Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Our take on the Polk Audio DSW PRO 550wi

by Kristen Schaub

Feel the rumble in your movies with this powerful subwoofer

Pump up the excitement on movie night with the Polk DSW PRO 550wi. It sports a 10" woofer driven by a muscular 200-watt amplifier that'll make your hair stand up during intense action sequences. This advanced subwoofer features Polk's exclusive Feed Forward™ technology, which reduces audible distortion without limiting volume. You get quick, precise response throughout the sub's entire frequency range, even at wall-shaking volume levels.

Sounds great no matter where you place it

remote

The PRO 550wi also includes the Polk Room Optimizer™, an ingenious feature that lets you specify the location of your sub with one of four options — corner, mid-wall, in-cabinet, or mid-room. The Optimizer then automatically equalizes the sub's response to ensure smooth, clean bass from that position. You can easily access this function, as well as the volume control and phase switch, with the included remote, so you can fine-tune the bass from your favorite listening spot. Removable feet let you position the PRO 550wi for either front-firing or down-firing operation, whichever you prefer.

Highlights:

  • 200-watt RMS Class D amplifier
  • 10" down-firing woofer (feet can be repositioned for front-firing operation)
  • bass-reflex (ported) enclosure
  • Feed Forward technology maximizes output and improves dynamic performance

    Features

Driver: The DSW PRO 550wi uses a 10" Dynamic Balance composite polypropylene cone driver for deep, accurate response with low distortion. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer utilizes a rubber surround.

Klippel Optimized Woofer: By using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk Audio is able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance even at extreme listening levels.

Class D Amplifier: The subwoofer is powered by a high-current Class D amplifier producing 200 watts RMS power (400 watts Dynamic power) that supplies clean power for loud bass and a wide dynamic range necessary to recreate a life-like experience in your home. The efficiency of a Class D digital amplifier translates into high-power, and cool, reliable operation with low distortion.

Feed Forward Distortion Suppression Technology: This technology maximizes acoustic output as it reduces audible distortion. Feed Forward is a zero latency system that maximizes dynamic output of the subwoofer system without relying on slow responding feedback techniques. What you'll hear is quick, precise bass output with minimal audible distortion, even at loud volume levels.

Enclosure: The DSW PRO 550wi features a bass-reflex enclosure with non-resonant MDF construction and internal bracing for deep bass impact with superior detail and accuracy. The subwoofer's enclosure's durable onyx black finish can be painted to match your room decor, if desired.

Downward Radiating Slot Port: The DSW PRO 550wi features a downward radiating slot port which lessens turbulence, noise and distortion. The result is deep, clean and accurate bass.

Video Shielded: The DSW PRO 550wi is magnetically shielded for placement near video monitors. You should still allow at least 18" of space between your subwoofer and any tube television. LCD, DLP and Plasma TVs are not affected by magnetism.

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response for the subwoofer is 23-160Hz, and the -3 dB frequency response is 30-125Hz.

Repositionable Feet: The DSW PRO 550wi features repositionable rubber or spike feet which allow you to orient the subwoofer on its "back" to turn it into a front-firing woofer when you want to hide the subwoofer away in cabinets. There is an optional woofer grille (item # 107DSW500G, sold separately) available when the subwoofer is used in a front firing application.

Note: The remote control may not operate when the subwoofer is placed in a cabinet with the driver facing into the room. If this occurs, adding an IR repeater will enable the remote control to communicate with the subwoofer.

    Controls

IR Wireless Remote Control: The DSW PRO 550wi comes supplied with a credit card sized IR wireless remote control which operates the following subwoofer's controls - Volume, Mute, Phase, Night and Polk Room Optimizer. All commands are sent to the subwoofer via IR control. The IR receiver is located on the front of the subwoofer when the subwoofer is its downward firing configuration. There is a blue LED behind the woofer's logo badge which blinks to confirm the subwoofer has received and responded to the remote's instructions. The LED feature can be turned off.

Note: The subwoofers crossover setting must be set using the controls located on the rear panel of the woofer.

Polk Room Optimizer: The DSW PRO 550wi's remote control incorporates the Polk Room Optimizer (PRO) feature. The Polk Room Optimizer feature allows you to place the subwoofer where you want it in your listening room. Based upon the four most common room placements for subwoofers, the Polk Room Optimizer maximizes sound quality for you, smoothing out the bass response that a particular room placement creates. There are four push-button room equalization presets on the remote that correct for room boundary effects for typical room placements: "cabinet," "corner," "mid-wall," and "mid-room." The result is great bass performance no matter where you place your DSW PRO 550wi subwoofer.

