Who needs a portable navigator?

Portable GPS puts you in touch with the world when you're on the road. Tap the restaurant icon, and it asks you what kind of food you're looking for. Type in "Mexican," and you're eating a burrito before you know it. A portable navigator not only gets you to your destination, it can also find museums, theaters, and other spots along the way. Many navigators receive traffic reports, so you can avoid jams. Other cool features range from hands-free calling to 3D graphics and lane guidance. Best of all, you can move a portable easily from car to car, a big plus for multi-car families.

    Navigation Features

Map Software: The nüvi 1490-LMT comes loaded with City Navigator North America NT 2011.10 software, which contains mapping detail of the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The maps feature nearly 6-million points of interest (POIs), such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and attractions.

Free Lifetime Map Updates: The Garmin nüvi 1490-LMT includes free lifetime map updates which give you the most up-to-date maps for the life of the Garmin GPS unit. You can activate your free lifetime map updates service at www.mygarmin.com and download up to four map updates per year as soon as they become available. It can only be used for this Garmin GPS unit. Due to limited built-in memory and the possibly increasing size of the map updates, an optional microSD card (2 GB or larger) may be required.

Note: Free Lifetime Map Updates entitle you to receive up to 4 map data updates per year, as updates are made available on the Garmin website, for this specific Garmin product only until this product's useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map data from its third party supplier, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive will be updates to the geographic map data included with your Garmin product when originally purchased.

microSD Memory Slot: The nüvi 1490-LMT has a microSD memory slot for additional map data from optional microSD memory cards. The unit can also display photo images from a microSD memory card.

Antenna: The unit has a built-in antenna in its top panel. In order to obtain an optimal signal, the unit must have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. It the unit is mounted in a vehicle with a coated windshield or an in-screen heating system, there may be difficulty in obtaining a good signal.

Touch Screen Display: The unit features a bright, 5" (diagonal) LCD with touch screen controls. The display has a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and 64,000 colors. The screen has a manual brightness adjustment.

Keyboard Options: The nüvi 1490-LMT gives you two options for keyboard layouts. When you are entering an address or other data, you can choose between a standard QWERTY keyboard layout or an ABCDE alphabetical layout.

Information Pages: The information provided by the nüvi 1490-LMT is found on various display screens called pages. The pages give you the following information:

    • Map:
      • Indicates real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route
      • Shows map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways and towns
      • Allows you to zoom, pan, and point using the touch screen controls
      • When you are following a route, your arrival time is displayed in the lower left corner, your current speed is shown in the lower right corner. The posted speed limit for most major roads is displayed near the lower right corner as well.
      • When you are simply driving while viewing the Map page (not following a route), your speed is shown in the lower right corner (along with the road's speed limit), the direction you are driving is shown in the lower left corner
    • Trip Information:
      • Shows current compass heading while moving
      • Indicates current speed, maximum speed, arrival time, distance and time to next turn
      • Calculates driving time, stopped time and total time
      • Displays overall distance traveled (odometer) and distance to your final destination
    • Current Route:
      • Displays a list of turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route as well as arrival information
      • Shows direction of each turn and distance
    • Next Turn:
      • Shows the next turn on the map and the distance and time left before you reach the turn

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you select "Where Am I?" from the menu, you get the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Where To?: During navigation, you can search for places by pressing "Menu", then "Where To?" You can select an Address, Go Home, Points of Interest, Recently Found, Favorites, Extras, Intersections, Cities, Browse Map, and Coordinates. You can also access Spell Name for direct entry of your new destination, or browse the map. You can search for locations near your present location (default), or select a different city, your current route, or your destination.

Custom Points of Interest: The nüvi 1490-LMT will accept custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones, and the unit can notify you as you approach one of these points. To download custom POIs, you will need the Garmin POI Loader software, available on Garmin's website.

Usage Modes: The nüvi 1490-LMT can be used in any of three usage modes: automotive, pedestrian, and bicycle.

