Features
Design: The Fujifilm Finepix X-S1 long zoom digital camera
has a high-quality look and feel that rivals many DSLR cameras. It has metal
dials and buttons, and a rubberized coating that gives you a secure grip. The
zoom and focus rings also have a textured rubberized grip.
Fujinon Zoom Lens: The X-S1 is equipped with an F2.8 (W) - F5.6
(T) Fujinon 26x zoom lens with a focal length of 6.1mm to 158.6mm (35mm
equivalent: 24mm-624mm). The zoom mechanism operates manually by turning the
zoom ring around the front of the lens.
Note: The camera does not allow for interchangeable
lenses.
LCD Monitor:
The X-S1 has a 3" color LCD
monitor featuring approximately 460,000 dots and approximately 100% horizontal
and vertical coverage in the shooting mode. When shooting, you can choose from a
standard display, an information display, an information off display, or a custom display.
The monitor can be tilted up or down for shooting at difficult angles.
Electronic Viewfinder: In addition to the LCD monitor, the camera
has a 0.47" electronic LCD Viewfinder with approximately 100% frame coverage and
1.44 million dots. No information
is displayed in the viewfinder. A built-in diopter
allows you to adjust the viewfinder to your eyesight, either with or without
glasses.
EVF/LCD Switch: The camera's EVF/LCD switch can be set to
Monitor, Electronic Viewfinder, or Auto Switch. When set to Auto Switch, the
built-in eye sensor turns off the monitor and turns on the viewfinder as you put
your eye to the viewfinder.
Image Sensor/Processor:
The Finepix X-S1 features a large 2/3" EXR CMOS image sensor with
12-million effective pixels. The sensor works together with the EXR Processor to
give you high quality images, Full HD Movie recording, and high-speed continuous
shooting. The EXR Processor features dual CPUs, EXR core and a Reconfigurable
Processor for HR (high resolution), DR (wide dynamic range), and SN (high
sensitivity/low noise) images.
Recording Media: Still images and movies
can be recorded onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC memory cards. The X-S1 also has an internal memory of approximately
26 MB to allow you to store a few test
images in case your memory card is full.
Still Image Quality: The Finepix X-S1 records still images in JPEG
format in 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect
ratios in three sizes (Small, Medium, and Large) and two compression ratios
(Fine and Normal). In addition, RAW images can be
recorded from the raw, uncompressed image data from the camera's image sensor.
RAW format images must be processed on a computer using the supplied RAW File
Converter application software. You can also shoot a RAW + JPEG image at the
same time, with separate RAW and JPEG files recorded and stored. The available

HD Movies: The Finepix X-S1 can record movies in Full HD
(1920 x 1080), Standard HD (1280 x 720), and Standard Definition (640 x 480) in
MOV (H.264)
at 30 frames per second (fps) with stereo WAV audio. Individual movies files cannot exceed
29 minutes in length (115 minutes for standard definition), regardless of the capacity of the memory card. A Class 4
SD memory card or higher is recommended when shooting HD or High Speed movies.
High Speed Movies: High Speed movies can be shot at 640 x 480 @70 fps,
320 x 240 @120 fps, and 320 x 112 @ 200 fps. These movies, when played back at
normal speed, show the subjects in slow motion. Individual movies cannot exceed
30 minutes in length. No audio is recorded; focus, exposure, and white balance
are not adjusted automatically.
Motion Panorama: The camera is capable of taking panoramic images by
panning the camera through one of three angle settings. As you pan the camera,
multiple frames are recorded and automatically stitched together in the camera
to create the panoramic image. The Motion Panorama 360° can be saved for playback
as a continuous loop. The Motion Panorama options are:

Shooting Modes: The Finepix X-S1 has a rotary mode dial on
the top of the camera. You have the following choices in Shooting Modes:
- P, S, A, M: The camera lets you set the shutter
speed and aperture automatically or manually in these four shooting modes. The shutter speed and aperture
settings combine for these shooting modes:

EXR: Utilizing the flexibility of the EXR
Processor, this mode can be used to automatically adjust settings to
suit the scene (EXR Auto), or manually adjust for improved clarity, less
noise, or better dynamic range (EXR Priority).

Auto: This simple point-and-shoot mode is
recommended for first-time users of digital cameras.

Advanced: The Advanced mode combines
"point-and-shoot" simplicity with sophisticated photographic techniques
as Pro Focus, Pro Low Light, or Motion Panorama 360.

Scene Position: You can set the camera according
to particular shooting conditions or a specific type of subject. Scene
Positions include: Natural + Flash, Natural Light, Portrait, Portrait
Enhancer, Dog, Cat, Landscape, Sport, Night, Night (Tripod), Fireworks, Sunset,
Snow, Beach, Party, Flower, and Text.

