Want a camera you can grow into? Try a "hybrid."

These digital cameras combine the creative options of a DSLR with portability that's more like that of a point-and-shoot. Their automatic modes will help you take striking pictures from day one without having to be an expert. However, like DSLRs, many hybrids have advanced control and processing options that you can explore for even better results as you take time to learn more about the hobby. Cameras in this class have large image sensors for beautifully detailed pictures, and feature interchangeable add-on lenses for different shooting scenarios. But their hybrid design means the camera bodies and matching lenses can be smaller, lighter, and more portable — great for snapping memorable pics when you're on the move.

Our take on the Fujifilm X-E1 Zoom Lens Kit

by Woody Sherman

The design beckons

Fujifilm tapped in to a powerful place in the global shutterbug psyche when they introduced their "X" series of retro-influenced cameras in 2011. This entry, the 16-megapixel interchangeable-lens Fujifilm X-E1, stays firmly in that well-established design aesthetic, while offering some new technological features that make this camera even more of a value than its predecessors.

Image quality and the resolution to evaluate it

The XE-1 is still using a "rangefinder" body style, similar to Fujifilm's other X-Series cameras, and it hosts a well-regarded APS-C "X-Trans" sensor. What that means for you is that the camera is primed to generate exceptional image quality. The on-board OLED electronic viewfinder features an ultra-high resolution 2.36-million dots, so you'll be able to evaluate that image quality in the field in real time. Should you wish show others what you've captured, a 460K-dot LCD display stands ready on the camera body's back.

The Fujifilm XE-1 hybrid digital camera

The Fujifilm XE-1 has classic styling and cutting-edge features

Ready when you are

Got just enough time to grab the camera for your son's first attempt at diving into the water? The X-E1 has a quick start mode that gets you ready to shoot in less than a second. A wide sensitivity range (ISO) makes this camera a perfect choice when you only have the light that's available, and when you need a little extra support, there's an on-board flash standing by.

Video chops and lens choice

Full 1080p HD video is standard, of course, and stereo audio gives your recordings a realistic sense of space. An external microphone input means you can add a specialized microphone, like a clip-on lavalier or a shotgun mic, for better, more intelligible sound in your next feature production. And Fujifilm has equipped this camera with a nicely appointed 18-55mm f/2.8-4 lens, which is more than up to your everyday photographic challenges. Plus, the family of Fujifilm X-mount lenses is growing regularly, with two new ones announced at the same time this camera was released.

    Features

Overview: The retro-looking Fujifilm X-E1 is an interchangeable lens digital camera. It has the new X lens mount, and is compatible with the new XF Fujinon fast aperture prime lenses. This package includes the XF 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 R LM OIS standard zoom lens.

Compatible Lenses: The X-E1 is compatible with the following XF Fujinon prime lenses: XF14mm F2.8R, XF18mm F2 R, XF35mm F1.4 R, and XF60mm F2.4 R Macro. These lenses offer precise control over depth-of-field and excellent out-of-focus bokeh, due to the design of the molded aperture diaphragm blades. With the optional M Mount Adapter (sold separately) you can use a wide variety of M-mount lenses from Leica, Voigtlander, Carl Zeiss, and Ricoh.

2.8" LCD Monitor: The X-E1 has a 2.8" color LCD monitor featuring approximately 460,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal and vertical coverage in the shooting mode. When shooting, you can choose from a standard display, a detailed display, or a custom display which allows you to select from up to 15 items to display in the monitor.

0.5" OLED Viewfinder: The camera is equipped with a 0.5" Organic LED (OLED) viewfinder with 2,360,000 dots. The viewfinder has a diopter correction dial that allows you to adjust the strength of the viewfinder in accordance with your eyesight.

Image Sensor/Processor: The X-E1 features a 23.6mm x 15.6mm APS-C format, X-Trans CMOS image sensor with 16.3-million effective square pixels. This is the same sensor used in Fujifilm's X-series flagship X-Pro1 digital camera. The camera uses ultrasonic vibration to clean the image sensor. In the menu, you can select sensor cleaning when the camera is switched on, switched off, or on command.

Recording Media: Still images and movies can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. No memory cards are included with the camera.

