Polk Audio

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Our take on the Polk Audio MM1040

by Gabrielle Thorndyke

Polk Audio's Mobile Monitor Series subwoofers bring out superior performance from lighter materials, so you'll get the impact you want without the extra weight of a conventional system. Advanced engineering and optimized components reproduce your sound with uncompromising accuracy, for low end that is rich and clear.

The MM1040 10" 4-ohm subwoofer handles up to 350 watts RMS. A copper voice coil and neodymium magnet motor drives the polymer cone with exceptional efficiency. The carbon composite basket features a "wagon wheel" design that resists flexing during heavy excursion, so your sub hits solidly without distorting.

This sub is certified for marine use, and Polk includes corrosion-resistant stainless steel mounting hardware.

Highlights:

  • 10" 4-ohm subwoofer
  • polymer cone with butyl rubber surround
  • carbon composite basket
  • certified for marine use
  • optional matching grille complements the basket design

    Enclosure Compatibility

    Features

Klippel Optimized: Using a state-of-the-art Klippel Distortion Analyzer, Polk engineers were able to optimize the woofer's motor structure, voice coil alignment and suspension for the best possible performance, even at extreme listening levels.

Polymer Woofer Cone with Butyl Rubber Surrounds: The Polymer Woofer Cones and Butyl Rubber Surrounds will not break down over time and will survive the rigors of harsh automotive environments.

High Temperature Copper Voice Coil (50mm) and Polyamide Former: High Temperature 50mm Copper Voice Coil and Polyamide Former withstand the most rigorous use while maintaining extremely low distortion for bass punch and output.

Carbon Composite Basket: The woofer's carbon composite basket is lightweight and will not flex during music audio peaks.

Nickel Plated Heavy Duty Input Terminals: Nickel plated heavy duty input spring-post terminals accommodate speaker wire up to 8 AWG or twisted pairs of 12 AWG.

Preconditioning Period: Mobile Monitor subwoofers will achieve even greater performance once they are thoroughly broken in. To break in your new MM subwoofer, play 20 to 30 hours of music at moderate levels.

Marine Certified Woofer: Polk MM Series woofers are built to withstand exposure to moisture and UV rays, so they work well in boats and cars. They also include stainless mounting hardware for corrosion and rust resistance.

    Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 0.66 cubic feet.

Recommended Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an ideal internal volume of 1.0 cubic feet using a slot port measuring 13.5" wide x 1" tall x 20" deep.

    Excellent price versus performance

Written By Steve, Phoenix, AZ on Monday, May 07, 2012

I bought two of these hoping they would sound as good as my Polk door and rear deck speakers and they do. They produce clean punchy bass and get down low. They also have a high sensitivity rating which makes them sound louder than a typical 350 watt subwoofer. They do require about a 30 hour break in period before they sound there best. When I first hooked them up I just thought they were okay but after that time period they started to rock.
    Pros:
    clean, articulate, punchy bass
    Cons:
at this price you cannot complain

    Great Polks

Great sounding subwoofers! The sound quality is definitely there. Plenty loud enough for, I'm not trying to win any db contests. My amp is under rated for these subs, can't wait to get a new amp.
    Pros:
Small but loud. Don't take a lot of space. Price! Looks! Quality .
    Cons:
    I didn't buy them sooner

    Impressive range

Written By Art, Raleigh, NC on Friday, May 04, 2012

Over all, I am quite pleased with this sub. I needed a driver that was relatively shallow (when compared to some of the other 10" subs sold here) as it went into a custom MDF and fiberglass enclosure that fits snugly into my spare tire. Total enclosure volume came out to .7 cubic feet and I stuffed it with ~10oz of poly-fill. I'm driving the sub with an Eclipse XA1000 in a 2-ohm wiring configuration. Polk recommends 20-30 hours of break-in time before the sub will reach full excursion potential. That being said, I'm still quite impressed with how low it can extend and how hard it is willing to punch. I turned the bass boost down to +3db and gain down to about half on the amplifier to prevent over-powering the sub and to try and match it to the rest of the system (stock Bose system in a MazdaSpeed 3) Base in the sealed enclosure is very tight and responsive.
    Pros:
Good build quality. Decent power handling. Relative shallow. Good frequency response.
    Cons:
Outer lip of the driver is not "standard" dimensions requiring some "adjustment" of my enclosure with a recessed mounting hole. This is more on me however as I should have waited for the driver to come in before cutting and routing the enclosure.

    Polk Audio MM1040

Written By gerard, Bakersfield, CA on Sunday, April 15, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

All the reviews are true. High quality sound. It plays low bass notes very accurate and clean. Compared to JL10W1 which I first ordered and returned, MM1040 sounds much better. The bass blends very smoothly with my MM6501 front speakers . Im very satisfied. Crutchfield return policy is amazing.
    Pros:
    Accurate clean bass.
    Cons:
    Speaker grill sold separate.

