General Features
Overview: The Sony mylo personal communicator lets you connect to
Wi-Fi hot spots, talk, chat and surf the web without a contract. It conveniently
uses wireless LAN technology so there are no monthly bills or long-term
contracts. You can call your family or friends on Skype for free or IM them on
AIM, Google Talk, or Yahoo! Messenger using the back-lit slide-out keyboard and
enjoy unparalleled communication in the palm of your hands. You can also browse
the Web, take photos and share them on the 3.5-inch LCD touch screen. All this
on a single device small enough to fit in your pocket.
High Resolution Touch-Screen Monitor: The Sony mylo COM-2 personal
communicator features a 3.5", TFT drive, 800 x 480 pixels touch-panel LCD
monitor with 65,536 colors. The unit's touch-panel LCD monitor is used to
display photos, video, music tags and text information as well as menu
applications. Its touch-panel controls allow you to navigate through the unit's
menu system and your photos, video or music files. The LCD monitor's brightness
can be adjusted from 1 (darkest) to 5 (brightest).
Keyboard: In addition to the personal communicator's touch-panel LCD
monitor, the unit features a built-in keyboard for emailing and text-messaging.
The keyboard can also be used to control the playback of your music, photo
and video files. The COM-2's new backlit keyboard allows you to type wherever
you want to regardless of how much light is available. The keyboard's backlight
can be set to turn on automatically when the surround environment is dark or
dim. The unit's keyboard slides up and down so its only visible when you need to
use it and hidden when not in use.
Dual Media: The Sony mylo features a built-in 1GB flash memory (user
available capacity is 850MB) and also supports Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick
Pro Duo media cards up to 8GB. You can transfer information to and from the
unit's internal memory or an inserted Memory stick Pro Duo card to your PC via
USB.
USB Port: The unit features a USB type-B port and comes supplied with
a USB cable so you can connect the Sony mylo to your PC. You can use this USB
connection to back up the content data stored on the COM-2, such as music or
video files by copying the files to your PC using Windows Explorer (drag &
drop).
Built-In Speaker: The Sony mylo personal communicator features a
built-in speaker on its rear-panel for playback of your music and other audio
content.
Headset: The Sony COM-2 comes supplied with a headset which features
earbud headphones, a built-in microphone and integrated One-Touch Answer button.
The headphones allow you to listen to your music audio, video audio, internet
content or an internet phone call. The built-in microphone is used to pick up
your voice during an internet call while the integrated One-Touch Answer button
allows you to receive your internet phone calls quickly and easily.
Volume Limiter: When this feature is selected, the maximum audio
playback volume is limited to protect your hearing.
Protection Password: You can set a password to lock the unit in case
of loss or theft. It can only be unlocked and used once you have entered your
custom 4-digit password.
Power Supply: The Sony mylo COM-2 operates off of the supplied
3.7V/1200mAH Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery pack or standard household AC
current using the unit's supplied AC adapter. The supplied rechargeable battery
requires approximately 2.5 to 6.5 hours to fully charge when connected to the
supplied AC adapter. The Lithium-Ion battery can also be charged by the supplied
USB cable when connected to your PC. It takes approximately 3.5 to 6 hours to
charge when the unit is connected via USB. The supplied Lithium-Ion rechargeable
battery provides the following operating times.
- up to 6 hours of web-browsing or talk-time over the internet
- up to 7 hours of video playback
- up to 20 hours of music playback
- up to 22 hours of standby time
Power Saver: This unit will automatically turn itself off in 5, 10, or
15 minutes from the last operation, unless its is playing back music, or video ,
or while the AC adapter is connected. In addition, the unit's backlight can
automatically dim after 2 minutes of the last user operation and goes off 2
minute later. The backlight does not turn off if the AC adapter is connected.
Wi-Fi Features
Free Wi-Fi Access: The Sony mylo COM-2 receive free Wi-Fi access at
over 10,000 Wayport Hotspot locations nationwide; including over 10,000
participating Wi-Fi enabled McDonald's Restaurants, 70 IHOP restaurants, 600
hotels, and more.
Note: The COM-2 requires a IEEE 802 11b/g Wireless LAN connection
and has a communication range of approximately 160 feet.
Web-Browsing: Through its hi-res touch-screen, you can browse many
popular websites. Enhanced Web Browsing combined with Adobe Flash Lite 3 support
means you now have access to websites like YouTube and others. Mylo's upload and
download capability allows you to use popular websites like Facebook for posting
and commenting. Adobe Flash Lite support also means you can play compatible
casual Flash games.
