Our take on the Dual XD1222

Talk about bang for your buck — Dual's XD1222 CD receiver gives you a slew of handy features for a fraction of the cost of most other stereos. Its user-friendly controls, detachable face, and solid tone make it a nice upgrade from many factory radios.

Play all your store-bought or recordable CDs, and you can tweak the sound to your liking with the bass and treble controls or by choosing from three preset EQ curves. Use the handy front-panel auxiliary input to listen to your iPod®, MP3 player, or Dock & Play satellite radio. You can also connect an amp or a powered sub to the set of preamp outputs.

Dual adds another handy feature — a front-panel USB charging port. It'll charge most USB-equipped devices, including MP3 players and cell phones, so your important devices won't go dead during a long road trip.

I can't wait to replace this thing!!

Written By Larry, MO on Saturday, August 06, 2011

Too bad there is no ZERO star rating...

This unit was in a used 97 Odyssey I recently purchased. The PO bragged about having just "upgraded" the stereo. I wonder what was there before....

The blue screen is so bright that I had to tape a piece of paper over it so I could see to drive at night! Sound quality is poor and it takes it forever to load a CD. The faceplate does not fit well and has to be adjusted frequently.

Do yourself a favor & spend more money to get a unit you will enjoy.

Dual XD 1222

Written By kolbpilot, Tidewater, Va. on Tuesday, July 05, 2011

My Dual XD 1222 came with the used vehicle I purchased last November. For a low budget radio & CD player (which I've never even tried yet) I find it to be an acceptable piece. I find the volume knob "feel" to be sorta cheap feeling but it works. And I agree with others, the blue display window is overpowering, especially at night. My solution was to cover it with tape, having memorized the radio stations & knowing how to get to 'em without the window. I guess all the other buttons on this radio are supposed to light up too but on mine they don't. Since I didn't buy this radio, I've gotten used to this as well.

Brighter Than The Sun, but works

Written By James, RI on Saturday, February 26, 2011

I replaced the standard tape deck + radio receiver that was in my car with this one. The USB + Aux setup is quite nice for iPod/iPhones. The radio works fine too.

The one thing I noticed was the antennae connection hole is not the right size for the connector that was in my car, so I hope it doesn't fall out. That might be the problem the other reviewer is having (where the radio stopped working).

The worst part about this player is that the brightness is blinding. The specs say "great for day and night," but that's not true. I now drive with one hand blocking the screen so I can see out of the windshield. Don't even try and look at it when it is night.

Summary: Works, but screen is way way way too bright.

Much less than I expected

Written By Pedro, Reno NV on Monday, February 07, 2011

I was looking for a cheap, simple, functional radio for my wifes car that included auxilury
for an IPOD. This one seemed like a good fit and when I received it I didn't notice
anything wrong. It's now been a month since I installed it and I have 3 complaints:
1. The clock doesn't stay on time. Within a day of setting the time it will be off by hours. I
have tried to reset the system but nothing works and it's frustrating because it is the only
clock in the car.
2. Radio Reception is terrible. I'm confident my tape deck Walkman would have received
better radio signal. I am going to check the antenna connection before comletely writing
this off but I doubt that is the issue.
3. The Auxiliary has a very low sound input. I know there is the control from the device
itself but I can blast my IPOD and the radio and it is alright, but then I go back to0 the
radio sound and it is much louder. This is a minor complaint and one I can live with if it
weren't for the other two issues.

Overall I wish I would have just spent the extra money on a better model and feel like I got
stuck with a radio I will want to change out until thew day I actually do it!

Specs are better than actual performance

Written By Bob, Richmond, Va on Monday, January 17, 2011

I installed this in my truck and everything went smoothly with the install and the unit worked
fine. Not a lot of power, but I was only looking to get some radio stations in my cab and it
sounded ok. Four months later, the radio stopped. The AUX works, the unit gets power, but
you can't get AM or FM. For the money, this looked like a good deal, but the poor quality
more than makes up for the low price. I guess you get what you pay for. I suggest you pay
more and get a better unit.

XD1222

Written By T.J. M, Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Bought one of these to replace factory radio in my '03 Ranger. It's a work truck, and I
didn't want to spend alot of money, so I chose this one for the low price. I've had it for a
few months now with absolutely none of the problems some previous reviewers have
had. Nice unit for the money, very happy with it. The only thing I don't like is that the
volume knob is too shallow. When you turn it, your fingers hit the surrounding buttons.
Would be nice if it had a dimple on the face of the knob to stick your fingertip in and
swivel it around.

Not bad for the price!

Written By Jan, West Palm Beach, FL on Wednesday, October 20, 2010

This is a great radio and CD player for the price. The stock CD player in my Chrysler
minivan totally stopped working and I was dying without it...bought this to replace it and it
makes the stock speakers sound better. Volume is good - louder than my stock radio.
CD player does take a second or two to load and start playing, but not horrible and I'm
ok with it. The USB charging port is a cool feature...kid loves it so he can charge his
mp3. Overall, I wouldn't say anything bad about this product. I would recommend it to
anyone who just needs a good stereo - it's obviously not top of the line, but it works just
fine and is good enough for me.

Disappointed my Daughter

Written By Phil, Groton, CT on Saturday, October 16, 2010

Bought this radio for my daughter because it sounded like a good starter unit and had an MP3 and Aux connections. Bad choice. The CD skips over the slightest bumps, even using Crutchfield's installation kit. The radio section repeatedly stops working and she has to take off the face plate and use the reset switch. I thought maybe it was the car's wiring so I reinstalled the OEM radio and it worked great. My advice: spend a few more bucks on something else and stay away from Dual!

Do Not Buy this Product

Written By Cos, Tustin, CA on Sunday, September 05, 2010

This radio is a complete waste of money. Crutchfield's harness pack was
outstanding and made installation easy, fast and simple. After I installed this
radio, I noticed that the AM stations gradually got softer and softer. After
about a week, the radio would not pick up any AM stations at all. The same
happened to the FM stations soon thereafter.

CD player is horrible. It takes 32 seconds to load (timed from when you switch
to CD from any other option) and the player will skip when you make a lane
change. It is so bad that the CD function is practically useless unless you are
driving on a glass-smooth road surface.

I bought this in February and over the past 7 months, I have been using my cell
phone's 'iheart radio' application hooked to the aux port to listen to the
radio. Do not be fooled by the cheap price, this radio is not worth the money
and I will never purchase a Dual product again.

Now that I read the reviews (none available when I made my purchase) I feel
better knowing that I am not a lone voice in the forest. I wish only that I had
waited for reviews before I purchased.