    Much better than other subwoofers

Written By Audio Nut, Woodbine, Maryland on Sunday, March 18, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Polk MM1040 subwoofer is better than the $1000 24" unit I had previously! It hits much harder, and goes as low. I have two of the MM1040 in my sound room, and one in my car, and may yet get another for the TV sound - it is that good. In rock music I can hear differences in how the drummer strokes the drum, how bass guitarists make short distinct fast runs of notes, and in little "pre-notes" that precede the main bass note. In some current pop music I can hear differences in the synthesizer bass as it changes character during the course of a song. I have heard improvement even on ancient 1950s blues music! The technical explanation for this is that the speaker has a Qts of 0.45 with a very small Vas of 18 liters, which is difficult and expensive to achieve. This allows it to be placed in a small pre-made 0.85 cu Ft box (Parts Express) and stuffed with 1.75 Wal-Mart fiberfill pillows to achieve an ideal Q of 0.577 for the entire system. The result is very low, hard hitting, and tight bass. A smaller box will increase the Q above 0.577 and change the rolloff that must be compensated.I have achieved flat bass, using a signal generator, to 24 Hz in my 2000 Explorer due to the "room gain" of the cabin. I can only discern pitch to about 27 Hz; below that it is mainly a shaking feeling.
    Pros:
With some boost I could get to 18Hz (lower limit of generator), but it felt the same as 24 Hz. There was no buzzing, doubling, or any other sound than what was coming from the generator, and things rattling in the glove compartment. In my listening room, I added bass boost to compensate for the predicted rolloff, and achieved equally low bass, which rattled the window springs!
    Cons:
It should be noted that the lowest pitch of a standard bass guitar is 40 Hz; drums are about 28Hz, the lowest 16' organ pipe is 32 Hz, and a (rare) 32' organ pipe is 16Hz. Most synth pop music goes no lower than 30 Hz. So this subwoofer in my car covers all notes except maybe 32' organ pipe. I would try to use this subwoofer . The larger models also have a low Qts, but a larger Vas, which will require a bigger box to achieve the ideal Q of 0.577.

    Great Sub

Written By Buzr, AK on Saturday, February 25, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to put in a MTX Thunderform and it is amazing. It handles and sounds like a dream. It goes much lower than I thought it would and the form factor makes it a perfect fit for a MTX Thunderform for smaller trucks. I'm used to two 12's or two 10's and this one 10" sub is on par with what I used to run. I love Polk and this is a truly great sub.

Also - my experience with Crutchfield was my best customer experience with any vendor in as long as I can remember. They answered all of my questions before I purchased my items and followed-up multiple times after. It seriously doesn't get any better than this in terms of customer experience. I'm so used to companies that don't care, and this goes for any type of store, but Crutchfield is in a world of it's own.
    Pros:
    Size, sound, quality, design.
    Cons:
    Wasn't free

    Amazing Sub

Written By Steve, Macon GA on Monday, March 21, 2011

Bought just 1 MM1040 for my 2001 GMC extended cab truck. I am driving it with a Lightning Audio LA-600M mono block amp. Even though amp is rated at 400 watts in mono block, and the speaker is only rated at 350 watts, I've had no problems what so ever. The sound is incredible. This one sub sounds better than many 2 sub systems I've heard. Hits really hard with no distortion. I've got it in a small non-ported wedge box under the back seat. Still can't get over the power of such a shallow sub. I'm so impressed, i'm going to get two of these and a 1,000 watt amp for my Mustang convertible.

These 10's Really Lower The Boom!

Written By Ronny, Lexington, KY on Monday, February 14, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This particular subwoofer, the 10" Polk Audio MM1040, is rated to handle up to 350 watts RMS. They have a relatively high SPL, 91dB, and their excursion (Xmax), 25mm, is more in line with 12" or even some 15" subs. These subs can really move some air!

At the time of purchase, I was considering Alpine Type R's, Rockford-Fosgate P3 shallow, and Boston Acoustics G3's, along with the MM1040's. Because they would have limited airspace and mounting depth, neither the Type R's nor the G3's would fit, leaving it between the Rockfords and these. Both were on sale so the price would be about the same. Listening to these and the P3's at a local car audio shop, there was no question about it. The Polks sounded so much better. They go lower without a hint of distortion. I've owned Alpine, MTX, and JL Audio subwoofers that cost more but don't sound as good as these.

For the price, you'll really be challenged to find a better subwoofer. You may find ones that have better specifications on paper, and some that claim to handle more power. Certainly you'll be able to find subwoofers that cost less. But the Polk Audio MM1040 will likely have better sound, better quality, and better reliability.

    Polk Audio MM1040

Installed in F150 in custom downfiring box. .65
    Paired with polk amp.
Great for all types of music.
In case anyone was wondering the xmax is 1 inch, a full inch! This caused some problems with the sub bottoming out on the floor when it hit.

I'm very pleased with these polk mm 10 incher. It does not have the output of a JL 10w3 and the sound quality is similar to a IDQ10. Overall its a great sounding sub and it is nicely built and priced right.
The shallow mounting depth and a .66cuft sealed enclosure is a plus!
I have this powered by a C2k amplifier. Oh and I just ordered another.
    Thanks Crutchfield!

    one of the best!

Written By Chad, Wrightsville, Georgia on Monday, January 12, 2009

I reciently installed this sub with an Alpine 300 watt mono amp under the
rear seat of my F-150 in a down fire sealed custom enclosure. All I can say
is wow! I wanted a sub with more sound quality than just boom; but, I
GOT BOTH! I must admit one of the main reasons for buying this sub was
for its thin profile. (I have read some negative things about the sound
quality of shallow mount subs, and wanted to avoid a true shallow mount.)
I have installed audio systems in my vehicles for since 1992, and these
subs are by far the best I have owned. I can only imagine what the Polk
    SR series sounds like.