Vehicle Icons: The default on-screen icon representing your vehicle is a blue sports car. In the menu, you can select a blue 4WD pickup truck, a blue compact car, a blue 3D arrow, a pair of boots, a large bird, or a rolling beach ball. You can also download other vehicle icons from the "Garmin Garage" website.

Map Orientation: You can select one of three map orientation displays:

    • 2D Track Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen
    • 2D North Up: two-dimensional map that constantly displays North at the top of the screen
    • 3D Track Up: three-dimensional map that constantly displays the route from top to bottom on the screen

Screen Color Mode: You can select one of three color modes for the display screen:

    • Daytime: has a lighter, brighter background
    • Nighttime: has a black background, easier to see at night
    • Auto: display automatically switches between daytime and nighttime at sunrise and sunset

Route Preferences: When calculating a route, you can select the following preferences: faster time, shorter distance, less fuel, or off road.

Lane Assist with Junction View: As you navigate your route, the unit will provide detailed diagrams of the proper lane to travel when maneuvering a complex interchange. The Junction View page will display what the actual approaching junction looks like, and arrows indicating the lane in which you should be driving.

ecoRoute: The ecoRoute feature calculates your vehicle's fuel economy, carbon footprint, and the fuel price of navigating to a destination. It also offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. Through ecoRoute's Fuel report and Mileage Report, you can track fuel usage and gas mileage during each trip. There is also a driving challenge to help you maximize your fuel economy by scoring your driving habits.

Avoidances: You can program the unit to avoid certain things that may be undesirable on your route. Examples of things that can be avoided include U-Turns, Highways, Toll Roads, Carpool Lanes, Unpaved Roads, and Ferries.

Custom Routes: The nüvi 1490-LMT allows you to create custom routes for errands, deliveries, or sales calls, and automatically sort the destinations in the most efficient order. You can save up to 10 routes, specify via points, and preview simulated turns on the unit's display.

Waypoints: You can manually mark and name any map position as a waypoint for later recall. Up to 1000 waypoints can be saved into memory.

Indoor Use: When indoors, you can activate the built-in simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites.

Tools: The nüvi 1490-LMT offers several tools you can use as you travel:

    • World Clock: The world clock allows you to display the current time for four locations throughout the world. You can also display a map of the world showing which portions are in daylight and which are in darkness.
    • Currency Converter: This feature allows you to update the currency rates manually so you are always using the most current information.
    • Unit Converter: You can convert area, distance, speed, temperature, volume, and weight.
    • Calculator: The calculator allows you to perform simple arithmetic.

Garmin Lock: Garmin Lock is an anti-theft feature. You can set a 4-digit PIN and a security location (such as your home or office). Every time the nüvi 1490-LMT is powered on, you must enter the PIN, or drive to your security location.

    Traffic Information

FM Traffic: The nüvi 1490-LMT can receive traffic information broadcast over the FM Radio Data System (RDS), when connected to the supplied Garmin GTM 25 FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) receiver. When you are in a coverage area, the traffic delays are rated by severity with color-coded icons. If you encounter severe traffic along your route, the unit will automatically recalculate the route for you to avoid traffic delays. The nüvi 1490-LMT includes a product lifetime subscription to NAVTEQ Traffic. Traffic information is available in approximately 50 North American cities.

Note: Free Lifetime Traffic Updates may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product. Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas.

    Picture Viewer

Picture Viewer: The nüvi 1490-LMT can display photo images (JPEG files). The image files must be stored on an optional microSD memory card or transferred to the internal memory.

Photo Navigation: The Panoramio (www.panoramio.com) website provides photographs that include location information called geotags. These photos can be downloaded into the nüvi 1490-LMT or microSD memory card, and the unit can route you to the location.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Communication: Many Bluetooth-capable cellular phones are compatible with the nüvi 1490-LMT allowing you to use the nüvi as a hands-free car kit. The nüvi 1490-LMT has both a microphone and speaker, so no additional equipment is necessary to integrate your Bluetooth phone. Available options will vary by phone, however, generally these apply:

    • accept or ignore incoming calls on the touch screen
    • dial your home number
    • enter a number manually
    • call a POI (Point Of Interest)
    • dial a number in your phone book
    • call a recently dialed number
    • dial a recent caller
    • send or receive text messages

Bluetooth Compatibility: Visit http://my.garmin.com/bluetooth/phones.faces for a complete list of Bluetooth compatible mobile phones.

