XM

Our take on the Pioneer GEX-P920XM

by Matt Freeman

Have an XM-compatible Pioneer in-dash stereo? Connect the GEX-P920XM radio to it, and enjoy the programming variety of XM Satellite Radio in your vehicle. With your Pioneer stereo, you can then surf XM's content by channel number or category, view artist and song titles on the stereo's display, and save up to 18 channels as presets.

The package includes the cable you'll need to connect the GEX-P920XM to your stereo, plus the XM antenna you'll need to mount on your vehicle's roof in order to receive the signal.

Note: A subscription to XM is also required — learn about XM's programming. Satellite radio service is available only within Canada and the lower 48 states — not available in Hawaii or U.S. territories. Portable reception may vary by location. If you have questions about the proposed XM/SIRIUS merger, read the XM Customer Promise. To view this file, you will need the Adobe Acrobat PDF reader.

    Limited Display

Written By Jerry_L, Las Vegas, NV on Sunday, April 14, 2013

First the rebate is only for new subscriptions! Please note this before purchasing.

The display is terrible........ it is limited to 16 characters, but does not scroll. Very dated.

Works well, but would not buy except for it matched my new receiver. I would not purchase again.
    Pros:
    Matches my Pioneer Receiver
    Cons:
Limited display, rebate is for new subscriptions only.

    Excellent product!!!

Written By Marty W, Huntingdon, TN on Saturday, March 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After installing my wife's AVH-P3400BH Reciever, she was unhappy with her Starmate 8 Sirius unit hanging from her vent and the wires running to the cigarette lighter and auxilary input. I decided to order this XM unit to eliminate the Starmate. This unit did the job. Works flawlessly and it is so much nicer to have your controls all inside the Reciever itself. I ended up installing the unit under the passenger seat of her trailblazer. There was plenty of wire length to route wiring through the console and under the seat. I mounted the antenna on the roof behind the windshield. Antenna wire was not long enough to mount it in the rear of the roof like the Starmate did. Overall, awesome product. Could not be happier. Works flawlessly and eliminates the bothersome wires of the stand-alone type radio.
    Pros:
Allows clean install. Works flawlessly. All wiring except the antenna wire generous length.
    Cons:
Too large to mount behind the Reciever. Antenna wire a little short to allow different mounting locations.

Installation is very easy. A must for anybody that is tired of the same songs all day and commercials. Once you get satellite radio you never go back to plain ole commercialized radio!
    Pros:
Easy to install, unit is very small, and price.
    Cons:
Should come with all new stereos that are satellite ready.

Easy install. Works great with pioneer head unit. Great price.
    Cons:
Unit is somewhat large but was still able to hide under passanger seat.

Dedicated XM works with older head units!

Written By Dan, Simi Valley, Cali on Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Always wanted a "built in" satellite receiver to replace my original plug & play Sportster 4. I have a standard cab ranger pickup & space is at a premium. I mounted it behind the passenger seat. I still have room for an amp if I choose to add one later. This unit is easy to mount & the included control cable was plenty long for my mounting location. After all was said & done, the reception is great! Way better than the dock & play. I wish I had done this years ago!!
    Pros:
Easy to Install. Easy to setup! Easy to use. What can be better?
    Cons:
    None at all!

This product was advertised with a $50 rebate from SiriusXM. This was a replacement for the XM receiver add on for my old radio that would not work with the Pioneer AVH-P2400BT. The rebate was for a new activation not a transfer. Disappointing.
    Pros:
    Works well

    Rebate that did not apply

    Impressive

Written By geekypete, Worcester, MA on Friday, November 16, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I knew this was a dated design, and I hesitated as the satellite radio in a lot of the cars I rent has failed to impress me. Lot of dropouts and digital noise, but the wife wanted satellite in the minivan so I just put this in. It's connected to an AVH-P2400BT head unit, there is plenty of control cable and plenty of antenna lead. Maybe in a very small car it could be tough to find space - in the van I had several options. Quite simply this thing is awesome, and I completely understand why they haven't fooled with it for so long. Reception and sound are excellent and it tunes quickly when changing stations. The head unit allows storing three groups of six stations. Definitely money well spent, thank you again Crutchfield.
    Pros:
Easy Install, solid reception - can't emphasize that enough.
    Cons:
None - Pioneer nailed this a long time ago.

Great device and perfect for your Pioneer

Written By KevinP, Pullman, WA on Saturday, October 20, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great device, antenna is very small, lots of wire to place it just about anywhere. Plugs into your IP bus, Yellow wire ties into your wire harness, and that is about it. That easy. Great reception, have not had any problems with dropped signal and I live in the Palouse with lots of hills.
    Pros:
small antenna, smaller than most you see on the install videos. Easy install when used with your Pioneer stereo. Works great on hills and dips.
    Cons:
Will lose signal in long tunnels. Not a built in product so you will need to find a spot under the dash.