Still Image Quality: The X-E1 records still images in JPEG format in 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect ratios in three sizes and two compression ratios (Fine or Normal). In addition, RAW images can be recorded from the raw, uncompressed image data from the camera's image sensor. RAW format images must be processed on a computer using the supplied RAW File Converter application software. You can also shoot a RAW + JPEG image at the same time, with separate RAW and JPEG files recorded and stored.

    S: 1664 x 1664

HD Movies: The X-E1 can record Full HD movies in MOV format (H.264 standard) at 24 frames per second with stereo sound. Available frames sizes are 1920 x 1080 (Full HD) and 1280 x 720 (HD). The maximum movie length is 29 minutes.

Panorama: The camera is capable of taking panoramic images by panning the camera through one of two angle settings. As you pan the camera, multiple frames are recorded and automatically stitched together in the camera to create the panoramic image. The Panorama options are:

    • Panorama M:
      • Horizontal: 5120 x 1440 (7.3M)
      • Vertical: 2160 x 5120 (11.1M)
    • Panorama L:
      • Horizontal: 7680 x 1440 (11.1M)
      • Vertical: 2160 x 7680 (16.6M)

Shooting Modes: The Fujifilm X-E1 lets you set the shutter speed and aperture automatically or manually. The shutter speed and aperture settings combine for four shooting modes:

    Shooting Mode Shutter Speed¹ Aperture²
    Program AE Automatic Automatic
    Shutter Priority Manual Automatic
    Aperture Priority Automatic Manual
    Manual Manual Manual
    • ¹ Shutter Speed Options: Auto, 1/4000, 1/2000, 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, Time (selectable 2 to 30 sec), Bulb

    • ² Aperture Options: Depends upon the attached XF lens: XF18mm (F2.0 to F16), XF35mm (F1.4 to F16), XF60mm (F2.4 to F22) XF14mm (F2.8 to F22), XF18-55mm (F2.8/F4 to F22)

ISO Sensitivity: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 200 to 6400 in 1/3EV increments. Extended settings are equivalent to ISO100 (Low), ISO12800 (High) or ISO25600 (High). You can also choose an Auto ISO setting with maximum settings of 400, 800, 1600, 3200, or 6400. The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings according to the shooting conditions. The higher the sensitivity setting, the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions, however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.

White Balance: White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of lighting. You can select Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, Incandescent light and Underwater (requires waterproof case). In addition, you can measure for a white balance value or display and select from a list of color temperatures.

Film Simulation: The X-E1 can simulate the effects of different kinds of film, including black-and-white. You can select one of the following options:

    • Provia/Standard: standard color reproduction
    • Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited for nature photos
    • Astia/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
    • Pro Negative Std: a soft-toned palette. The range of hues available for skin tones is enhanced; a good choice for studio portraits.
    • Pro Negative Hi: offers slightly more contrast than Pro Negative Std, making it ideal for outdoor portraits.
    • Monochrome: standard black-and-white
    • Monochrome + Y Filter: black-and-white pictures with slightly increased contrast; tones down the brightness of the sky
    • Monochrome + R Filter: black-and-white picture with increased contrast; also tones down the brightness of the sky
    • Monochrome + G Filter: softens skin tones in black-and-white photos
    • Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone

Color Space: Depending upon how you intend to use the image, you can choose the output color space at the general sRGB setting or the broader color rendition of Adobe RGB (for commercial printing).

Exposure Compensation: Using the dedicated Exposure Compensation dial on the top of the camera, you can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3 EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in all shooting modes except Manual.

Bracketing: You can take a series of photos with varying settings for each picture. Bracketing options include:

    • AE: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots up to about 6 fps, one using the metered value for exposure, the second overexposed by the selected amount, and the third underexposed by the same amount.
    • ISO: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots, one using the current sensitivity setting, the second with the sensitivity raised, and the third with the sensitivity lowered.
    • Film Simulation: Each time the shutter is released, the camera takes one shot and processes it to create copies with the film simulation settings selected.
    • Dynamic Range: Each time the shutter is pressed, the camera will take three shots up to about 6 fps, each with different dynamic ranges: 100% for the first, 200% for the second, and 400% for the third.

Continuous Shooting: You can capture motion in a series of pictures using the Continuous Shooting mode. The camera can take pictures at 3 frames per second or 6 fps. Focus and exposure are determined by the first frame, and the flash is turned off automatically.