Note: Requires compatible wireless access point(s). Some features
rely on internet services which may require a fee. As with all wireless
products, actual performances will vary depending on environment.
Instant Messaging: Using the Sony mylo communicator's built-in
keyboard you can instant message your friends and family with the most popular
messaging software from AOL, Yahoo!, Google and Skype. You are able to send and
receive e-mail through AOL Mail, Google Gmail and Yahoo! Mail. The mylo COM2
only supports web-based email from AOL Email (AIM), Google Gmail (Google Talk)
and Yahoo! Mail! (Yahoo Messenger).
Voice Calling With Skype: Skype lets you enjoy free Internet phone
calls to and from any Skype enabled device and PC, anywhere in the world. You
can also use Skype to call to any phone number for a nominal fee. The Skype
feature uses a Chat List which can display up to 99 of your on-going chats. The
Skype function also features an Events Screen which displays a history of
incoming, outgoing and missed calls, received voicemails (with subscription),
requests to exchange contact details, and transferred files.
mylo Widgets: A widget is a small application that is generally
designed to do one simple thing and to do it really well. The COM-2 comes with
several pre-installed widgets that range from basic programs like the Google
search widget and the Facebook Notifier that tracks activity on your Facebook
page to more advanced applications like the My Contacts widget that works as a
consolidated buddy list for all the IM applications on the mylo. In addition to
the preinstalled widgets, COM-2 users will be able to download new widgets from
the new COM-2 product website. You can install up to 20 mylo Widgets on this
unit. The following mylo Widgets are preinstalled.
- My Contacts Widget: The My Contacts Widget has 90 boxes to which
you can assign instant messenger IDs, such as from AIM, for easy contact and
checking their presences at a glance. If a friend or family member has ID's
on multiple communication services, you can gather them into a single box.
You can register up to 5 ID's in a box.
- RSS Widget: This Widget displays RSS feeds that you registered
using Widgets Setting Mode. Feeds that are supported by the RSS/Podcast
applications can be registered.
- Google Search Widget: This is a search bar for Google. Search
results are displayed in the layout of the mobile Web-site on the Web.
- YouTube Widget: This widget displays YouTube RSS such as
"Recently Featured.: Settings such as subscription renewal frequency or
change intervals of thumbnails can be changed in the Widget Setting mode.
- Facebook Notifier: this Notifier displays Facebook updates such
as new wall message. Setting of update intervals can be changed in the
Widget Setting mode.
Built-In Camera
1.3M Camera: With the built in 1.3 Megapixel camera you can capture JPEG photos,
edit them on the built in photo editor and because COM-2 features upload and
download capability you can post them directly to your blog or even to your
Facebook page. All this can be done on the mylo without the need for a PC.
Note: Progressive JPEG is not supported.
Recording Functions: The integrated 1.3M camera features Image Size,
Zoom, Exposure and White Balance adjustment, as well as Macro photography. The
COM-2 features the following image sizes - 1280 x 1024 (High Quality), 1280 x
1204 (Standard Quality), 640 x 480 (High Quality), 640 x 480 (Standard Quality)
or 320 x 240. The White Balance adjustment can be set to Auto, Sun Light,
Cloudy, Room Light or Lamp.
Transferring Photos: In
addition to exporting still image files from this unit to your computer,
you can also transfer still images (JPEG, PNG, BMP)
off of your computer via USB to the unit's internal memory or a Memory Stick Pro
Duo card inserted into this unit using Windows Explorer (Drag and drop). Photo
files are stored in different folder, based on the software program or feature
used to transfer the files to the internal memory or Memory Stick Duo card. The
folders includes PICTURE, DROPBOX, and DCIM (up to 5 levels of sub-folders can
be created in the main PICTURE folder).
Photo Playback: The unit's LCD monitor supports JPEG, PNG and
BMP still image formats with a maximum of 3,072 x 2304 pixels (approximately
7-megapixels). You can display your photos in the following order.
- Now Editing: photo currently being edited
- Memory Stick: all photos on an inserted Memory Stick Pro Duo card
- Drop Box: photos transferred using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger
- Camera Album: photo album taken by the mylo camera applications
- Folder: photos in a specific folder transferred from a computer
using Windows Media Player or Windows Explorer (drag and drop)
- File Name: tracks transferred from a computer using Windows Media
Player or Windows Explorer (drag and drop)
Note: Highlighting the playback option and pressing Play starts a
slideshow.
Photo Edit: The unit can edit photos up to 1,280 x 1024 pixels
(approximately 1.3 -megapixels). The COM-2 allows you to make the following
changes to your still-image files.