Quality XM Receiver fo my 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Written By Tom S, Bowie, MD on Friday, September 14, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great receiver that fits under the front passenger seat. I coupled this receiver with a Pioneer AVH-P33000 BT receiver I had purchased last year. I was using an XM MyFi but just got tired of all the little extras that I had to do for the XM to work. Now it is just start up the Tacoma and up pops the XM. . The Install was very straight forward and easy to accomplish. Installation is a lot easier with the passenger seat removed and the shifter console removed. Just make sure the battery cables are disconnected before starting any work and to reinstall the seat prior to bringing the battery back on line. The Tacoma is blessed with a large open wire raceway in the console to the instrument cluster that houses the radio, My 2009 Tacoma already has the XM roof antenna installed and I had already purchased the Toyota Lexus cable that goes from the Tacoma wiring block to the existing MyFi. I did have to cut the end off of that cable and the antenna off of the supplied cable and solder the splice of the cables to obtain one cable that went from the wiring block to the Pioneer XM receiver. This is necessary because both connections require a unique cable end.

The sound quality is excellent and the information displayed on the receiver screen is a big improvement. I also like how the presets are available with one touch of the screen.
    Pros:
Easy navigation of XM channels Easy to read XM song and artist information Easy install even for a non do it yourself owner. Great sound and channel receiving.
    Cons:
Non so far. Wish I had done this last year when I bought the Pioneer receiver.

    09 Mustang coupe install!

Written By Bill, Chesapeake, VA on Tuesday, July 31, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just finished installing this unit in my 09 Mustang Coupe. I located it in the trunk on the right hand side where the OEM Sirius receiver is at. I used the OEM antenna as well by removing the plastic plug from around the antenna connector and it then fits fine in the GEX-P920XM. I ran all the HU connections down the passenger side under carpet and trim moldings. Everything works like a champ!
    Pros:
    Easy Install, great sound quality!
    Cons:
    Unit is rather large

    Pioneer GEX P920XM

Written By Jim C, Gautier, MS on Tuesday, July 10, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Equipment is top quality. Comes with adequate length of cable to allow installation in the trunk or rear of the vehicle. If purchased with the Pioneer Radio the pictorial installation kit will get you through the job pretty good. Installation is more challenging due to the fact that you will have to find a location to mount the radio, run the cables through the paneling and trim and find a good ground. Recommend you follow the drawings and remove the panels as directed. Some components may look like you can pop them out but actually has screws inside. You may want to opt for a professional install or just cover the cord with a protective floor cover.
    Pros:
Pretty self contained install. Plugs in back of Pioneer radio and the SirusXM receiver. Mount bracket included to secure to the vehicle with screws. Sufficient cord to allow installation in trunk or rear of vehicle.
    Cons:
The dash area is minimal so you will have to mount under a seat or run the cabling through the panels and trim to the trunk/rear section. That can be intensive but the pictorial is included in the radio package. The unit cable contains the control wires and the hot voltage lead. A ground lead runs from the unit cable jack and you will have to find a good ground point to affix to near the receiver. Knowledge and use of a multimeter is recommended.

While very functional componet, however, compared to its sister Sirius product componet the size of this product is enormous.

Easy install with ample wireing althoough mounting instructions do not exist

The physical size of this product is enormous especally for 2012 technology.

-just a tad short GEX-P920XM tuner-

Written By NeilT, Tulsa on Friday, June 29, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wondered where to install it...solved by a short antenna lead... under the RH front seat in my Toyota 2004 4runner, where it performs very well, matched with a FH-P8000BT head unit. Easily installed, great quality, the very satisfactory result of an eight week search and installation involving other head units and tuners, coupled with step by step tech support.
    Pros:
    Great quality, ease of installation.
    Cons:
Short antenna, about ten feet in fact compared to a previously tried Sirius.

Written By Ben C, RI on Saturday, June 23, 2012

Easy to hook up, antenna wire was not long enough to go to the center of the car, I put the box in the passenger foot well but had plenty of wire to move it back if I wanted to so I am not going to take a star off for that. I have been using a external xm receiver for years now and this is by far better than any of them. Connected to Pioneer AVH-P2400BT.

It's 2012, time to invest in some R&D

Written By Rob B, NJ on Thursday, May 24, 2012
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think it's time Pioneer redesigns their interface. This box has been around nearly 5 years and electronics have become a bit smaller and less power hungry. Take a look at the satellite tuner that Alpine/JVC/Kenwood use. It's smaller than a deck of cards and gets everything done with a single cable (plus an antenna wire, of course).
    Pros:
    It works like it should.
    Cons:
Flipping through channels is slow. It's the size of a VCR. You need to hard wire it. Uses the old style XM antenna plug with the red clip, so I had to run a second antenna in my car.