Multiple Exposures: You can create a photograph that combines two exposures.

Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second or 2-second self timer. The 10 second self timer is recommended for self portraits, while the 2-second self timer is used to reduce blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed.

Remote Release: The X-E1 has a 2.5mm sub-minijack connection for adding the optional RR-80 Remote Release. The RR-80 can be used to take photos when the camera is on a tripod or for long time-exposures. In addition, a standard cable release can be used when attached into the threaded receptacle on the shutter release button.

Focus Modes: The camera lets you choose how the camera focuses. You can select Single AF, Continuous AF, or Manual Focus using the focus ring on the attached lens.

Flash Modes: The X-E1 has a built-in pop-up flash. Optional flash units can also be used for additional lighting at night or indoors under low light. Red-eye removal minimizes the "red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

    • Auto: flash fires automatically as required by the shooting conditions
    • Forced Flash: flash will fire whenever a picture is taken
    • Slow Synchro: auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)
    • 2nd Curtain Sync: the flash fires immediately before the shutter closes
    • Commander: the built-in flash can be used to control optional remote flash units

Light Metering: The X-E1 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can select from three metering options: Multi, Spot, or Average.

Viewing Images: Images can be played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame options include a 5-frame cascading display (two previous and two following frames cascaded behind the highlighted image), a side-by-side two-frame display (with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3) and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.

Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search pictures by the following criteria:

    • Date: Search for photos by date
    • Face: Search for photos that include faces
    • Favorites: Search for photos by rating
    • Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type of photos: still photos, pictures taken in burst mode, or movie footage.
    • Upload Mark: Search for pictures selected for upload to a specified destination.

Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size). After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition, you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio of 3:2, and will be saved as a separate file.

Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select "Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original image.

Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide show. You can select normal playback, normal playback that zooms in on faces, or multiple pictures at once.

Printing Pictures: Using DPOF (Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:

    • Printer or Photo Lab: plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer, insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to a digital photo lab
    • Transferring to Computer: transfer the images to a computer before printing them

Power Requirements: The X-E1 is powered by the supplied NP-W126 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery. A fully-charged NP-W126 is good for approximately 350 shots. The supplied BC-W126 battery charger will charge an NP-W126 battery in about 150 minutes.

Auto Power Off Function: When the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu. Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.

X-E1 Accessories: In addition to the above-mentioned XF lenses, the following accessories are compatible with the X-E1:

    • HG-XE1 Grip

    Fuji X-E1

Written By bc, Rochester NY on Tuesday, April 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Already the owner of a Fuji XPro 1, I was pleasantly surpised by the combination X-E 1 + 18-55 mm zoom. The body is as pleasant to use as the X Pro 1, 99 % of the functions, buttons are the same. Due to the lack of optical viewfinder the XE1 is smaller, more compact, with a better screen resolution and finally a diopter-adjustment for the view-finder (brutally lacking on the X Pro 1, especially for a camera of that quality and price-what were they thinking?). Because of its compacity (and the lack of an available grip for it, as for the the X Pro 1) the XE1 is less stable to hold (but more compact). As for the the 18-55 mm zoom, it is excellent a deserves 5 stars: the fastest focusing lens in the Fuji X-system range, extremely sharp, and with image-stabilization/vibration reduction (to speak Canon/Nikon lingoes). Makes me want to throw my 18 and 35 mm away!
    Pros:
Body: Compacity, quality of viwfinder and produced images. [panorama function not as good as Sony's though-same for X Pro 1] Zoom: EXCELLENT. Sharp, fast focusing, Image Stabilization.
    Cons:
Body: needs a better grip. Improve automatic panorama capacity (Sony could do it). Lens: NONE!!

    Very nice camera

I was debating between the XE1 and the NEX6. I finally decided to get the XE1. XE1 gives you cleaner high ISO shots. Plus the XE1 gives you all the manual controls right on the body of the camera, unlike the NEX6 where you have to dig through menus just to change the shutter speed.