- 90-degree clockwise or counterclockwise shift of image
- change file size of image to 320, 640, 800, 1280 pixels
- Paint Tool Bar allows you to paint with selected effects over the still
image
Video Playback
Video Playback: The unit's video player supports both MPEG4
along with the improved video quality of MPEG4 AVC up to 320 x 240 pixels. Image
Convert 2 software or later (sold separately) is recommended to transfer MPEG4
video files from your PC to this unit. MPEG4 AVC video files require Image Converter 3 software.
- Note: The unit supports the following video format(s) - MPEG4
SP/ASP, AVC Baseline (up to QVGA 30fps, 384/768 kbps).
Video Transfer: Optional Image Converter 2 or later software (sold
separately) enables you to convert video files on your PC to the appropriate
format and then transfer them to the internal memory or inserted Memory Stick
Duo of this unit. Video can also be transferred using Windows
Explorer (drag and drop) software.
Video Folder: Video files are stored in different folders based on the
software program or feature used to transfer the files. The video folder include
- MP_ROOT, VIDEO, and DROPBOX. Up to 5 levels of sub-folders are supported
within the main VIDEO folder.
My Playlist: My Playlist is a custom playlist of videos that you can
create right on the unit without the use of a PC. You can mange the list by
adding videos in the internal memory or deleting the videos.
Playback Modes: The Sony mylo offers the following playback modes.
- Memory Stick: all videos stored on an inserted Memory Stick Duo
card
- Drop Box: video files downloaded via the Web or transferred using
Skype or Yahoo! Messenger
- Playlist: videos in My Playlist
- Folder Names: videos in specific folder transferred from a
computer suing Windows Explorer (drag and drop)
- Title: videos transferred from a computer using Image Converter 2
or later or Windows Explorer (drag and drop)
Music Playback
Music Files: The mylo plays music you've purchased from many
compatible online music stores using your PC and supports the following audio
formats - MP3 (32-320kbps+VBR), ATRAC (32-352kbps), WMA Secured/Un-Secured
(32-355kbps+VBR) and AAC (8-320kbps+VBR) codecs. The COM-2 also supports Windows
Media DRM 10 using only the unit's internal memory. You can even listen to music
while you IM or surf the Web. The unit does not allow you download music
directly from the internet; you must first download the music onto your PC and
then from your PC to the mylo COM-2.
Note: DRM (Digital Rights Management) encoded music files must be
played from the device's internal memory and not an insert Memory Stick Duo
card.
Music Folders: The mylo allows you to import music files from your PC
via USB using the following programs - Windows Explorer (Drag and drop), Windows
Media Player 10,11, And SonicStage CP (SonicStage Ver.4.3). Audio files are
stored in different folders, base on the software program or feature used to
transfer the files to the unit's internal memory or Memory Stick Duo. The music
folders include the following - OMGAUDIO, MUSIC and DROPBOX (up to 5-levels of
sub-folders are supported for the MUSIC folder).
Note: You cannot use SonicStage CP to transfer audio files to
Memory Stick Duo card inserted in this unit.
My Playlist: My Playlist is a custom playlist of tracks that you can
create right on the unit itself without a PC. You can manage the list by adding
and/or deleting tracks in the unit's internal memory. Playlists can also be
transferred from your computer.
Playback Options: You can select from one of the following playback
options to listen to your music files.
- Memory Stick: all tracks stored on an inserted Memory Stick Duo
- Drop Box: tracks transferred using Skype or Yahoo! Messenger
- All Tracks: all tracks stored in the internal memory of unit
- Now Playing: the track currently played back
- Playlists: tracks in your My Playlist or in playlists transferred
from your computer
- Artist Names: tracks of a specific artist, transferred from a
computer using SonicStage CP
- Folder Names: tracks in a specific folder transferred from a
computer using Windows Media Player or Windows Explore (drag and drop)
- Track Names: tracks transferred from a computer using Windows
Media Player or Windows Explorer (drag and drop)
- PODCAST: tracks downloaded via RSS/Podcast and saved in the
PODCAST folder of the unit's internal memory
Equalizer: The unit features a built-in equalizer which allows out to
customize your music. You can choose from Rock, Pop, Jazz, R&B, Classical,
Electronic, Bass Boost1, Bass Boost2, Custom1or Custom 2. The Custom1 and
Custom2 selection features a 7-band equalizer (63Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz,
6.3kHz, 16kHz) that can be adjusted from -3 to +3 dB.

System Environment: In addition to a Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11b/g
Internet connection, your PC will need to meet the following system requirements
before connecting the mylo COM-02 to your computer.