Night Mode: Night Mode compresses the dynamic range of the woofer's output, so you hear low-level bass detail at lower volumes.

Volume Control: The DSW PRO 550wi has a push button volume control to adjust the volume of the subwoofer relative to the other speakers in the system. The volume is adjustable from 0 to 40. The blue LED on the front panel will indicate the volume level using a combination of short and long blinks. The volume can also be adjusted using the supplied wireless remote.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's IR wireless remote features a phase control which allows you to select 0-degrees (normal), 90-degrees, 180-degrees (reverse) or 270-degrees. This control enables the subwoofer to blend more seamlessly with your main speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, using the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Low-Pass Filter: The DSW PRO 550wi offers a continuously variable low-pass filter, adjustable from 60-120 Hz. The cut-off frequency must be manually set from the subwoofer's control panel.

3-Way Power Switch: The subwoofer has a 3-way power switch on the rear panel. You can select "Auto", which turns the unit on automatically when an input signal is received and off 15 minutes after the signal stops; "On", which keeps the unit on and "Standby", which turns the unit off. The LED power indicator glows green when the unit is on, red when the unit is off and yellow during standby mode.

    Connections

LFE (Unfiltered) Input: The DSW PRO 550wi has a gold-plated mono RCA LFE (Low Frequency Effects) input. This input should be used when connecting to a receiver with a filtered subwoofer output, such as those found on most home theater receivers (check the receiver's owner's manual). The LFE input bypasses the subwoofer's built-in low pass crossover.

Note: If the receiver's subwoofer output is unfiltered, you should use either the left or right Line Input of the subwoofer.

Line (Filtered) Inputs/Outputs: The subwoofer has gold plated left and right RCA Line Level inputs. The inputs are for use with electronics featuring unfiltered "Pre Out" jacks (Example: a separate pre-amp processor with a separate amplifier). It may require "Y adapters" to connect the left and right outputs of the pre-amp processor to both the subwoofer and the power amplifier. The line outputs allow you to send a filtered signal to a power amplifier to drive bookshelf speakers.

Speaker Level Input/Output: The subwoofer has 5-way binding post connections for front speaker level input and output. The subwoofer's low-pass filter takes the low frequencies (based on the setting of the filter) and sends it to the subwoofer. The speaker level outputs send a filtered signal to your connected speakers.

    Fantastic as a stereo setup

Written By Danny B, Detroit MI on Tuesday, March 19, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was going to buy only one of these but Crutchfield had a special so I bought two. Thank you Crutchfield! I wired these bad boys in stereo using the speaker level inputs to the speaker B terminals on my reviever. Works like a charm. No problems with the remote like the other reviews mention, and one remote works for both subs so if I do ever have a problem I got back up. They sound fantastic. I sware, they always give you the correct bass for whatever you may be listening too. 100% satisfied.
    Pros:
Sounds fantastic and looks great compared to others. Remote included.
    Cons:
    Nothing really.

    Polk DSW Pro 550wi

Written By Chris B, Burbank, CA on Wednesday, January 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This sub has some really good bass to help immerse you in the video. I have to admit I turn mine up to around 75% and turn up the sub level on the receiver to +5db, whereas YPAO set it to +1 db with the sub volume on 50%. The auto turn on seems to be hit or miss so I just turn it on and off as I need it. The remote included works fine for me, but I have programmed my Harmony remote so I don't use the included remote. Overall it's a very nice unit, it looks as sleek as the rest of my Polk gear, and it performs well.

so far only one star since this is the second one I have, the first one I had to return because it didn't work. still frustrated because now this second does not work, I need to call support but have not had time, but I am truly upset because last year I did my entire room over and it looks awesome. have it hooked up to denon AVR 2312CI with polk speakers. using it wireless, will call this week and see if they can help, but at this point very unhappy.

