Polk Audio

Floor-standing speakers — still standing tall

Sure, floor-standing tower speakers buck the industry trend toward smaller, visually inconspicuous speakers, but they're hard to beat if great sound is your primary goal. Tower speakers produce powerful sound with excellent bass, making them a great choice for serious music lovers and for folks who want high-impact home theater.

Our take on the Polk Audio RTi A7

by Loren Barstow

Great-sounding and great-looking

Serious music listeners and home theater buffs alike will appreciate Polk's newly designed RTi Series tower speakers. The RTi A7 offers top-notch sound quality, and its curved edges and real wood veneer give it a handsome, refined look.

A high-tech approach to accurate sound

< Cross-section

Polk's PowerPort helps extend the speaker's frequency range.

This speaker's carefully designed drivers undergo laser testing to help identify and eliminate resonance points, ensuring smooth, accurate response. Its asymmetric cabinet helps it deliver rich, clear sound by combating vibration and increasing rigidity. Polk's exclusive PowerPort® technology reduces noisy air turbulence and increases low-frequency output. You'll enjoy clear highs, rich bass, and open, natural-sounding midrange.

Additional high-end features

Two sets of gold-plated five-way binding posts let you biamp or biwire the RTi A7 for the best possible sound. An anti-diffraction grille helps it deliver a large, three-dimensional soundstage with pinpoint-accurate stereo imaging. Adjustable spikes provide stability on both carpeted and hardwood floors.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi A6.
Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi A3 or FXi A6.

    Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features two 7" polymer composite woofers. Two 7" woofers have the surface area of a single large woofer with the low mass and acceleration of small woofers, resulting in tighter, more accurate bass response. Each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Polymer Composite Midranges: The speaker has one 6-1/2" polymer composite midranges for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, the midrange uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a single 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter features mylar bypass capacitors in the crossovers to extend high frequency response and improve detail and transparency. The tweeter also features low viscosity ferro-fluid cooling with a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

    Enclosure Design

Damped Asymmetric Hex Laminate (DAHLI) Cabinet Design: All-MDF construction with massive asymmetric cabinet bracing ensures a resonance-free enclosure for accurate sound. The asymmetric design is made from a 6-layer laminate with 5 viscous layers to create the optimal shear damping (OSD) system. The elegant styling aside, curved cabinets not only result in a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure, but the curved walls also produce less audible coloration from panel resonances.

Power Port Venting System: The speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Acoustic Resonance Control (ARC): Internal cabinet resonance can impart a "thick" character to voices. Polk's patented Acoustic Resonance Control port system overcomes this problem. In addition to the Power Port venting system, each speaker has a front-firing port that is tuned to suppress the internal cabinet resonance, resulting in smooth, natural midrange reproduction.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

    Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

    Mounting Options

Adjustable Leveling Spike Feet: The adjustable leveling spike feet that can be screwed onto the bottom of the speaker's attached base provide stability on any type of flooring. The spike feet adds approximately 0.875" to the speaker's overall height when screwed all the way in.

    Specifications & Dimensions

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 20Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 35-26kHz.

Width: The main body of the speaker is 8.6875" wide but the speakers attached feet extend beyond each side of the speaker, giving the speaker and overall width of 10.6875".

    Great I Think

Written By Ray, Gilbert, AZ on Tuesday, April 16, 2013

I hope I can change to a 5 after some time passes but I've been using since 2/20/2013, so in 2 months of daily use they don't seem to have mellowed. A little bright, and bass is disappointing but I use a sub. Detail and high end is astounding, but these replaced some 15 year old Infinity studio monitors that were beasts at about 70 lbs each, and I have lost some depth. Do these need 300 hours to break in???seems excessive

    Absolutely Phenomenal

Written By LoRo P, Lynchburg, VA on Tuesday, April 09, 2013

These speakers sound absolutely phenomenal, the sound quality is superb, the look is stylish and well designed and the price is cozy. My system compromises of an HT Omega sound card (if your using a PC as your source definitely look into this puppy) hooked up to a Yamaha R-S700 (I much prefer Stereo over surround, the quality of sound is unsurpassed) and then into a pair of these and a Polk DSW 660wi, and when it was first played, I was blown away. Listening to FLACs on this system is like listening to music for the first time ever, 24bit remasters of The Doors and The Beatles are beautiful and psychedelic as ever, Led Zeppelin shakes the floor and Pink Floyd brings in another dimension. If you are considering these for your system, give them a listen and decide for yourself, I'm sure you'll fall in love just as I did.
    Pros:
    Great look, sound and price
    Cons:
None really, covers are a bit cheap and will break easily, keep that in mind when handling them if you plan to use those covers, they do defend against kittens though, thank god!