    Mounting Options

Mounting: The unit should be securely installed when used in a vehicle. The unit comes with a mounting bracket that includes a suction cup. The suction cup can be used to mount the unit to the windshield. Once the nüvi 1490-LMT is mounted, it can be adjusted on the ball-and-socket bracket for best visibility. The unit must be installed where it has a relatively unobstructed view of the sky.

    Power Requirements

Rechargeable Batter: The nüvi 1490-LMT operates on your vehicle's battery using the included 12-volt cigarette lighter power adapter, the built-in Lithium-Ion batteries, or household current using an optional AC adapter (sold separately). The Lithium-Ion batteries provide up to 3 hours of use after a 4-hour charge. Stored data, such as waypoints or unit settings, are not lost when the unit is disconnected from a power source.

    Computer Requirements

Internal Memory: The nüvi 1490-LMT comes with an internal memory for storage of supplemental maps and photos. When the unit is connected to your computer, the nüvi 1490-LMT is recognized as a USB Mass Storage device.

Interface Capability: This unit can be connected to a PC via USB cable (not included). This USB 2.0 full speed interface allows you to download additional map information to the unit's flash memory. The unit has a standard Mini-USB Version 2.0 jack. The unit is compatible with Windows 2000 or later and Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

Worst GPS unit I have ever owned

Written By CC, CA on Tuesday, April 16, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit has great features that are rendered useless as the satellite signal is continually lost. I have never had this issue with other Garmin units. A complete waste of money and in the future I will purchase a different brand.
    Pros:
    Great features for the price
    Cons:
It loses satellite signal constantly-sometimes cannot regain signal for hours.

This was to replace a Garmin 255. I like it much better than 255. Big screen, and the power switch is a whole lot better. The up grade was slow but no big deal. Yes I would recomend this to others. This makes number 3 Garmin.
    Pros:
Large screen, push button on & off
    Cons:
    NONE so far

    Good, but wouldn't get again

Written By Eric M., Chattanooga, TN on Sunday, February 05, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was to replace a Garmin Nuvi 350 which would not turn on properly. We really liked the unit, so bought another Garmin. The Nuvi 1490LMT unit is large (larger than needed), easy to read and use. What we don't like about it. The search function takes too long, if they ever complete. The edge is shiny reflective plastic which reflects the sun into people's eyes. The traffic gives ads (we actually use the old Nuvi 350 cable to avoid this now). The speech sounds are terrible compared to the old units. There are many names for the same road, so speaking road names is more confusing than helpful. Usually they say a road you couldn't find if looking at signs. The most frustrating thing we have found is the how it handles the timezones. We live within a mile of a timezone border, crossing it all the time. The unit changes its time based on the timezone your in, and the estimated arrival time is for the timezone your going to. The unit is changing time all the time (when turning a curve on the road) and where the timezone is exactly is not known, so your guessing what time it is. Fixing the time, improved speech, and no traffic ads would be a nicer unit.
    Pros:
bright, easy to read, easy to use. Shows speed limits.
    Cons:
robotic speak difficult to understand, changing time with timezone, shiny reflects sunlight, searching for a place never returns.

I like the big screen and the lane assist. I have yet to put it to a real test.
    Pros:
Screen size, street names very large at top.
    Cons:
Unfortunately the increase in size made it difficult finding a place where it did not obstruct driving vision.