First off, I don't max out the volume when watching a movie but I do turn it up loud. This subwoofer does the job with impressing bass! I do not have any regrets buying this subwoofer! I did not use the wireless feature so I can't speak for it.
    Pros:
    Excellent bass and wireless feature

    None

    550 review

Written By el g, PA on Wednesday, October 03, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Clean, solid, and room filling. For me this was a GREAT buy. I went with the wireless kit because I would have needed over 50 ft of cable plus the room it's being used in gets rearranged for Christmas so I liked the flexibility of being able to move it wherever I want with with no real inconvenience. There are 2 problems with going wireless one is the signal so you might have to play around with placement. The other problem is if you go wireless you will have to manually turn the sub on/off everything you use it as opposed to a wired connection which has a standby mode and will turn on/off manually. Besides these 2 minor things I love this sub it shakes the house!
    Pros:
    Everything
    Cons:
Wireless can be problematic Wireless requires manuallying turn sub on/off

    Awesome Bass, Polk Quality

Written By Ron D., Union, NJ on Saturday, September 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Class D amp on this beautiful sub provides clean, earth shaking bass. The adjustments for location, phasing and volume will allow even the most critical audiophile to get it "just right". My unit is hard-wired to the LFE input, so I have no issues with wireless interference. The finish is superb, as should be expected with any product from Polk Audio. The remote control dose require line-of sight , which may be a problem for someone who has the unit stashed away behind furniture, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you want to continually tweak the settings. Overall, a highly recommended sub that will put a smile on your face. I should also add that this unit went on sale a few days after I purchased it, and Crutchfield automatically gave me a credit for the price difference on any future purchase. Another reason to go to Crutchfield first when looking for electronics.
    Pros:
    Beautiful finish, awesome performance.
    Cons:
Remote requires line-of-sight (should not be a big deal for most people).

    Big Block Engine Performance!

Written By DS, Henderson, NV on Thursday, January 26, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted the 12" DSW PRO 660 because I was replacing a 12" sub boasting 250 W RMS / 550 W Max and I didnt want a lesser experience. The 660wi is only $100 more than the 550wi but you have to set your budget somewhere so I went with the DSWPRO 550wi. Surprise Surprise this 550wi out performs the 12" Northridge E250 and I mean its not even a close contest. the 550wi has a class D amp. Theoretical power efficiency of class D amplifiers is 100%. An ideal class A B amplifier has a theoretical maximum efficiency of 78% and the Northridge E series probably would not have "ideal efficiency" so believe me when I say this 550wi has big block engine performance and these 200 Watts easily outperform the 250 watts of the 12" and I have never turned the 550wi up past 75% I'm pretty sure pictures will fall and nails will loosen from wall studs
    Pros:
Clean Powerfull Bass, Modular for down or front firing, Wireless Capable, Remote is usefull.
    Cons:
Accessories are expensive - $50 grill cover $100 wireless adaptor

    Wish remote had frequency adjuster

literally blown away when watching Blue Ray movie Thor; ground ashaking. Now listening to Jazz or regular TV, the beast is tamed and mild.
    Pros:
Range of response, and with wireless connectivity to receiver can place it anywhere. Using Crutchfield purchased Sony receiver which calibrated the 7 Polk Audio speakers, and with Crutchfield help in setting up, what more do you want? Not to mention the savings on the subwoofer!

    Subwoofer Awesome...Wireless could be better

Written By u da man, York SC on Thursday, June 30, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This subwoofer sounds incredible. My 4-year old girl told me that she could feel the music with her entire body. Watching movies with the subwoofer is the only way to watch movies. I subtracted one star from rating because of the interference on my subwoofer via the wireless connection when my receiver and other electronics are turned off. However, the wireless connection is the only setup for my subwoofer that my wife would tolerate. She did not want to see wires or the subwoofer in our room. I have the subwoofer tucked away where you can not see but you can most definitely feel. So far, I am very pleased with my purchase. I would buy it again. I hope this review helps.

doesn't look like much when I pulled it from the box but once I hooked it up and played a movie, I couldn't believe the rumble from this thing. The bass sounds great from anywhere in the room. I actually had to turn it down a little. The performance is great. I have the soundbar 50 that I run with it. Together they are awesome. Music also has a nice thump to it. Great product.

Right out of the box, I wasn't sure what to make of this sub. but once I put it together with the Polk RTiAs A9s, it was like the icing on the cake. Testing it out with some BD movies with heavy sound fx, you can really hear and feel the base pulsing from the powerful sub.

    Awesome Subwoofer!

This sub is awesome! It goes great with my Polk TL250 speakers and Yamaha RX-V667 receiver. The bass is tight and it drops very low. It creates a low vibration you can feel in the floor. The remote comes in very handy at night, when you need to limit the bass. I would highly recommend.