About the AF in low light conditions, I find if you enlarge the focus area the AF becomes better. The XE1 is a camera person's camera.
    Pros:
    Outstanding image quality
    Cons:
AF can be slow in low light conditions

    SIMPLY, MORE BEAUTIFUL

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm old !!! I started 'fiddling' with photography around 1970 and have owned both Minolta and Nikon gear. When the digital revolution began I ended the "money pit" called amateur photography and never looked back. However, I recently retired and began doing some research on digital photography. The least, I figured, there is no film with only 24 exposures to buy and I could always delete my marginal pic's. Maybe(I thought) I could finally teach myself photography without having to go to the bank for a loan. So the search began with the regular manufacturers like Nikon, Canon etc..but they all looked like the old film cameras-- bulky and awkward. I wanted none of that. Then I happened upon the mirrorless revolution and the Fuji X-E1. This is a camera of old . Built like a tank and the quality of the pic's make even me look good. I cannot stop shooting and experimenting and learning..I'm formally addicted to digital and Fuji and I haven't even begun the post processing work. Well, Fuji X-E1 you have let me know what I'll be doing for the remainder of my life
    Pros:
Quality of images creativity tremendous telephone supprt from Fuji Sexy
    Cons:
    ABSOLUTELY NONE

THE BEST CAMERA " I" HAVE EVER OWNED!!!!!!

Written By R.M. SELTZER, GARDEN CITY, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK on Friday, December 21, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH PHOTOGRAPHY SINCE 1963. I CONSIDER MYSELF AN ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHER. FOR THE PAST 6 YEARS I HAVE OWNED THE PENTAX K-10, KX, KR, K-5 AND THE K-30. THE PENTAX SYSTEM ALLOWS YOU TO USE MUCH POST PROCESSING BUILT INTO THEIR CAMERAS. RECENTLY I WAS LOOKING AT MY OLDER PHOTOS TAKEN WITH FILM AND THOUGHT I MIGHT GO BACK TO A FILM CAMERA. WELL, FUJIFILM MADE THE X-E1, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO UTILIZE THEIR FILMS DIGITALLY. I FELT THIS WAS THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS [FILM GONE DIGITAL]. I IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT ONE FROM CRUTCHFIELD AND COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. THE FEEL OF THIS CAMERA IS FANTASTIC, AND BEING ABLE TO CHOOSE WHAT "FILM" TO USE IS AWESOME. SINCE I WAS ACCUSTOMED TO USING DIGITAL CAMERAS, I WAS ABLE TO TEACH MYSELF 90% OF THE CAMERA WITHOUT REVERTING TO THE HANDBOOK,WHICH I WILL USE AS NEEDED. I GAVE UP THE ART FILTERS AND IN CAMERA PROCESSING, BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT. ONE FEATURE THAT IS NOT LISTED AS SUCH IS THE ABILITY TO BEND THE FLASH BACKWARDS FOR BOUNCE FLASH. THAT WORKS EXTREMELY WELL. LET ME SAY THAT IF YOU LOVED USING FILM, BUT WANT TO GO DIGITAL BUY THIS CAMERA.
    Pros:
NEW TYPE OF SENSOR. NO ALIASING FILTER IN FRONT. EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THIS CAMERA IS ALSO POSITIVE. WHAT A PHOTOGRAPHIC TOOL!
    Cons:
    NONE

    Best camera I ever owned!

Written By BA, New Jersey on Saturday, December 08, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of research about this camera before "taking the plunge," but nothing could prepare me for actually holding it in my hands and using it. There are certain qualities about products that defy description. I already have a Fujifilm X100, and S5 Pro, so I am familiar with the company and its products. The X-E1 is just a joy to use. I can see it will become my main camera. I am already thinking about selling the others. The few little deficiencies of this camera that have been described by many, or really very minor to me, and can quickly be learned and compensated for. The camera is light and unobtrusive. It exudes quality. And, most importantly, the images it makes are superb; second to none! It may not be the most appropriate camera for someone shooting sports, but I don't shoot sports. I plan to use it as an all around travel camera, and for documenting the events of my life. I never have been a fan of video, but this camera may change that. I like that there is a stereo jack for an off camera microphone. The collection of lenses will be growing soon, and so there will soon be a lens for almost every need. Right now, I am using the 18-55mm zoom, which together with the lens stabilization, bright lens, and excellent auto ISO performance, allow me to take just about any kind of picture that I am used to taking. The only thing I really wish for now is a macro lens that will go 1:1.
