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker produces a large soundstage and impressive bass along with the true-to-nature sound for which PSB is known. The PSB Imagine mini has a wide frequency and dynamic range, natural tonal balance, and precise spatial imaging needed to make both music and movies lifelike and enjoyable.

2-Way Design: The PSB Imagine mini employs a 2-way speaker design. It houses a single 1" ferrofluid-cooled titanium dome tweeter with a neodymium magnet and one 4.5" clay/ceramic filled polypropylene woofer with rubber surround. The result is startlingly big and commanding sound with fine detail and emotion.

    • 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, ferrofluid-cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.
    • 4.5" Clay/Ceramic Filled Polypropylene Woofer: The 4.5" woofer cone is clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The woofer's magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plug enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

Crossover Network: PSB engineers designed the crossover frequency very low relative to the woofer size in order to provide the same sound no matter where the speaker is placed. The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and woofer are crossed over at 2,200 Hz.

    Enclosure Design

Small Cabinet: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker is the smallest member of the imagine family. The cabinet measures just 5.6875" (w) x 9.375" (h) x 8.25" (d), and weighs only 6.5 lbs.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The PSB Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker uses a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for higher efficiency and deeper bass.

Detachable Grille: The PSB Imagine mini includes a detachable cloth/metal grille.

    Connections

Binding Posts: The binding post input terminals are located on the bottom of the speaker cabinet. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge. Single banana plugs also fit, but because the posts are on the bottom of the speaker, the banana plug extends below the bottom surface and the speaker can't sit flat on a shelf. Single banana plugs may work with some wall brackets and stands.

Color-Coded: The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

    Mounting Options

Rubber Base: The PSB Imagine mini features an integrated rubber base to help secure the speaker in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Optional Speaker Stands: The PSB PFS-27 speaker stand (760PFS27, sold separately) is designed specifically for the Imagine mini bookshelf loudspeaker.

Optional Wall-Mount Brackets: There are two M6 threaded inserts on the bottom of each speaker that can be used with PSB's PWB-1 wall-mount bracket (760PWB1, sold separately).

Note: The speakers contain no integrated mounting brackets or keyhole slots.

Fantastic Sound in a Small Package

Written By Bob, Athens, Georgia on Saturday, June 01, 2013

When I called Crutchfield for advice on which speakers to purchase, the representative with whom I spoie strongly suggested the PSB Imagine Mini. I was skeptical at first, but I decided to accept the advice I was hearing. The fact that I could return the speakers if I did not like them also played an important role in my decision to buy the SBs.

Needless to say, I have been very pleased with these mighty minies. The sound quality is very clear and clean which was promised. The small size of these speakers makes it possible to move the speakers at will and still enjoy the sound.

I listen mainly to classical music. With these speakers I am hearing detail that until now had eluded my ears. Don't let the small size of these speakers put you off. I am of the firm opinion that I am hearing high quality sound over the entire audio spectrum. Now that I have positioned these little jewels for the best possible sound, I have no reservations at all about my decision to purchase these speakers.
    Pros:
    very clean sound
    Cons:
Spending $1000 more might have brough a better speaker. Right now, I doubt it.

Amazing, and they get better with break in

Written By Joe, Connecticut on Sunday, January 27, 2013

I had the Image B4s but swapped them out for these due to lack of bass in the B4s and a desire for more clarity. I was not disappointed. These have amazingly clear and tight bass that goes deep enough that a sub is not needed. It is not bloaty or boomy. With an amp with tone control, you can even feel the bass. These are absolutely amazing. The imaging is great. The only downside is the treble is very slightly rolled off.
    Pros:
Clarity, tight and articulate bass, size, very musical but not colored
    Cons:
    Slightly rolled off treble

    PSB IMAGINE MINI

Written By Bill S, Pasadena, CA on Sunday, May 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a pair of PSB Imagine Ts in the past, so between my own experience and all the great reviews in the press, I had high hopes for the Imagine Minis. They exceeded my expectations by a longshot. The imaging and tonal balance is terrific. My wife and I just sat in amazement at what these little guys could do. I had originally planned to use them as surrounds but after auditioning them, I decided they were going into my office system, paired with a Peachtree Nova integrated amplifier.

There isn't a lot of low end, but more than I anticipated. What you do get is nothing short of amazing coming from a 4" LF Driver in a cabinet smaller than a half gallon milk container. They're not full-sized towers, so it isn't fair to compare them to something with multiple LF drivers and a high volume cabinet. However, pairing the Minis with a solid sub yields pretty magical results. I've placed mine in a bookshelf without a sub and am very happy with the results.

I recommend these to anyone seeking a small, high quality speaker.
    Pros:
Great imaging, small footprint, smooth, even tonal balance
    Cons:
A little expensive but worth it

    Took a while, but...

Written By Tom, Rochester NY on Sunday, April 08, 2012

I got these as surrounds to go along with Synchrony 2 T&C, driven by an NAD T787. Because of the odd shape of my living room, wanted more "wall mount friendly" surrounds than my old DefTech SM350s had been, and mating the Minis with the new PSB wall mount made sense. The 350s provided the fullest sound and dispersion that I'd had previously with surrounds, so I was used to that. When I got the Minis mounted, I was expecting a lot, but was initially very disappointed -- both with sound quality and achieving a decent surround effect. I was thinking that I'd made a big mistake. But I played around quite a bit with positioning them, and streamed Airplay for many hours in multi-channel stereo mode to see if breaking them in would help. It did -- after several days they opened up, and the overall sound quality was significantly better. Regarding surround sound positioning, though, these speakers are very directional (makes sense, as not much "bottom"), and thus respond quite differently with just very minor vertical and horizontal tweaks of the wall mount. I typically just use surrounds for TV/Movies, and as long as I'm close to a sweet spot, these provide good quality surround sound, can easily handle anything thrown at them from the surround channels (have them crossed over at 80Hz). Based on sound quality, these would be exceptional choices as fronts for a small system/room. As surrounds for a larger system, they're very good, but do have some limitations.
    Pros:
Sound quality, size, musical, wall-friendly with the PSB wall mount, blend in OK with Synchrony fronts & center
    Cons:
Not much low end, long break-in period, very directional

    Sound unexpected!

Written By Morton, San Francisco Bay Area on Sunday, February 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Because of its size the Mini can't be expected to produce the lowest of lows - etc - however what the Mini does is unexpected joy. Having several systems and speakers of varied size the overall pleasant neutrality of the music puts it into a niche of comfortable listening and most certianly hearing comfort not found too often in speakers larger and far more costly. Other speakers in my stable are small to large floor standers, and I must confess don't give my ears the comfort and seeming accuacy these small speakers give forth. I' m using one of my NAD amplifiers to fire them up along with a NAD and Marantz CD - Have been very pleased with Crutchfield and their return policy they give to customers, albiet, they won't see their product returned.

    I wanted to like them....

Written By Steve, Nashville on Saturday, February 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really wanted to like these speakers, they look great, feel very solidly built. The sound just was not what I had hoped....sound was somewhat empty to me, no rich warm feel. Crutch field is top notch and accepted my return.