Custom 1, 2, 3: In the P, S, A, M, and all EXR
Priority modes, you can save current camera and menu settings and recall
them whenever the mode dial is rotated to Custom 1, Custom 2, or Custom
3.
Movies: By pressing the Movie Record
button, you can instantly begin recording movies in High Definition or
Standard Definition. Stereo sound will be recorded via the built-in
microphone, or an optional external microphone. The camera has a 3.5mm
minijack for connecting an external microphone.
Image Stabilization: The camera features optical (lens
shift) stabilization, with Dual IS Modes. In the Continuous Mode, image
stabilization is being performed at all times. In the Shooting Mode, image
stabilization is only performed when the shutter button is pressed halfway or
the shutter is released. With either option, you can select "+ Motion", which
adds another layer of image stabilization by adjusting the shutter speed to
reduce motion blur when moving objects are detected. You can choose to turn off
image stabilization, especially when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
ISO Sensitivity: The X-S1 gives you three options for setting
the ISO Sensitivity:
- Auto: The Auto settings will adjust the sensitivity settings
according to the shooting conditions. The higher the sensitivity setting,
the better the camera is at reducing blur in poor lighting conditions,
however, high settings can result in more noise in the recorded images.
- Auto (with maximum): The sensitivity is set automatically as
above, except that the sensitivity will not be raised above a set maximum of
400, 800, 1600, or 3200.
- Manual: You can manually set the camera's sensitivity to ISO 100,
200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 2000, 2500, 3200, 4000,
5000, 6400, or 12800. The image size is reduced to medium at ISO 4000, 5000,
and 6400, and small at ISO 12800.
White Balance:
White balance is used to preserve natural colors under different types of
lighting. You can select
Auto, Direct Sunlight, Shade, "Daylight" fluorescent lamps, "Warm White" fluorescent
lamps, "Cool White" fluorescent lamps, and Incandescent light. In addition, you can measure for a white
balance value or display and select from a list of color temperatures.
Film Simulation: The X-S1 can simulate the effects of
different kinds of film, including sepia and black-and-white. You can select one of the
following options:
- PROVIA/Standard: standard color reproduction
- Velvia/Vivid: a high-contrast palette of saturated colors, suited
for nature photos
- ASTIA/Soft: a soft-toned palette of less-saturated colors
- Monochrome: standard black-and-white
- Monochrome + Y Filter: black-and-white pictures with slightly
increased contrast; tones down the brightness of the sky
- Monochrome + R Filter: black-and-white picture with increased
contrast; also tones down the brightness of the sky
- Monochrome + G Filter: softens skin tones in black-and-white
photos
- Sepia: takes pictures in sepia tone
Color Space: Depending upon how you intend to use the image,
you can choose the output color space at the general sRGB setting or the broader
color rendition of Adobe RGB (recommended for commercial printing).
Exposure Compensation: Using the dedicated Exposure
Compensation dial on the top of the camera, you
can alter the exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures
brighter or darker. You can adjust the exposure a total of 13 steps from -2.0 to +2.0 EV in 1/3
EV steps. Exposure compensation is available in all shooting modes except
Manual, Auto, EXR Auto, and Fireworks scene mode.
Continuous Shooting: The Continuous Shooting mode includes
two burst modes and four bracket modes:
- Top: You can shoot continuously at a maximum burst speed of 10
frames per second (at M size) or 7 fps at full 12-megapixel resolution (L
size). You can also select a frame rate of 5 fps or 3 fps. Maximum number of
frames is 200.
- Best Frame Capture: The Best Frame Capture mode lets you take a
series of pictures starting before and ending after the shutter button is
pressed. You can choose the frame rate (10, 7, 5, 3 fps) and number of shots
(16 or 8). If shooting in RAW or RAW + JPEG, the maximum number of shots is
8.
- AE bracket: 3 frames (selected exposure, overexposure,
underexposure)
- ISO bracket: 3 frames (selected sensitivity, sensitivity raised,
sensitivity lowered)
- Film Simulation: 3 frames (PROVIA, Velvia, ASTIA)
- Dynamic Range: 3 frames (100%, 200%, 400%)
Self-timer: The camera gives you the choice of a 10-second
or 2-second self timer. The 10 second self timer is recommended for self
portraits, while the 2-second self timer is used to reduce blur caused by the
camera moving when the shutter button is pressed. In the burst mode, the camera
will record five photos when the timer expires to improve your chances of
getting the desired results in self timer mode.
Focus Mode: The camera has a 3-position focus mode selector
next to the lens on the front of the camera. The following options are
available:
- Single AF (AF-S): Focus locks while the shutter button is pressed
halfway. Good for stationary subjects.
- Continuous AF (AF-C): The camera continually adjusts focus to
reflect changes in the distance between the camera and the subject. Good for
moving subjects.
- Manual Focus (MF): Focus manually using the sub-command dial on
the back of the camera. The LCD monitor indicates the focus distance range
(in meters or feet) and the depth of field.
Focus Range: The camera's focus range is approximately 0.9'
to infinity in Wide Angle, and 6.5' to infinity in Telephoto. In the Macro mode,
the focus range is approximately 0.2' to 9.8' in Wide Angle, and 6.5' to 11.4'
in Telephoto. In the Super Macro mode, the focus range is 0.3" to 3.2'.
Super-Intelligent Flash System: When the flash is used, the
Super-Intelligent Flash System instantly analyses the scene based on the
brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the
camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted to ensure that the main
subject is correctly exposed while preserving the effects of ambient background
lighting, even in dimly-lit indoor scenes. You can use the built-in flash, or an
optional external flash unit, like the Fujifilm EF-42 or EF-20.
Flash Modes: The
Finepix X-S1 has a built-in manual pop-up flash with an effective range of 0.9' to
26.2' in Wide Angle, and 6.5' to 13.1' in Telephoto (sensitivity Auto (800)). Red-eye removal minimizes the
"red-eye" effect, and is available for each flash mode. You can choose from the following flash modes:

Auto: flash fires
automatically as required by the shooting conditions

Forced Flash:
flash will fire whenever a picture is taken

Slow Synchro:
auto flash combined with slow shutter speeds (tripod recommended)

Suppressed Flash (Off): flash does not fire, even when the
subject is poorly lit.
Light Metering:
The X-S1 uses 256-segment, TTL (through-the-lens) metering, where the camera
automatically assesses the scene and selects the optimum exposure. You can
select from three metering options: Multi, Spot, or Average.
Viewing Images: Images can be
played back one-at-a-time or in a variety of multi-frame views. Multi-frame
options include a 5-frame cascading display (two previous and two following
frames cascaded behind the highlighted image), a side-by-side two-frame display
(with smaller thumbnails of the previous and next frames, 9-image grid (3 x 3)
and a 100-image grid (10 x 10) of micro-thumbnails. In the 9- and 100-image grid
views, the highlighted image is slightly enlarged.
Image Search: The Image Search function lets you search
pictures by the following criteria:
- Date: Search for photos by date
- Face: Search for photos that include faces
- Favorites: Search for photos by rating
- Scene: Search for photos that match a selected scene
- Type: You can easily search your pictures according to the type
of photos: still photos, pictures taken in burst mode, or movie footage.
- Upload Mark: Search for pictures selected for upload to
a specified destination.
Playback Zoom/Cropping: You can
enlarge a still image in the monitor according to the image quality (size).
After you have zoomed in and scrolled the picture to the desired composition,
you can create a cropped image of a picture. Copies will have an aspect ratio
of 4:3, and will be saved as a separate file.
Resize: To create a small copy of a picture, you can select
"Resize" from the menu. The new images vary in size with the original
image.
Slide Show: You can view pictures in an automated slide
show. You can select normal playback, normal playback that zooms in on faces, or
multiple pictures at once.
Printing Pictures: Using DPOF
(Digital Print Order Form), you can designate which images to print, and whether
to print them with or without date. Pictures can be printed as followed:
- Printer or Photo Lab:
plug the camera into a Pictbridge-compatible printer,
insert the memory card into a compatible printer, or take the memory card to
a digital photo lab
- Transferring to Computer:
transfer the images to a computer before printing them
Power Requirements: The
Finepix X-S1 is powered by the supplied NP-95 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery
(3.6V/1800 mAh).
A fully-charged NP-95 is good for approximately 460 shots using the LCD monitor
or 500 using the electronic viewfinder. The supplied BC-65N
battery charger will charge an NP-95 battery in about 210 minutes.
Auto Power Off Function: When
the camera is operated on battery power, the Auto Power Off function will automatically
turn off the camera to reduce the drain on the batteries if no
operations are performed for 2 minutes or 5 minutes, as set in the menu.
Regardless of the option selected, the camera will not automatically turn off
when connected to a printer or computer, or when a slide show is in progress.
X-S1 Accessories: The following accessories are available for the
Finepix X-S1:

Digital In/Out: The Finepix X-S1 features a Mini-B 2.0 jack
for connecting the supplied USB cable. This output allows you to download your
photos to your computer via USB, or connect the camera to a compatible
PictBridge printer.
HDMI: The camera has a mini-HDMI (Type C) output for
connecting the camera to your HDTV. An optional mini-HDMI to HDMI cable is required.
A/V Out: The camera also has a 2.5mm sub-minijack for use
with an optional Audio/Video cable for connecting to a non-HDTV. You can select
NTSC or PAL output with monaural sound.