    Garmin nüvi® 1490LMT

Written By Mr Bill, Tn on Saturday, February 04, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great GPS, works well. Only a couple of things I would have different if it were up to me. Every time you power it up you have to agree to their licensing agreement. Not a big deal, just have to hit agree every time you turn it on. That seems unnecessary to me. On some of the older Garmin GPS's, you had more than two choices of voices for the unit. On this one, you only two choices, Jack or Jill. I liked to have more choices such as an Australian or English accent. That would let you change things up and not be bored with the same old voice.
    Pros:
Large easy to see screen, also easy to program

Very happy with it so far. Audio out would have been a plus. Have had it fir a few weeks and have not used it for long trips yet. Map Update was smooth but took a while.
    Pros:
Good Solid GPS. Our second Garmin.
    Cons:
Not thrilled with pop up ads. There should be an opt out feature for stuff one is not interested in. Miss some of the features of my old IQ3600

    Great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great Garmin. I've always expected great products from this company and this GPS, to no surprise, pleased me greatly. It gets reception fast, many P.O.I., great display style, and easy navigation. Very recommended, and Crutchfeild was a great source to get it from.
    Pros:
Great Reception time, Lots of Points of Interest, Easy to navigate, great larger display, and great layout for the navigation display
    Cons:
Not really any, the way I had my old one ran was with the charging cable up through the dash and the new cable has a fuse or something so I had to move it, but outside of that nothing was bad.

    Nice features for the price

Written By Debbie H, Roseville, CA on Wednesday, February 01, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first GPS that is not integrated into the car, so it took some getting used to as compared to my hard-wired GPS. I am not a fan of the high-detail 3D and much prefer very simple graphics; I have a feeling I am one of the few who feel this way! Since I tend to use the GPS for scouting out new places and not so much for finding my to specific addresses, my purpose is much different than most who use these devices. Bottom line is it works well, has lots of bells and whistles, but won't let me scan a large area without losing all meaningful road info.
    Pros:
Easy menu; pretty intuitive; some of the eco info is interesting; nice big screen. Good bang for the buck.
    Cons:
Can't see even the major roads when I pan out too far for the GPS. I have to pick up a paper map to get that perspective. My old hard-wired GPS in a Prius did that quite well. When it reestablishes satellite connection after having lost it for a minute or two, it seems to re-set things like the scale of the map. Kind of annoying.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

WARNING: THE TRAFFIC SERVICE IS FREE BECAUSE YOU ENDURE ADVERTISING POP-UPS. this is so annoying that I rarely use the traffic service [If you turn off traffic reporting, the pop-up ads disappear]. Otherwise this is a nice GPS unit. 5 stars.
    Pros:
    good unit. nice size
    Cons:
ADVERTISING POP-UPS onscreen are really bad

    GPS 1490

I give this product 100 STARS!!! This product is just outstanding! No problems whatsoever and at a low price; it is far better than any Garmin products that I ever own (and I own several of them). This was purchased just last Christmas for a gift to my in-laws and they just simply LOVED it (previous users of Magellan).
    Pros:
Easy and manageable screen display. Even my father-in-law who is 75+ years can handle this new gadget with no problem; very easy compared to the last GPS equipment they have. Now, they even love the "life time" maps and traffic update.
    Cons:
    None

I love this GPS.. It's really fast and accurate.. I have been using this for approximately 3 months now and have no issues so far. I had read about the advertisements in some of the reviews on using the traffic feature, but it does not bother at all! It's just a small heading that even does not block the map. It was a good buy and crutchfield offered a good price as well!
    Pros:
    Fast and accurate
    Cons:
    Non so far

    Big screen GPS

Great upgrade GPS for me. If you need a bang for your buck, you won't be disappointed with 1490LMT.
    Pros:
Big screen, eco route, and faster recalculation.
    Cons:
Traffic is not widely available (one big city). It can't find my friend house built in 2009 evn if I got newest map update. I guess because of Navteq. Sometimes it lost signal.

The Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT is a great GPS for a reasonable cost. After getting buying one as a gift last year (2010), I decided to get myself one. Works like a charm.
    Pros:
Does what it says, very reliable so far.

Works great. I originally bought it for my son to take to college but first used it on vacation last summer and it worked perfectly. We used it to find local restaurants and it even rerouted us around a traffic jam which prevented us from being late to a ball game. I liked it so much I bought a second one for the family car.
    Pros:
Easy to read screen. Menus are easy to follow.
    Cons:
Updates take a long time to install.
