Why choose bookshelf speakers?

Bookshelf speakers may be small in size, but they can deliver surprisingly big sound. Some ultra-compact models even fit on a desktop. Most are right at home in tight spaces like shelves, so they're usually good choices for your home theater's rear channels. For the best performance, try placing bookshelf speakers on solid speaker stands to help the sound really "open up." If you want full bass impact, add a powered subwoofer and enjoy punchy sound that's as deeply satisfying as that of floor-standing speakers.

Our take on the PSB Image B5

by Kristen Schaub

Serious sound from compact bookshelf speakers

PSB's Image B5s deliver engaging, dynamic sound with music and movies alike. They feature an attractively compact design, making them an ideal option for a stereo setup in smaller rooms, or as rear-channel speakers in a multi-channel home theater system. The Image line borrows from driver technologies developed for PSB's sophisticated Imagine family, as well as the top-tier Synchrony speakers, giving you high-end sound at a budget-friendly price. The Image line also features a slightly different cabinet design than its predecessors, showcasing clean lines that won't clutter up your listening room.

Image family

PSB's Image speaker family (Image B5 shown second from the left)

Advanced driver for clean, well-balanced sound

K2 Power crossover network

The tweeter uses a powerful neodymium magnet for crystal-clear highs.

The Image B5s each feature a 1" titanium dome tweeter that effortlessly dishes out smooth, uncolored highs. The long-excursion, high-output woofer uses the same proprietary ceramic-filled polypropylene cone as the Imagine line. The stiff, lightweight material helps it deliver midrange that's clean and balanced, with surprisingly deep bass. You'll also marvel at the detailed imaging, and wide soundstage produced by these compact speakers.

Sleek, thoughtful cabinet design

All Image speakers have heavy internal bracing and 1-1/8" thick MDF cabinets to ensure impressively solid, acoustically inert enclosures. The cabinets have a traditional look that's softened by slightly curved panels. This family of speakers also features attractive vinyl finishes, allowing the Image speakers to easily integrate into just about any décor.

From the review TEAC AG-H380 and PSB Image B5 speakers — small system, big sound

"In the short time that I had the TEAC AG-H380 system at home, my family and I came to truly love having it in the living room. Its small size, unobtrusive good looks, and surprising sound quality won my wife over immediately. While I have no doubt that the AG-H380 could play well with other small, reasonably efficient speakers (and I know that the B5s sound fantastic with other receivers), the combination of these two together achieves such a synergy, that it almost seems as if they were made to go together."

    Driver Technology

Cone Design: The woofer cones are clay/ceramic filled polypropylene to optimize the combination of stiffness, internal damping, and low mass. The woofers' magnetically neutral polycarbonate basket contributes additional stiffness, and the bullet-shaped phase-plug enhances linearity at higher frequencies.

Tweeter: The 1" titanium dome, Ferrofluid cooled tweeters use a neodymium magnet structure to help extend the frequency response at both ends for effortless, airy top octaves and smooth, uncolored response.

Crossover Network: The crossover is a 2-way acoustical fourth order Linkwitz-Riley type with a 24 dB/octave slope. The tweeter and woofer are crossed over at 1,800 Hz.

    Connections

Dual Binding Posts: The dual binding post input terminals are located on the lower rear of the speaker cabinet. The two sets of binding posts are shorted together by gold-plated jumpers. With the jumper removed the Image B5 can be bi-wired or bi-amplified. The binding posts will accept spade connectors, single banana plugs, pin connectors, and bare wire up to 8 gauge.

    PSB Image B5

Written By RJ, Cumming,GA on Saturday, April 27, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These PSB-B5 replaced 15 year old Polk RT-5. I have a 5.1 set up. The B5 are my main R-L. Ctr is a Yamaha and the rear are Dayton. Wolf is a Polk 10. The ceilings are 12 ft high. Amp is a Denon 1912. These are really book shelf speakers. I listened to George Jones all day and these are good speakers and they fit in the bookshelf perfectly. I was a little skeptic because they were rear ports but they are great. If size is important as it was for me, get these they won't disappoint. Had to turn the wolf down. Build quality seems to better than my old Polks, look great.
    Pros:
    Great highs
    Cons:
    none

    PSB B5 Review

Written By Bill Z, Las Vegas, NV on Tuesday, January 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers to replace an old pair of Infinity Reference speakers that just didn't have the clarity I was used to anymore. I use these as back speakers in a 5.1 setup that is 90 percent used for music. I spoke to the staff at Crutchfield and they recommended the B5's based on the info I gave them. I chose the dark cherry version. I received the speakers in less than a week and it only took a couple of minutes to decide I had made the correct choice. The speakers are very solid and though a little dark in the cherry finish they look great, especially with the covers off. If you like your music crystal clear like I do then I believe removing the grills is the way to go. They fit seamlessly into the rest of my system and I couldn't be happier. I was able to get a discount for an open box unit and there wasn't a mark on them. It is great to have the Crutchfield staff just a phone call away for questions and solutions!
    Pros:
Good solid speaker Crystal clear sound Great for the price range
    Cons:
    None

One of the most musical speakers I've ever heard

Written By GabeS, Iowa on Friday, June 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a great set of bookshelf speakers for a 5.1 system, but since the room they're going in is very limited in space, they had to be small. A very tall order, but no one has a better reputation for making big-sounding small speakers than PSB (just look at their Imagine Mini's). As much as I would've loved to grab their step up Image B6's, they were just a tad too big for where they were going, so I settled on the Image B5's. The sub would reproduce all I lost in bass anyways.

I couldn't be happier. To test these, I first hooked them up to my Denon 1912, unplugged my subwoofer, and played some lossless music. WOW. These things sound huge! When I close my eyes I forget how small they are. Bass isn't comparable to having a sub, but what's there is deep and full. If you just get these for music, you may not need to add a subwoofer. The quality that struck me most was how musical the B5's sounded. The laid back highs, smooth mids, and tight bass blended so well that I just sat back and lost myself in the music. They sound so good that I'm considering replacing all my speakers with PSB's.

But before I went that far, I wanted to test them in a home theater setup. I paired them with a PSB Image C5 center speaker and Image B4's for the surrounds. I just used my existing Klipsch sub. Lo and behold, these things sound just as good on movies as they do music. Game of Thrones sounded full and epic, while Up sounded crisp and light. I can't recommend these enough. Buy them now!
    Pros:
Small, but sound much bigger. They sound equally amazing with music and movies, which isn't always the case. They look good for the wife too. Relatively cheap for a speaker of this quality.
    Cons:
Bass isn't quite as prominent as the step-up B6's. If you have a sub, this is a non-issue, if not, consider going with the B6's.

I connected these to one of my Sonos 120 (2x55W) boxes. They are an excellent as 2ch bedroom setup. Enough bass with wonderful mids and highs. I'm sure that they would be a great choice for a multi-channel system with the addition of a sub.

    PSB Image B5 Speakers

Written By JoeR, Bothell, WA on Saturday, February 12, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PSB Image B5 Speakers are reviewed elsewhere as excellent speakers for their size. After installing them as front speakers for an audio/video system, I agreed with everything I read about these speakers. I feel, for this price range, you cannot do much better. They are great for 2 channel audio, or as part of a 5 channel surround sound system.