    Possibly My Last Speakers

Written By Ron, Mount Washington, KY on Wednesday, March 13, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I prefer music in 2-channel stereo so I need speakers that produce enough bass on their own. With some material the bass is lacking but that's not a reflection on the A7s. Music from the last decade or so usually has a much heavier bass line than something from the 80's or earlier. Sometimes I add a little bit of sub to round out the bottom but if strong bass is there to begin with they shake the floor without it. I drive them with a 100-watt Sony STR-DG2100 receiver. They are bi-amped using the surround back channels and the bottom end does sound a little more full. The sweet spot to fill my living room (20 x 20) at a moderate level is around -20db. I would not drive them with anything smaller but a high quality 100-watt receiver will do the job. These speakers are very detailed. You will hear things you have never heard before. I have been listening to Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" since it was released and for the first time I can hear the "pin prick". These speakers bring out the best and worst. Music with a lot of dynamic range will give them more to work with. If it's a poorly produced or highly compressed track you will know it. The A7s are audiophile grade speakers so your source material makes a big difference. Having a warm sound was high on my list and I can listen for hours without any ear fatigue. Thanks to Polk for sticking with a soft dome tweeter. You can spend a lot more on speakers but I can't image why you would. The A7s might be the last speakers I buy.

    Excellent

Written By Skip, Dayton, Ohio on Tuesday, March 05, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are upgrades from the Polk TSi300, which I have moved to be the surround left and right speakers. The RTi A7's have excellent sound all the way through the spectrum. I have these for the front left and right in a 7.2 system with an Onkyo TH-NR809 AV receiver. These two speakers and the center channel speaker are powered by an Emotiva XPA-3 (200 (at least) REAL watts of clean power times 3). The RTi A7's handle the "real" power with ease. They really sing at higher volumes. They were somewhat "bright" at first, as many others have mentioned, but do sound better with age. They have a very nice visual appearance as well. I would recommend these speakers.
    Pros:
Excellent sound and nice to look at.
    Cons:
    None

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice looking speaker, well built, and very good sound. Still breaking them in, but impressed with the sound out of the box. Replaced a 20+ year old set of Polk S10's and it is quite an improvement. Bass response not fantastic, but meshed with a sub these sound very good. Happy with my purchase. I know the review is supposed to focus on the product, but I also need to comment on Crutchfield. Ordered the speakers on Friday, got them on Monday. Awesome! Also had to return a subwoofer and it was a simple process. Great place to purchase electronics.
    Pros:
Great overall sound, well built, nice looking.
    Cons:
    Could use more bass.

    A7 Heaven

Written By 'Strings, Tampabay, FL on Monday, February 18, 2013

I've had my A7s for about three years and thay have always performed well. They also present themselves well visually - more like nice furniture. Originally, I powered them with an Onkyo 707 receiver. They sounded great. A year later I added a NAD T955 amp. They sounded really great. Last month I swapped out the Onkyo/NAD 'engine' for an even stronger Marantz MM7055 amp fed by the Marantz AV7005 processor. Now with 145 W/Channel the A7s have hit their stride. Though planning to replace them with new A9s this year I'm really struggling to justify the change!
    Pros:
These speakers definitely like power and reward you accordingly.
    Cons:
For my application they have none.

Beautiful to look and sounds very nice for the price. They lack a little of the punch of my old Bostons and don't quite live up to my friends Focal's but hey they were half as much as though speakers too. Pretty decent clarity and they fill the room. For the money these are a screaming deal.

    RTiA7

Written By Mike, Munroe Falls, Ohio on Saturday, May 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have been researching replacing an old set of Polk's for quite a while. Looked locally at some Paradigm that were very nice but a lot more money, and the guy from the store never got back in touch with me so... I bit the bullet on the RTIA7's and have NO regrets. The purchase & delivery were Crutchfield class all the way. Installation was a breeze, as I had time to get all the wiring issues (Bi- Amped) prior to their arrival. Had them up and running within an hour of delivery. I have been delving into all of my music hearing it as never before. The soundstage is dramatic, at whatever volume I listen to them. They seem to be getting better as they are breaking in. Also purchased the CSiA6 center speaker, and it is a BEAST size wise but does great across the front. The wife always griped about my previous center channel speaker and this is twice the size but the installation was planned better and seems suspended in mid air. The hometheater experience is breathtaking. Am saving up to purchase surround speakers to finish off my 7.1 set up. NO REGRETS!!!
    Pros:
Cherry Finish is impeccable, and look is breath taking. Bi-amping is the way to go.
    Cons:
Thought size would be an issue but isn't just more to appreciate!!

Have had these speakers a couple weeks now and, as others have noted, they seem to getting better now that they are broken in. They are much more warm and mellow than my HTIB speakers were. I have them bi-amped and am still using my old center and surrounds. Overall the sound picture is very nice
